Rattle..don't think it's cct.

Afternoon all.
I have an annoying engine rattle that I could do with some help identifying.
It appears just below 3k and carries on past 4.5k. I've had the dreaded cct noise before and put a new one in 7k ago. I also had a new spare that I've tried fitting recently but to no avail. Sounds a bit like a heat shield type thing, but not cct-esque.
Does anyone have any suggestions please?

No, I don't, but good thought. Recently replaced the radiator too, but this noise has been with me before that...

Have you tried forcing the CCT tighter to prove it is not the CCT ?

Take out the end screw - put screwdriver in to end of CCT and with engine running - turn it slightly.

One way the rattle will get worse
One way the rattle will get less

If nothing changes at least you have ruled out the CCT

Big fairing on the right - check that the bracket that attaches it to the engine block hasn't corroded through - happened on my first bird.

Also check front mudguard is properly secured.

Both caused me some angst around weird noises, nuggets to track down.

Hmm, bike didn't rattle till warm but I undid the cct bolt and noticed the screw inside was oscillating at idle. Revved it up and it 'rattled' even more. Tried screwing it in and got a hammering sensation through the screwdriver, screwing it out slightly stopped the hammering and the screw then wound itself back in and started oscillating again when released. Is this new cct faulty or is this normal behaviour?

Fairing bracket is intact, mudguard is secure too....

*edit* noise IS coming from cct... Another one bites the dust. Could something else be causing the ccts to be eaten so quickly? Valve lash? Bike's done 56kmiles and its ever been checked.

Apparently the CCTs with two green dots on them are an improved version, sourced from JAWS.

At the en of the day it's only a plunger that presses onto a chain so I can't imagine it is anything other than a knackered cct.

I always wondered if a ccc with three green dots on it would be even better than that with two green dots. h1d1ng2

My original replacement cct was a Jaws double green dot, latest was a double green dot from Partzilla. Jaws lasted 8k, latest maybe 4K? These things need changing more regularly than the oil at this rate!

I think you are just unlucky - my first Bird was on about 105k miles and on it's second CCT when I sold it, my second was bought with about 25k miles on it and it was ready to be changed, sold it with c 60k miles on it without further attention. If there was anything for instance wrong with the oil you are using I think something else would give up before the CCT.

Don't take this the wrong way - are you absolutely certain you are installing them correctly? For once Haynes is spot on from memory.

It seems there's a perception that Jaw's double dot's are different to other double dot's.

I sure it's been clarified that this is not the case.

Clueless in most things
I always thought and am happy to be corrected.

That after the initial batch, Honda did infact improve the standard cct and these can be bought from Honda dealers.

It's these later uprated ones that Jaws sells?

Again happy to be corrected? John if you get a mo, is it possible to clarify this?

slight edit

This is from Jaws site

REPLACEMENT UPGRADED CCT
Yes, we carry the new updated Cam Chain Tensioner for the Blackbird. The CCT has been one of the very few items to cause problems on the Blackbird. Whilst it is easy to change ( about 20 minutes at most ), it is never the less both a nuisance and an expense. Honda seem to have addressed the matter by bringing out a modified CCT unit that has a different spring and a different pressure foot.

Andybird - I believe I am installing them correctly by installing them with the depth pin still in, torqueing the two mounting bolts then removing the depth pin. I've also tried winding the screw all the way out (clockwise) and releasing it just in case the cct had stuck, but no difference.
The latest cct was from Partzilla 06140-MAT-325, they list the previous revisions of them but don't stock them any more, only the latest ones.

From memory that sounds right but perhaps someone can confirm??

Looks like you have just been unlucky. What is even more unlucky is I has a spare barely used CCT but i think it probably went in the bag of spares that i chucked in when i sold my last Bird,,,,,,,,,,,

I used to work with someone called Gordon Jago, but that is probably not connected to your CCT.

Looks like I'll just need to buy another and see if that cures the issue...

It definitely sounds like cct rather than downpipes, though I know the sound you refer to. Do header gaskets degrade over time?

There are a couple of us Jagos around, but I'm an Ian, not a Gordon, so don't think it's cct related :-0)

Yes.. Header gaskets can fail over time.. Had several incidents of them leaking on Birds, and my son has just suffered exactly the same on his 1150GS !

Well, finally got a new CCT and installed it and......noise has gone! So that's CCT no.3 in 12.5kmiles. At least it's got rid of the noise, but the third double green dot CCT, is that indicative of another problem?? Cam chain need replacing?
