"Positive" discrimination in action.

I am not saying that the case in question is right or wrong, but in my personal opinion many people do not ‘get’ why positive positive discrimination is the right thing to do in some circumstances. If there has clearly been discrimination in the past positive discrimination is a useful tool p, when used correctly, for balancing the books. The industry I worked in was almost exclusively ‘white’ when i joined and action was needed to correct that. By the time I left it was incredibly multicultural, particularly in London.

Discrimination of any kind is wrong & part of the reason much of the Country is work shy is because in many careers the only way you’ll progress is if you fit the woke profile which translates as if you are white heterosexual male forget it, we had female Lesbian senior Officers & Custodial Managers on the wings, they would alter the detail sending experienced Male colleagues to other duties just so they could have their lovers on the wing then they would sit in the office nattering whilst everyone else did their job.

I don't see multiculturalism being promoted in non-white countries. I also don't see positive discrimination being used to recruit in the manual side of the building trade - brickies, plasterers, etc, but just for things like architects and surveying - all the higher paid stuff. I've never seen a binwoman, street-cleaning lady or, for that matter women in any other minimum wage dirty jobs. On the flip-side of the coin what about the lack of males in traditional female roles such as the care sector and administration/office work? When I start seeing recruitment drives that cover these discrepancies then I may be convinced that true equality is here.

Jill and Kate by any chance? That was happening when I left in 2013.

I couldn't agree less.

Positive discrimination is just discrimination. You can spin it anyway you like but it is just discrimination.
Using the excuse that you're righting the wrongs of the past by using it to meet minority group quotas to correct past discrimination is false economy. This is exceedingly important for recruitment in jobs like the Armed Forces, the police, fire brigade, health services or anywhere else where the service provided is mission critical or where poor service could lead to loss of life.

When I was in, during the 80's, a career in the Forces was not popular in ethnic minority groups. Many airmen that I knew who were brown skinned did not find joining the Forces to be popular with family. I served alongside one guy who's family (Jamaican) had all but disowned him. I also served with a couple of Muslim airmen who had been ostracized by family and friends for the same reason.

If that attitude still persists in those communities then no amount of "Positive" recruitment will help.... unless you think press ganging should make a comeback.

There's a young lad round the corner from me who had received his start date to join the RAF a couple of months ago. His mother told me that he's recently received a letter that this has had to be deferred for 6 months due to the unavailability of training courses and could possibly be deferred again. He's gutted and is now considering the police instead.

He's white and obviously male.

Recruiting people at that level your skin colour should not even be considered, your not going to get the placement on merit either unless you're a Royal.
Ability and skill along with the appropriate
training. I couldn't give a fook if your skin colour is polka dot.
Keep the Ruskies, Chinks and any other mad mullah off our shores and you will
have my full backing.

The Americans tried positive discrimination, which they called 'Affirmative Action', back in the late 80s/early 90s and they soon learned that it doesn't work.

Roles should be given on merit, nothing else. You wouldn't employ a baker if you needed an electrician so what makes recruiting on the basis of race, creed, colour, religion, sexual preference or gender acceptable? It's utter bollocks and anyone saying otherwise is deluded.

It seems I am in a minority so therefore I am deluded.

I must try harder.
Anything that involves the word “Discrimination” is abuse, plain & simple regardless of reasons, no such thing as positive discrimination

From the Government's website.....

Types of discrimination ('protected characteristics')
It is against the law to discriminate against anyone because of:
  • age
  • gender reassignment
  • being married or in a civil partnership
  • being pregnant or on maternity leave
  • disability
  • race including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation
These are called ‘protected characteristics’.
You’re protected from discrimination:

  • at work
  • in education
  • as a consumer
  • when using public services
  • when buying or renting property
  • as a member or guest of a private club or association
You’re legally protected from discrimination by the Equality Act 2010.

And further....

How you can be discriminated against

Discrimination can come in one of the following forms:

  • direct discrimination - treating someone with a protected characteristic less favourably than others
  • indirect discrimination - putting rules or arrangements in place that apply to everyone, but that put someone with a protected characteristic at an unfair disadvantage

I've been discriminated from early age on gender, when I said at a young girl I wanted to go into engineering I was told girls don't do that.

I've also been in recent years discriminated on age. No discrimination is right what is positive for one person is negative to someone else
