FIAT YAMAHA HEAD TO INDY FOR SECOND STATESIDE ROUND

This week sees the MotoGP paddock land on US soil for the second time this season for the Indianapolis Grand Prix, at the world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Fiat Yamaha Team have already enjoyed success in the States once this season and both Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi will be hoping for a top result at the world's largest spectator sporting facility.
Lorenzo is flying high after enjoying an incredible seven wins from ten races so far this season. The 23-year-old has a championship lead of 77 points over Dani Pedrosa and the Mallorcan knows he simply has to continue in the same consistent way to ensure a first premier-class championship later this year. After another comfortable win last time out in Brno and a useful one-day test afterwards he is feeling confident of another good result in Indiana. He has a good record with the track having taken a commanding win there last year and his first ever wet podium in 2008, the first year that MotoGP visited Indianapolis.

Rossi's injury-hit season suffered a low point in Brno when he could only finish fifth after being hopeful of something much better, but he and his team worked hard to understand what had gone wrong during the test and they are satisfied that they won't see a repeat this week. The reigning World Champion always enjoys racing in America and he was thrilled to take a brilliant podium in Laguna Seca last month, at just his second race back after breaking his leg. Rossi took a memorable win at the Inaugural Indianapolis Grand Prix in 2008, when the race was battered by Hurricane Ike, but last year he slid out when sparring with his team-mate, something he will be looking to make up for this time around.

With 257,000 permanent seats the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the largest spectator sporting facility in the world and fills to capacity for its flagship events, the Indy 500 and Allstate 400 car races. Originally constructed in 1909 with a 2.5-mile oval, an exciting 16-turn motorcycle road circuit, which includes part of the historic oval, was purpose-built for MotoGP.
Jorge Lorenzo "JUST GOOD MEMORIES IN AMERICA"
"The first back-to-back races in the second half of the season are coming, and this first one after a few days of holiday in the US for me. This weekend will be the second race in this country in 2010 and I am looking forward to it because I would like to repeat the same result as I got in Laguna! I just have good memories from America, last month in Laguna and last year in Indy. Last year was amazing, but this time I don't need to take too many risks. We can avoid it! Indy is a track that I like a lot and it has amazing history. The team and I are planning to continue our great season there this weekend."

Valentino Rossi "A SPECIAL PLACE"
"Indianapolis is a special place, an amazing track and as always it's fun to race in America. I have great memories from 2009 when I won in the hurricane, even if it's not something I want to repeat! This year we arrive in a different situation to last year, fifth in the championship and not at 100% in physical condition, but I am feeling stronger all the time. Brno was disappointing but the test helped us to understand what went wrong and so we are hopeful that we can be back on good form in Indy."

Wilco Zeleenberg "FINISHING RACES IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING"
"I've never been to Indianapolis so I'm excited! As for Jorge, he loves Indy and he knows that it's important to get three or four more good finishes and then see where we are. He has a big lead and he doesn't need to stick his neck out or take too many risks, he knows that finishing races and taking points is the most important thing."

Davide Brivio "ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO GO RACING THERE"

"We go to Indy, where we had a bad race last year, coming from not such a good race in Brno so we really need a good result this weekend! The test after Brno was useful however and we hope to be in good shape this weekend. It's always a pleasure to go racing in such an amazing place and we just need to keep working to put Valentino in the best possible position to start fighting for victories again as soon as possible."

Rizla Suzuki ready for Indy challenge

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP has headed back across the Atlantic for the second American Grand Prix of the season this time at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Following a positive post-race test at Brno, both Loris Capirossi and ?lvaro Bautista are eager to get back on-track and carry on with the improvements they found at the Czech Republic circuit.

This will be the third time that MotoGP has visited Indianapolis and Capirossi will certainly looking to improve on his results there, that has seen him score a personal best of seventh place at the 4,216m track in 2009. Bautista has a podium position to show from his only race at the circuit. He finished third last year after the 250cc class race was cancelled in 2008 due to a hurricane hitting the Indianapolis area.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway or ?The Brickyard?, as it is also known, was built in 1909 and has become one of the most famous sporting venues in the world since its inception. The vast race-track has a permanent seating capacity of over 250,000, with the facility to raise that to over 400,000 for the ?Indy 500? and the ?Brickyard 400?, both of which are major sporting events on the American calendar and feature IndyCar and NASCAR respectively. On the grounds of the circuit are also the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum and the Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort, making this impressive venue even more amazing.

Rizla Suzuki takes to the track on Friday 27th August for the first of two free practice sessions, the second scheduled for the following morning. Saturday afternoon sees an hour of qualifying for all riders to establish their grid positions in readiness for Sunday?s 28-lap race that gets underway at 15.00hrs local time (19.00hrs GMT).

