Interesting Tony.
In the latest IAM mag there is an article about off-siding.
They have a acronym - SLAP
Safe -Is it safe to do so, Concider the view available and any hazards.
Legal - Is it legal to do so. Observe the road markings.
Achieve - Does it actually achieve something. Or are you just showboating.
Perception - What is the perception of other road users of your actions.

If that is what they are saying (and I have no reason to doubt you) they need to be a bit careful because they could be held partly liable in a crash case if someone says that they did it because it was approved by the IAM.

It opens up a whole can of worms which is why even the Police stopped teaching it at advanced level.

I used to do it regularly on the bike but only on roads that I knew. Too many imponderables on strange roads for me.

Still do it in the car, again only on roads that I know.
