SMA tarmac

You may remember I had a nasty off last July.Bust ribs, punctured lung and generally battered all over.

It was a nice warm sunny day no visible crap on the road,Stan,F.B.and I were enjoying a nice little bimble from Newtown to Llandovery on the A483

A right hander which we know very well approaches I get every thing set up nicely Stan and Bert are just behind so have a ring side seat of what happens next

I tip the bike in,then mid corner the tyres just let go the bike and me slide then hit the apex of the corners kerb stone I black out at this point. Stan says we got flipped in the air and land 20 yds in a ditch.

The road surface is SMA for those of you who ain't heard of it it's the smooth black shit that's being used all over Wales :dunno: about the rest of the country.

My neighbour who is a keen biker works as a highway road inspector he tells me the way they test the surface is called a scrim test this involves pushing a wheel into the surface then turning it at an angle

They've been having problems with surfaces failing this test and they are now finding it's staying slippery for up to 3yrs
The local authorities put up a sign saying slippery road surface
so that's ok then init

Yesterday whilst out for a ride we stopped at road works where they had put this shit it's been down a week or so
Twisting the sole of my boot on it felt waxy and slippery

I know SMA has been well publicised in the press but thought I'd warn you guys

If it's black and smooth take care out there

strange

The slippery signs are up all over Wales,, Find it hard to believe the tyres just let go unless (a) there was scum/shit/deisel on the road or (b) you were riding like a god & had the bikes fairing scraping around the bend. BTW can't remember but what tyres were you on & how long had you been riding since you last stopped. (tyres warm enough)
But thanks for the warning.

If the actual surface is the culprit then sue the council, this Shell grip stuff is crap to,, good for four wheels but a little loose on two.

Believe it they did

ask Stan or Bert, the road was clean, the tyres and road warm it was a cracking day 20degrees or more,we had done 90 ish miles of quick riding without stopping
yes we were riding quick but not fairing scrapping quick anyway that depends on how the bike's set up and riding style

I don't want to go down the tyre route and blame them but for the record they were 45/46's

There have been 6 other accidents at this location over the last year I don't know what vehicles they were or the circumstances

You're much safer there! They will only use SMA where the speed is restricted to 30mph. I agree about the shell grip. It sure makes me slow down for the corner especially when it's on a steep downhill.

stan the man

you are not capable
agree with blu...this SMA surface is definately very waxy and slippery, and they've resurfaced most of the A483 with the stuff  s'pose we'd better look for a replacement to play on pete

Once again we don't count!

Local authorities just don't give a damn about bikes. That's the long and short of it. Because we ride bikes we're classed as sociopathic, child murdering filth! Our safety counts for jack-shit and if there's a cheap alternative to laying decent road surfaces then they choose that. SMA and shell grip are both complete shite andshould never have even been allowed in production. They even use broken glass, ground down, in some areas and then wonder why bikes slide on the smooth glossy surface??!!??!!

It seems to me that the sooner we get off our bikes and back into our cages, clogging up the roads and creating even more pollution, the better for the government and their Nazi enforcers. Then we can get on with being broing, humdrum little nobodies that fit into the niche of shitsville life that is expected. We live in a country run by fucking wankers!

Rant over, normal service has been resumed (for now!)

I see this thread has been made a sticky, given the nature of the thread should be an unsticky.

Will this government stop at nothing?

Using powdered baby milk as an additive to tarmac?

How do you know if it's SMA tarmac ?

If you cut out a 1" square section with a pen knife look underneath & it will be stamped SMA but don't look for a BSA stamp as it does not meet safety standards.

According to my source of info if it's black smooth and new it's SMA

Bill's right the Irish started to use the stuff but due to the number of accidents it was only used on max 30mph sections

How the fukc they can continue to use this shit is beyond me

cause it is cheap and as more people get to know about , more people will slow down thus then more people will stop having crashes, thus in fact it is a life saver just like the speed cameras.

what does it matter if 20 or 30 peeps are mained killed etc etc the stats will say thousands saved by shiny waxy road surface, you think it is bad now blu, ride on the stuff when it is wet, feck me i shat!!