Loris Capirossi:

?The Brno test was a lot better than the race, but the bike did feel the best it has done all year during the short time I was on-track in the race and we made some improvements on the Monday so these should be good for us when we get to Indy. I finished seventh last year and that was a big improvement on 2008 so I am determined to make another step forward this year. It is very important that we keep focussed and keep trying as hard as we can to get the results to show what we are capable of.?

?lvaro Bautista:

?I?m still a bit stiff from my crash at Brno, but I have rested and let the injury heal properly so I will be ready for Indianapolis. I really need to finish a whole weekend and get a full practice, qualifying and race in my account. It seems a long time since I crossed the finish line and I am positive about visiting America and making that happen. We made some steps at the Brno test, but we still need to work on those at Indianapolis - and the races that follow - to find out what the true potential of the bike is. That is something we are determined to do and to keep on learning as much as possible about all things to do with the GSV-R and how it behaves on different tracks and in varying conditions and also about myself and how I can ride it to get the best from it.?

INTERWETTEN HONDA MotoGP TEAM: Hiro's comeback in Indianapolis

A never-ending absence of Hiroshi Aoyama, who crashed at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone back in June and fractured his 12th vertebra in the Warm up, seems to be officially over, as Aoyama will come back to action for the U.S. Grand Prix in Indianapolis after recovering from his injury during the last two months.

Today Aoyama got the final okay from his doctor in Barcelona to ride his Honda RC212V again and to come back to action in Indianapolis. Already at the post race test in Brno/Czech Republic a week ago the 28-year-old Japanese proved that he is ready to come back to the racing action, but he and his team were careful about the decision. Aoyama did not fracture a leg, it is his back that is damaged and this injury needs more of recovery time.

Nine weeks, more than two months after the crash, Aoyama can't wait to get back on his bike and race against the other top riders of the premier class, the highest class of motorcycle racing. Indianapolis, the eleventh Grand Prix of this season so far is the perfect opportunity to show that he still knows how to race a bike and the Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team and his fans are looking forward to welcome him back.
Hiroshi Aoyama:

"I am so happy that I am finally coming back. Today I had another X-Ray and the doctor confirmed me that my broken vertebra looks good and did not change its shape, which is essential in this state of the injury. I got the okay to ride in Indianapolis and I can't wait to get back on my bike. Of course I want to be fast, but first I have to gain my confidence and feeling with the bike back, then I can concentrate on being fast. It will not be easy after such a long time away to ride with the group again, but step by step I will get there I get my strength back from the start of the season. I missed six races, that is a lot and I have to see how I can cope with the situation after such a long time and how I can cope with the pain level. I am so happy to finally come back."

Daniel M. Epp, Team Manager:

"After the successful test in Brno and the further training Hiro was concentrating on during the last couple of weeks, he got the final okay from his doctor in Barcelona to come back to active racing. The back is healing very well and this supports the decision of Hiro to come back now to Indy. We will give him time to get his strength from the beginning of the season back during the next two or three races and then we will see where he can be. We all look forward to welcome him back in our team."

Honda men head back to the brickyard
The MotoGP World Championship returns to the U.S. for the second time in five weeks for the third annual Indianapolis Grand Prix in the American heartland.

The 11th round of the MotoGP World Championship comes two weeks after the Czech Grand Prix, a race in which Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) started from his third pole position of the year and raced to a second place finish.

Pedrosa has been the dominant rider of the six strong Honda contingent, with two wins and six podiums, a record which puts him second in the title chase, albeit at a gap of 77 points as the season approaches the two-thirds mark. But if there?s a track where Pedrosa can begin the process of closing the gap, it?s Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

A simple scan of the Spaniard?s results at the Brickyard don?t tell the entire story. In 2008 he finished second in the race which was run in, and finally stopped by, the torrential rains and howling winds of Hurricane Ike. Last year the 24-year-old from Sabadell was the fastest rider from the minute he rolled out onto the track. He was fastest in the opening practice, fastest by a second in the second practice, and rode a record lap in qualifying that was best by over half a second. Starting from pole position, Pedrosa was in the lead when his front end slid away on the fourth lap. Undeterred, Pedrosa lifted up his Honda RC212V and rejoined the fight. Racing with a damaged handlebar and foot peg, Pedrosa gradually picked up his pace and raced from dead last, 17th place, to finish 10th, making his last pass for position on the final lap. He finished with the second fastest lap time.

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) wants to put the disappointment of the Czech Grand Prix behind him as soon as possible. Dovizioso had a strong race pace and was a fighting fourth early in the race when he slid off. Now, less than two weeks and an ocean away, Dovizioso has a chance for redemption on a track where he made progress over the first two years.

The Italian improved from the first to the second year of the Indy GP. Fifth the first year, Dovizioso finished half a second off the podium in 2009, having closed the gap on third place right up until the final lap. Dovi arrives in Indianapolis within four points of third place in the championship.

No one was looking forward to the weekend off after Brno more than Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda). The Frenchman finished a creditable tenth after making a miraculous recovery from a broken left leg suffered four weeks earlier in Germany. Still, he wasn?t at full strength and won?t be for some time, but just making it through the race was an exercise in courage.

