If for some strange reason you have a non genuine copy of Windows XP, Microsofts latest updates tells you that you have a "Non Genuine Windows" I can't imagine anyone on this site having one though

Anyway here is a way around it.

---------------------------------------------------------

Another alternative suggest that three files are installed Windows XP System Folder:

\WINDOWS\system32\WgaLogon.dll
\WINDOWS\system32\WgaTray.exe
\WINDOWS\system32\LegitCheckControl.dll

The wgatray.exe process makes the check for genuine windows software. You can disable WGA by removing the execute bit on WgaLogon.dll. That way, winlogon can't call it as a notification package at boot, and since WgaLogon is responsible for running and maintaining WgaTray.exe, no more tray popups either.

To change the execute bit of WgaLogon.dll, first turn off Simple File Sharing (found in, windows explorer, tools/folder options/view). Now right click the file in Windows Explorer and open the Security Tab. Hit the Advanced button, uncheck the Inherit box at the bottom, hit the Copy button, then hit OK. Go through each listed user/group and remove the "Read & Execute" permission for that file, leaving the "Read" permission as-is.

Hit OK to apply the permission changes and close the file properties dialog. Restart the machine. You can now turn "Use simple file sharing" back on, if you want.

First open Windows Explorer, then to turn off ?simple file sharing? click the tools menu at the top of the page, then click ?Properties? a box opens up, at the top of it click the ?view? tab. Scroll down until you find a box that says ?simple file sharing? and click on the box to un-tick it. Now ?simple file sharing? is off.

Now; still in explorer in the ?C? drive find the windows folder click it and then look for the ?system32? folder now open that and scroll down until you find ?wgalogon.dll? it?s a long way down.

Now the difficult bit.

Now right click ?wgalogon.dll? and click ?properties? and open the Security Tab. Hit the Advanced button, uncheck the Inherit box at the bottom, hit the Copy button, then hit OK. Go through each listed user/group and remove the "Read & Execute" permission for that file, leaving the "Read" permission as-is.

There is another way. Just use the windows restore [programs-accessories-system tools-system restore] just restore your 'puter' to a date before the 'windows genuine advantage' update was installed job done, next time you get the little yellow shield in the bottom r/h corner come up just use custom install (double click on the shield) and choose do not install update and then choose dont remind me of the upate (or something like that). No more annoying popups demanding 95 quid off ya (course you could go and buy a genuine version)-------------maybe not
