Hi I know I don't post much but do read and chuckle often. I've an 04 model that just died on me in the outside lane....not much fun trying to get to the hard shoulder with no power. No Fi light just died started , went for about a mile or so and died again left it for a few minutes and it started again but only got a few hundred yards . I was wondering if any of you have had similar problem and maybe could point me in the right direction. ....Help please:dunno:

Sounds like the charging system has failed and flattened the battery.

The symptoms you describe sounds like the regulator/rectifier failing to me as I suffered exactly the same a few years back whilst coming down the M20 in lane 3 just prior to coming off at junction 11. A total loss of engine power, loss of lights and it was only my crushing speed and momentum that got me out of trouble. Okay, mine is a 99 carb'd bike rather that a FI model but I would be inclined to be looking at this. Hopefully your battery will be okay but you may find a need to replace that at the same time. P

Let us know how you get on. Upgraded reg/rec's are available from a well known supplier linked to this site. @tu* and other outlets, of course.

Somehow doubt it is a charging issue given there was life enough in the battery to spin it over and restart

If it went dead as a dodo I would be looking at:

The wires going to the bottom of the ignition switch
If it has an alarm fitted every single connection
The plug in to the ECU
Every other plug you can find
Double check the loom fix ( which I presume is done )

If it stuttered a bit before dying it may be something as simple as a battery breaking down.. I have had a few over the years that have broken apart inside but would sometimes make contact..
But then you should still get a BIT of juice so that is unlikely

Thanks everyone for your response. It's in the shop now they seem to think it's the fuel pump? As they say it's noisy, it was serviced by them about six weeks ago and to be honest I have trusted them with my other bikes in the past ...I asked them as I haven't the ability to do the hard wired fix but they were reluctant but striped it back cleaned the terminals and assured me there wasn't any corrosion it had only done 4000 miles when I got it back in November and hardly used in the past five years. I'd be grateful for you thoughts. I also don't think it's battery as when broke down, rac checked battery output, when in the shop yesterday they run it up to temperature an never cut out:bang:

Mine cut out 5 times coming home from work last week. Since all were left hand turns it was a bit of a clue 8rfl@

I'm amazed show small the wires are considering their lock to lock life.

All sorted after a session in the garage with the soldering iron. @tu*

Do not be fooled by the loom fix - regardless of what the wires look like it is a time bomb waiting to go off. Preventative maintenance at it's best. It is not a hard job, take a look at the 'loom fix' thread at the top of Help.

Got it back from the shop today...They couldn't find anything wrong ,no faults from diagnostics. Did say as low on fuel that pump may have overheated? ....filled it road home 15 mins then road it round th block for another 15...no issues , think I'm gonna buy a soldering iron and have a practice soldering. When confident will have a go at loom fix. Thanks everyone for you input@tu*@tu*

Good lad.

Don't buy a little soldering iron. One with a bit at least half an inch across is needed. Solder indoors if you have a garage and on a windless day if outside. The key to soldering is to tin each wire separately before joining. Tinning means giving each wire a "soaking" in really hot solder. When joining pre-tinned wires together use extra solder and ensure it really flows into the joint. Use flux cored solder but a bit of extra flux from a plumbers merchant really helps. Use shrink wrap around each joint to finish it off. @tu*

PS Having someone to hold the soldering iron whilst you use wiring pliers to hold the wire and apply the solder makes it a lot easier.

It's easy peasy, MB.

Usual fault is dry joints caused by too little flux or not enough heat. :-0)

Me too, as a kid, but nobody would let me watch them shagging. I guess some things you just have to fly blind on. 8rfl@