The Indianapolis road course is predominantly left-biased, which will tax de Puniet?s still mending left leg. Of the track?s 16 corners, ten are left-handed, to go with six rights. Unlike Brno, which features near constant elevation changes, the Indy track is completely flat, with a number of 90 degree corners and relatively few that demand a quick side-to-side transition.

San Carlo Honda Gresini team-mates Marco Melandri and Marco Simoncelli will both be racing in Honda colors for the first time at IMS. Melandri raced a different brand each of the past two years, which means the 2010 race will be his third in a row on a different motorcycle. Melandri is fortunate to be aboard the satellite Honda RC212V this year. This season the team has enjoyed the benefit of a revised chassis, swingarm, and, most recently, electronics.

The Brickyard has been good to Simoncelli the past two years. In 2008, the tall, lanky Italian was on the pole in the 250cc race. But the same hurricane that shortened the MotoGP race to 20 laps from the scheduled 28 made the track unfit for racing, and the 250 final was canceled. The following year Simoncelli qualified second, jetted into the lead on the fourth of 26 laps and sped to victory.

The rider who finished second to Simoncelli last year was Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP). Aoyama hounded Simoncelli much of the race before the Italian stretched his lead to over a second three laps from the end. The 2010 Indianapolis Grand Prix will not only be Aoyama?s first on a MotoGP bike at the famed Speedway, but it will also mark his return to racing.

The Japanese rider has been mostly out of action since breaking the T12 vertebra in his back in a violent high-side during morning warm-up for the June 20 British Grand Prix. Aoyama returned to the track last week when he tested his RC212V on the Brno Circuit the day after the Czech Grand Prix. Following the rain-abbreviated test, Aoyama didn?t want to commit to racing in Indianapolis. But a week on he and his doctors decided his fitness level was such that he felt confident in returning.

Aoyama knows that, even though he?s been cleared to race, he doesn?t know how he?ll feel after riding the Honda RC212V and that he?ll still have to be cautious. Having missed six races, he doesn?t want to do anything that would risk re-aggravating the injury or suffering a setback as the championship heads towards its climax.

The two American venues couldn?t be more different. The late-July U.S. Grand Prix was held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the shortest and tightest GP venue, a rollicking, yet intimate, 3.610k natural road course draped over the hills of Monterey, California. By contrast, the Indianapolis Grand Prix is held on a 4.218k road course which is mostly built within, and utilizes stretches of, the famed 2.5-mile/4.02k Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. The road course was originally conceived for Formula One, with a few fixes added to accommodate motorcycles. Because of the mixture the new and the old, the track has several different surfaces, and therefore varying degrees of grip, though the differences become less noticeable with each passing year.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway is epic in scale, the world?s largest spectator sporting facility with more than 250,000 permanent seats. Home to the famed Indianapolis 500, the more than 100-year-old facility sprawls over an area so vast that you could fit Wembley Stadium, San Siro, Camp Nou, the Roman Colosseum, and Vatican City inside. The first ever motorized competition at the venue was a motorcycle race held in 1909 on a crushed stone surface sprayed with tar. Just a few days later the first car race was held, but the track surface produced so many accidents that a decision was made to cover the crushed rock and tar surface with 3.2 million paving bricks.

The track was covered by macadam in phases, but the ?Yard of Bricks? at the finish line have remained intact since late in 1961 when all but that one meter of bricks was replaced. The race winner has a tradition of kissing the bricks, a tradition the Honda riders would like to enjoy this year.

From Indianapolis, the teams immediately return to the Continent for the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano the following weekend.

HONDA MotoGP RIDER QUOTES

Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa says:?I?m going to Indianapolis in a very good mood and I?m feeling ready to finish the job we weren?t able to complete in the race there last time. I felt really comfortable riding in Indy last year. I was on top of the timesheets from the first practice, I took pole position and the only mistake I made was in the race. So I hope this time we can put together a strong weekend and take another good result. We were fast and consistent at the last race in Brno and we?ll be aiming to get straight back on that pace again this weekend. It will be important, as always, to establish a good machine setting quickly on Friday, and I think we have a useful base from last year that will help us to find the right direction straight away. We were ready to win again in Brno and this will be our goal in Indianapolis too. Riding in America is different, the Indianapolis circuit is very impressive and I feel very good racing in the States because the support I get from the fans is always very positive. So I?m really looking forward to get out there.?

Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso says:?I always look forward to racing in the U.S.A. and this time is no different. I like visiting America, and the Indianapolis race track is a typical American venue with great facilities and huge grandstands. The MotoGP track is not particularly interesting but the atmosphere is always special. The circuit has many different surface types and last year this was a bit difficult for us, but I think that with this year?s machine package - and especially with the current weight distribution - the variety of asphalt and different levels of grip won?t be an issue. If I look back to the Brno GP I have to say that - except for the final result - it was a good weekend. We were competitive, our race pace was good but the result did not come. So we go to Indy determined to transform this good performance into a result. We need strong results for the team and for the championship position. Last year I was fourth at Indy in the race, but we weren?t as fast as the front runners - Dani especially was very fast. But this means that we have the potential to do well and this is an extra motivation for the weekend.?

