Petrol still flowing after new diaphragm

Took the petrol tap on my carb bird to bits for cleaning (long story). Diaphragm intact but the part which seals on the tap body to stop fuel flow had a worn spot. Built tap and blew down input. pretty easy flow of puff past diaphragm 'valve' when tap open. New diaphragm and valve bit with new spring. No different. The seating on the carb body for the valve piece of rubber is smooth and flat. I can stop flow with finger pressure but it has to be pretty tight - more than the vacuum could overcome I think. When on the bike fuel will dribble out of the pipes to carbs even when no vacuum if the tap is turned on. Yes - it is assembled correctly. Any suggestions on a fix?

Hmmm..
If it is all clean then it can really only be a few things.
Either the diaphragm is not seats properly or the assembly body has become warped..
Gawd knows why or how but I have seen it a few times over the years..

Thanks Jaws. This was worrying me as we know the potential disasters than could occur if the petrol flows into the wrong places. Anyway, the bike is work in progress and the tank had to come off again to route some wiring. So, petrol in tank. Petrol tap on - no fuel flow. The valve had fixed itself!!! I can only think that the valve part wasn't seating properly and going through a few cycles as the bike was ridden has settled it into position and now all is well. @tu*
