Intermittent lights & speedo

I've not enough privileges to answer Mitch's enquiry, on the "Tech help" but I had the same problem. There'll be a break in the circuit on the film inside the instrument cluster. Do as I did, & take it to your local bike shop, tell them what's wrong & they'll fix it for a few squid. Regards, Len W.

vfr800's were well known for the pcb in the clocks breaking down or failing to conduct properly/being intermittent after a few years of getting wet, not heard the same thing about any bird though !

Hi Mitch, I took my clocks off the bike, before taking ' em to get fixed. Could save yourself a few pennies, if you do the same. Regards, Len

Does this problem affect the fuel gauge too. Since I had a new radiator fitted my speedo is on the blink, works fine sometimes and the fuel gauge is inaccurate; says less than half full or empty and flashing - even with a full tank. When the ignition i switched on all the gauges / lights work and speedo counts down appropriately. I've got a last of the line 'Bird. Registered 2008.

Sounds like someone hasn't put it back together properly.

It sounds like an earth fault.... Possibly the dread loom fix issue.. if not, could be the other earth point at the bake of the tank.. or perhaps the plugs not seated properly behind the clocks

Regarding the fuel gauge :- Sounds like a fault with the fuel sender unit. Doubt it's the PCB, with that year of bike. As for the speedo :- re- check it's fitted correctly. You could try, removing your speedo cable, pop the driven end in a drill to check it turns properly. If alls well, then re- fit it to the drive unit on the wheel, spin the wheel, to check the drive unit's working properly. I've also had this type of problem, discovered I'd not fitted the cable properly at the back of the speedo. It can be a bugger to fit it correctly. Also, if you battery's a bit flat, this will effect your speedo reading ! Regards, Len.

If it worked before the rad was changed and it didn't work after.... there is more than one issue on the dash (almost certainly rules out tank sender problem)......still sounds like someone hasn't put it back together properly to me.....

Only question in my mind is that it wouldn't have been necessary to mess with the instrument binnacle to change the radiator.......unless someone has come up with a bizarre way of changing the rad by going in from the top....