LCR Honda rider Randy de Puniet says:

?Indianapolis is almost a new track for us and we do not have so many data to check. The grip level is different in every part of the surface. I do not like this track so much and in my opinion it is not safe enough. Last year I was there despite the injury of my left ankle and once again this year I am not at 100%, but I am not worried about it. Indy has a lot of left corners which is not helpful for my leg but in the last 10 days I made a lot of sport to reinforce the muscles so I feel confident ahead the American GP. I will try to finish in the top eight this time.?

San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Melandri says:

?After disappointing performances on Friday and Saturday at Brno, the race in the Czech Republic restored some faith. In the second part I managed to find the right feeling with the bike, which gave me more enthusiasm and conviction to tackle the Monday tests, during which we made small but significant progress. We found some things with the suspension that bode well for the rest of the season. If we work with the same determination from Friday in Indianapolis we can score a good result in the race. The circuit is quite difficult to ride, but if I can find a good feeling with my Honda RC212V I can be close to the lead group."

San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli says:
I came away from Brno feeling somewhat disappointed by the final result but quite happy with the first part of the race. Unfortunately the drop in engine power in the second part did not allow me to be as fast and aggressive and it left a sour taste in my mouth. In any case we did not lose heart and we went into the test on Monday with great determination and managed to make some important steps forward. We gained more confidence with the electronics and were able to better interpret the engine management system. It was a shame that the rain brought it to a premature end because it was a very important test for me and my team and we still have some work to do on the chassis, which we didn't get time for. I still go to Indianapolis in the right spirit, I like the track and I won the first and only 250 race to take place here. I expect to have a good race and aim to finish inside the top six."

Interwetten Honda MotoGP rider Hiroshi Aoyama says:
?Today I had another x-ray after nine weeks since the crash. The damaged vertebra is still in the same shape, so it means that the bone is stable and the doctor gave me the okay for riding the bike in Indianapolis. Normally this state after an injury like mine is quite delicate, as the shape of the bone can change and lose some of its heights, but my bone looks good and is stable. I am so happy to come back and ride my bike again, but still I have to be careful. I want to be fast, but it will not be easy after this long time, because I will have to gain strength again first. First I want to get the feeling back with the bike, then I can concentrate on being fast. I missed six races-that is a lot-and I am so happy that finally I am back with my team and with my bike. In Indianapolis I have to see how much I will be capable of riding the bike and how much pain I will have. I am confident that I will have the feeling back quick, but we will have to see my physical condition once I am in action again. I can`t wait to come back.?

Rizla Suzuki looking for more at Indianapolis

Rizla Suzuki will be looking to make big improvements during tomorrow?s final free practice session after a tough first hour on the track at Indianapolis today left both riders with work to do.

?lvaro Bautista (P14, 1?42.696, 26 laps) used today?s only session to get his bearings around the 4,216m Indianapolis Motor Speedway on a MotoGP bike. Having only previously visited the circuit on a 250cc machine, he needed time to get used to the track and find his braking and accelerating points. Bautista recorded his fastest lap right at the end of the session and is in a determined mood to make personal improvements for the rest of the weekend.

Loris Capirossi (P15, 1?42.790, 24 laps) had a torrid afternoon as his first bike had a small mechanical issue that couldn?t be rectified for him to continue to use it and his other machine didn?t give him the feel he was looking for around the American circuit. Capirossi and his crew will use all the data from today to hopefully make sure the settings are more to his liking and riding style for tomorrow?s two sessions.

Today?s practise was held in warm and sunny conditions with track temperatures reaching 51?C. Casey Stoner on his factory Ducati recorded the fastest time of the day.

Rizla Suzuki has one more practice session tomorrow morning, followed by an hour of qualifying in the afternoon. Sunday?s 28 lap race gets underway at 15.00hrs local time (19.00hrs GMT).

?lvaro Bautista:

?This was my first time around here on a MotoGP bike and it was very different from the 250 - especially the first corner because you go in there very fast. I used this practice very much as a learning session and to get my reference points sorted for the rest of the weekend. I need to get more rear grip from the bike because when I put on the gas in the middle of the corner I feel that the bike is sliding too much. Also the entry to the corner is not what I want, because if I enter quick I am unable to turn the bike how I want to and I lose too much time. Tomorrow we will work on these things and although we know it will be hard work I think we can improve the bike and I also know I need to improve myself as well.?

