Rear Brake Calliper

This is gonna sound stupid, but here goes.........

I had problems getting the bike through its MOT due to the front brakes binding slightly, so I had the front callipers refurbed with new seals. This hasn't really improved the binding and the front wheel still wont make a full turn when spun by hand. But it did pass the MOT with no advisories.

I have been replacing the wheels with a pair of freshly powder coated ones. With the wheels off I decided to give the swing arm a good glean. I have displaced the calliper bracket and noticed that the calliper is not sliding at all. I tried to take it off to glean and grease the sliders, but it just wont budge.

Is there something that I'm missing or should it just slide off the bracket?

Should slide easily just like the fronts - sounds like you have found your problem

When you get it off, clean it up and grease it. I use marine grease normally used for boat propellers. Stays there and works a treat

If you use ordinary grease that usually sticks the bloody things really well :eek:
You need to use red rubber grease

Thanks folks. Still struggling to get the calliper off the bracket. I don't want to disconnect the hoses and bleed the brakes.

I've tried a little leverage, some gentle percussive maintenance at the bracket part of the slider. But still nothing.

There is what looks like a bolt head on the calliper, just where the slider is. Could this have something to do with it?

Any other suggestions? I'm getting a bit grumpy with it.

Oh.. Forgot to say I'll try to get the red grease John, but can't source it locally.

I've had to disconnect the brake hoses to get some access to split them. Have ordered a new seal kit and some red rubber grease.
Now to work on getting the calliper off the bracket. Some heat may be required.

This all sounds a bit odd - the caliper should literally fall off the bike when the rear wheel is removed.

I would advise giving it a good whack with a rubber mallet or similar - there are not any mechanical fixings to worry about.

When you get it off the caliper splits in half really easily for cleaning the pistons........just make sure they don't pop out while you are doing itsh1tehppns

Red rubber grease for the seals is available in tiny sachets or 500ml tins - the latter will keep the whole of the Bird population of Scotland supplied for at least the next 256 years. Or you could just order this which will keep you going for years.....

Or am i misreading the problem...........as you seem to have the calpier off the bike?

Which bit is stuck??

Thanks Andy. That's the tin of red rubber grease that I ordered for when I get the calliper off the bracket.

Yeah, Dean. It's the slider that's seized and that's a mistake that I won't be making again. Grease at the ready.........

But.......................if the fronts are still binding................... i had this a few times with new EBC pads that seemed to be a bit thicker than they should have been. First time it happened it drove me nuts. Solved by removing the anti squal shims off the back of the pads. That's out of probably 20 or so sets fitted over the years to my Birds so there are probably quite a few oversize pairs out there.

Good news. That's the rear calliper now free to slide on the bracket. The brakes bled and everything seems to be as it should be.
The bike even seems easier to push too. Happy me

I couldn't budge it at all, so I handed it to a mechanic friend. He says he used a bit of heat with some gentle percussive maintenance. Fortunately no damage to the calliper, paint or bracket. Serviced the calliper with new seals and red rubber grease.
Thankfully, all seems fine now and I'll keep on top of the maintenance in future.