Loris Capirossi:

?The best way to set-up our bike is to just keep running as long as we can and do as many laps as possible, but today on the second run on the first bike we had a bit of a problem and had to change to the other machine. Unfortunately it had quite a different setting and I just couldn?t get on with it. We will use the data we got from the runs though and it will help us to understand what we have to do tomorrow. Today has not been too good, but we are a lot more positive about things for the rest of the weekend.

Tom O?Kane ? ?lvaro Bautista?s Crew Chief:

?We used the new chassis in ?lvaro?s bike today, but we didn?t make as big a step as we expected to when we swapped to the softer compound tyre. For tomorrow we will be working a lot on rear grip because ?lvaro is struggling to get the feel he wants all the way through the turns and to get the best out of the soft tyre. We are really hoping to improve the bike on corner entry, because some of the corners tighten up a lot here and we really need to make the bike turn much better. Overall though we are pleased with ?lvaro?s first day at Indianapolis and now he?s got this session under his belt I am sure he will be much stronger tomorrow and for the race on Sunday.?

A GOOD START FOR ESPARGARO' IN INDIANAPOLIS. KALLIO WITH A STRONG FLU CONCLUDES THIRTEENTH.

Discreet approach of the Pramac Racing Team riders at the first free practice on Indianapolis's circuit. Aleix Espargar?, was for long time one of the top eight riders of the ranking, but he has had to settle for the ninth overall position with just a second of gap from the first rider of the ranking, Casey Stoner on the official Ducati. Rather difficult test for the Finn Mika Kallio that was having a strong flu, he had conquered the thirteenth fastest time during the first practice, stopping the clock with a gap of a half second from his teammate. The hope is that tomorrow the Finn may be again in top physical condition so that he can be more aggressive on the track. Both riders will be able to lower their lap times during the second free practice of tomorrow morning that will be before the qualifying session that will start at 2 pm local time.

Marco Rigamonti - Track Engineer Aleix Espargar?

"Aleix continues to confirm its value: this ninth position bodes very well for tomorrow's qualifying, in which we'll try to have a good starting position. We still have some grip problems with the front, we have already identified some changes on his bike that will allow him to be fast in all sectors of the track. We have look after Aleix telemetry data, we have seen that he is able to be very close to the fastest riders in the third sector, but he has a big gap in the first sector. We will work hard to ensure that his bike is perfectly balanced."

Aleix Espargar? - Pramac Racing Team - 9th fastest time in 1'41 .992

"It is great to be back on the track of my MotoGP debut. Even last year I had a great feeling with this track and now things are going in the right way. I am satisfied with the work we have done with my engineers that have managed to balance my bike and best way suiting my characteristics. I still have some problems in the first sector of the track where I cannot take advantage of my bike's power and I can't be fast as I want. The gap from the first rider of the ranking is not huge and this gives me a great charge for tomorrow's qualifying session. I will give my best to conquer a good position on the starting grid. "

Mika Kallio - Pramac Racing Team - 13th fastest time in 1'42 .600

"This morning I did not feel very well. I have the flu and I was afraid of not being able to ride my bike. Then, thanks also to the mobile clinic, I recover a little managing to ride even if not in the best physical condition. With my technician we have identified some changes to make on my bike that we'll try during the second free practice session of tomorrow morning. I cannot be very fast in the second last sector because of the slow chicane. I also have some stability problems in the last sector of the track that is fast part that end on the finish line. Thanks also to the changes we have made today, I'll try to improve my position tomorrow and gain a good position on Sunday's starting grid."

LORENZO AND ROSSI SECOND AND FIFTH IN INDIANAPOLIS SUNSHINE

The first free practice of the Indianapolis Grand Prix weekend was run in blazing sunshine at the Motor Speedway today, with Fiat Yamaha Team riders Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi finishing the day in second and fifth positions. The fastest time of the day was set by Casey Stoner, just two tenths ahead of Lorenzo.
Last year's race winner Lorenzo felt confident from the outset and was at the top of the time sheets for three quarters of the session before Stoner just edged him out. The young Spaniard made some subtle tweaks to his setting to better suit the flat nature of this track and also had time to try both Bridgestone race tyres, about which he already feels confident of his direction for Sunday.

Rossi struggled a little more today, lacking grip on the bumpy surface and lacking pace as a result. He and his team will make a detailed examination of the data tonight to try to find a way to improve their setting so they are in a position to challenge for the front row in tomorrow afternoon's qualifying session.

Both Fiat Yamaha riders are once again running the special ?Fiat 500' livery that was showcased in Laguna Seca earlier this season. The livery celebrates the forthcoming launch of the Fiat 500 in the United States and features the smiling faces of 500 Rossi and Lorenzo fans on each bike.

Jorge Lorenzo Position: 2nd Time: 1'41.109 Laps: 26

"I rode really well today and improved a lot during the practice. The rear was sliding a lot, maybe because the temperature is so high; it's a lot hotter than last year! I think the level between the top riders here is more or less the same and everyone is looking very strong. Then everyone will improve further tomorrow and we must make sure we do so as well. It will be a good battle! Finally I want to say congratulations to Ben Spies, next year he will join the Factory Team and I think it's great news for him and for Yamaha."

Valentino Rossi Position: 5th Time: 1'41.623 Laps: 27
"My physical condition is much better here; I so still have some pain but it's not too bad so I am not worried. I am feeling confident on the bike but we have to improve our setting in order to improve our pace because we are lacking some grip here. It's not an easy track because there are a lot of bumps. We did quite a lot of work today but it wasn't enough and the gap to the top is too much. Our target for tomorrow morning is to close this gap so that we're in better shape to push for a good position on the grid."

Wilco Zeleenberg Team Manager

"This was a very nice practice session for us and we were able to try everything we needed to try. We're quite happy to be second and the handling and balance is quite good. It's very bumpy of course and we need to work a little bit to minimise the wheelie in places, but basically it feels good for Jorge. We also know the direction for the tyres already so this is everything we could wish for today."

Davide Brivio Team Manager

"We struggled a bit today and we need to do some more work to try to find the right package for this track. We started with our standard setting and now we need to continue to try to make it work how we want. It's just the first session so we have time. There is nothing very specific, we're lacking some grip and so we need to make the tyre work better for us. We will have a look at the data tonight and keep on with it tomorrow."

INTERWETTEN HONDA MotoGP TEAM - First practice went well for Aoyama

Hiroshi Aoyama returned to active racing this afternoon at the first free practice of the U.S. Grand Prix in Indianapolis. After a crash in the Warm up of the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, where he broke his 12th vertebra, he had to pause for two months and is now back in action. The 28 year old Japanese already proved at the post-race-test in Brno two weeks ago that he is ready for a return and continued with his good form also today in the first free practice at Indianapolis.

Aoyama finished this practice on sixteenth position with less than a two second gap to first and 0,084 seconds on the previous rider at position 15. This was a satisfying first session for Aoyama and the Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team and the performance he showed in the 27 laps the MotoGP rookie rode that his physical condition already improved since the test in Brno.

Hiroshi Aoyama, 16 - 1'42.874:
"Like all the first practices of any Grand Prix also this one was not easy for me. I have to find my rhythm again and get there step by step. I am still careful in the turns, as I don't want to risk too much. My back is not 100% okay yet. But at the end I was able to go faster than I expected to. I am satisfied with the practice today. My feeling with the bike was not bad and I felt that I am coming back now.

Daniel M. Epp, Team Manager:
"Regarding the fact that Hiro is not 100% fit yet, the first practice went really well. Hiro was able to continue his good form he showed in Brno at the test and he was only missing 0,7 seconds on Melandri's tenth position. He did well and I hope that this race weekend will continue without pain and physical problems for Hiro."

Confident start for Edwards and Spies at sun-drenched Indianapolis

Colin Edwards and Ben Spies made a fast and confident start to the Indianapolis MotoGP weekend today, the American duo immediately able to set a competitive pace in opening practice.

Edwards will set a personal milestone on home soil on Sunday when he becomes only the 13th rider in history to start 130 premier class races. And he made an impressive start to the landmark weekend at the world famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The 36-year-old concentrated on fine-tuning a revised front-end geometry setting he first used in Brno earlier this month on board his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 YZR-M1 machine.
Edwards was a persistent threat in the top six throughout the session, which was run in gloriously sunny conditions that saw air temperatures hit 28 degrees. The Texan was as high as third in the final 20 minutes and his best time of 1.41.664 left him just 0.041s behind reigning world champion Valentino Rossi in sixth place overall.

Edwards though was delighted with his progress today and his lap times bode well for a strong showing in Sunday's 28-lap race after he finished top non-factory rider.

GP11Just as impressive was team-mate Spies, who wasted no time in establishing himself in the top three in the early stages. Spies gave a sun-soaked and sizeable home crowd reason to cheer from the off when he topped the timesheets in the opening 15 minutes.
Spies, who will move to Yamaha's factory squad in 2011 after a fantastic first full season in MotoGP with the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 squad, was always in contention for a top three position as he reeled off a series of consistently fast laps on race tyres.

Not even a late crash could take the shine off a productive afternoon for the 26-year-old, who ended in eighth position, a result that certainly didn't reflect his true potential.

Spies lost the front-end of his YZR-M1 machine after hitting a bumpy section at turn six and he ended with a best time of 1.41.722 to finish less than one-tenth behind Edwards.

Colin Edwards 6th 1.41.664 ? 24 laps

?I'm really happy with that session because the bike felt good and that's the main thing. We've had so many races this year where I've struggled finding a good set-up quickly and we've been trying to catch up right from the first session. But the front-end setting we first tried in Brno is working well here too, so it seems like we made a big breakthrough at the last race. Now I can hold good corner speed instead of fighting the bike, and I feel more confident and comfortable. I've always said this season that if the bike is working underneath me, I can still ride it fast. And that is the case now. I got my best result of the season with seventh in Brno and that gave me some momentum. We've just got to carry it on and show what we are capable of."

Ben Spies 8th 1.41.722 ? 25-laps

?I'm actually pretty happy with that session even though it ended not so great with the crash. I'm not too upset because it was one of those crashes that I know what I did wrong. There's a bump going into turn six and I turned in a little too early. I knew I was turning in too early but I thought I wasn't pushing the front hard enough to make a difference. But as soon as I hit the bump I lost the front. I missed the last five minutes and I definitely could have gone quicker because the bike was working good and I felt good. I was right up there all the time but I just made a mistake. Without that I'm sure I could have gone three or four tenths faster and been in a better position. But I did quite a lot of consistent fast laps and we have a lot of good data on race tyres, so it was a good start to the weekend.?

INTERWETTEN HONDA MotoGP TEAM - 13th place on the grid for strong performer Aoyama

Hiroshi Aoyama was surprised himself about the great result of the qualifying for the U.S. Grand Prix in Indianapolis today and gave also the Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team a big motivation for the remaining weekend. Aoyama finished the session as 13th after he has to stay home for two months with a broken vertebra.

Aoyama says that he did not expect such a result, but knows that in Qualifying you only need one fast lap and not 28 laps like in a race. Nevertheless the 28 year old Japanese will not start the race tomorrow with pressure as the concentration will not lay on the result in the race here in Indianapolis. It is more important that he gets back into the racing flow. The strong performance let the Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team and Aoyama peek at a better result in the race as well though.

Hiroshi Aoyama, 13 - 1'41.631:
"If you look at the conditions I am here with, I really did not expect such a result today. The gap to the other riders is not big though, neither in front, nor in the back. All possibilities are open, to the front, but also to the back. We have to be realistic. I was quite at the limit today, but I think after a two months break this was not a bad start and I am happy about that."

Daniel M. Epp, Team Manager:
"The Qualifying went better than we expected. Nevertheless we don't want to expect too much for the race tomorrow as I think Hiro cannot keep this pace during a whole race yet. But this is not the target and never was for Indy. Hiro needs a little bit more time and then we will see where he can be."

Super Spies storms to sensational maiden pole position

Ben Spies' remarkable rookie MotoGP campaign hit a new high today when the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team rider stormed to a stunning maiden pole position at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Texan thrilled a large and sun drenched home crowd with a startling performance at the historic 4.216km circuit, Spies topping the timesheets with an incredible late attack to claim a first pole position for the Tech 3 squad since the China Grand Prix in 2008.

Spies had spent most of the qualifying session, which was run in searing temperatures that peaked at a punishing 33 degrees, concentrating on a crucial race set-up for tomorrow's 28-lap encounter.

But as soon as the field switched to the softer compound Bridgestone rear tyre, Spies was in devastating form and always looked like challenging for a second successive front row start.

There were 12 minutes left on the clock when a lap of 1.40.465 saw him rocket from ninth to the top of the timesheets. That impressive pace put him a fraction ahead of Jorge Lorenzo.

Lorenzo and compatriot Nicky Hayden were both able to lap faster than Spies in the closing stages and relegate him momentarily to third. But the 26-year-old wasn't finished and he produced an immaculate lap of 1.40.105 to seize back the initiative by 0.220s from Lorenzo.

Spies was denied pole position in the dying moments at the previous round in Brno, but his pace today was unmatched and only Lorenzo, Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso lapped within 0.5s of the reigning World Superbike champion.

Colin Edwards will start tomorrow's race from ninth, his final grid position certainly not a reflection of his pace on race tyres. The 36-year-old has shown strong form all weekend on the harder compound Bridgestone rear tyre but was unable to significantly improve his pace on the softer option this afternoon.

Sizzling track temperatures that hit 54 degrees meant grip was at a premium this afternoon and although Edwards did find himself in the top six at one stage, he had to settle for a spot on the third row with a best time of 1.41.432.

Ben Spies 1st 1.40.105 ? 28 laps

?This is a great feeling for me to get my first MotoGP pole position and for it to come in front of the American crowd and here at Indianapolis with all the history makes it even more special. And I'm glad for the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team too. This team helped catapult me into this position and I've been trying to give as much for them as I can, even though I'll be moving to Yamaha's factory team next year. I've got to say I really put it on the line this afternoon. I'd come so close at Brno a couple of weeks ago to getting my first pole position and I really wanted to finish the job on home soil. And being on the front row with Nicky too is pretty incredible for MotoGP racing in America. There was no way coming into this weekend that I thought this result was possible. Bur I've been able to do it and now I'm going to concentrate on getting a good start and giving it everything in the race. I'd love a podium and my best result at home but I'm not going to get ahead of myself. But right now I'll certainly enjoy today.?

Colin Edwards 9th 1.41. 232- 27 laps

?Honestly I expected to be a bit higher up than ninth and after this morning I felt I could get into the mid-40s and be on the second row. But it was really hot out there this afternoon and it made the track quite slippery. When you put the soft tyres on you expect to go a fair bit faster but I didn't really improve much at all. Normally I'd expect to shave off three-quarters-of-a-second but I just didn't have the grip in the heat. On the hard tyre for the race we've got a good setting and I'm confident of a strong race. I've had a good pace on the hard tyre all weekend so a top six and my best result of the season is not out of the question. I'd like to congratulate Ben too because his performance today was just fantastic. He did an awesome job and it is great for the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team too.?

UNLUCKY QUALIFYING SESSION FOR THE PRAMAC RACING TEAM RIDERS. ESPARGARO' AND KALLIO WILL START THE RACE FROM THE FIFTH ROW.

Unlucky qualifying session for the Pramac Racing Team riders that had conquer the fourteenth and fifteenth position on the starting grid respectively with Espargar? and Kallio. The Spaniard had finished this morning free practice in tenth position with just a second of gap from the first of the ranking. It was expected much more from him in this afternoon qualifying session but due to a fall that saw him lose nearly fifteen minutes, he was unable to improve his time clocked in the first part of qualifying. Pity, because the time clocked by Aleix in this morning free practice would made him be in tenth position. Mika Kallio, who has recovered slightly by the flu which has affected his yesterday performance, managed to decrease by almost one second his fastest time recorded in yesterday morning free practice, but this was not enough to climb the rankings. Both riders will start tomorrow in the fifth row and they will try to significantly improve their position to get a positive result in the race that will begin at 2 pm local time.

Fabiano Sterlacchini - Technical Director

"During qualifying session we tried various technical solutions that could allow Mika to be faster in all areas. Unfortunately he still has some problems in the second sector of the track. We saw something very positive at the end of the qualifying session but due to excessive traffic he had found on the track, Mika was not able to improve his best lap time. Tomorrow I certainly expect from both riders a better position. We think we have found a good setup that we will try tomorrow morning during the warm up. We'll start from the back of the grid, but we aim to achieve a good result in tomorrow's race. "

Aleix Espargar? - Pramac Racing Team - 14th fastest time in 1'41 .649
"Pity for the fall, I was pushing hard to try to get a good position on the starting grid, but I lost the rear tyre and I slid on the asphalt. I immediately tried to get back on my bike but it had got some damage during the fall. Unfortunately when I return in the box I hadn't got new qualifying tyres. I tried in all the way to lower my lap time and improve my starting grid position but with no good results. The good thing is that the gap from the tenth position is less than two tenths. This gives me a huge charge for tomorrow race."

Mika Kallio - Pramac Racing Team - 15th fastest time in 1'41 .856

"Fortunately I feel better than yesterday, but I was not able to greatly improve my position on the starting grid. Unfortunately due to my yesterday's not perfect conditions, I hadn't got the right feeling with my bike. We worked hard with my technician during qualifying session and tomorrow during the warm up we will try some solutions that should allow me to be faster in all the sectors. The gap from the tenth position is not so big, I'll give everything to offer to my Team a good race result. "

Rizla Suzuki side-by-side on the fourth row

Rizla Suzuki racers Loris Capirossi and ?lvaro Bautista will start tomorrow?s Indianapolis Grand Prix alongside each other on the fourth row of the grid.

Capirossi (P10, 1?41.512, 25 laps) will begin tomorrow?s 28 lap race from the front of row four, with team-mate Bautista (P11, 1?4.534, 29 laps) next to him. The pair both made steps to improve their respective Suzuki GSV-Rs around the 4,216m American circuit and they are confident that these measures will help them in tomorrow?s race. Capirossi is still looking to unlock some more of the potential of his GSV-R and will probably make a couple of changes in tomorrow?s warm-up ahead of the race, whilst Bautista made big advances with learning the circuit on a MotoGP machine and is confident that he can improve even more during the race.

Today?s qualifying was held in warm and sunny conditions with track temperatures again over 50?C. Ben Spies took his first ever MotoGP pole position, as he rode his satellite Yamaha to the front of the grid ahead of World Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo in second.

Tomorrow?s event is the 11th race of the season and the action gets underway at 15.00hrs local time (19.00hrs GMT).

Loris Capirossi:

?We saw a little bit more promise in the qualifying; it was like the sun started to shine on us. We had struggled a bit in practice and we tried to fix things and improve the feeling and it seemed like we have started to do that. We are still struggling a bit with front feeling, but the whole team has worked really hard to fix this and we are pretty close to a solution now. My bike is not very good on top-speed here and we don?t know why, we have compared the data from last year and we are a bit slower so we will have to try and do something about that. I am quite happy with this afternoon because we improved a lot from this morning and yesterday. The rhythm we have is not too bad and if we can do the same in the race I think we should be ok. I am positive for the race and will start will full throttle ? I?m just going to go for it.?

?lvaro Bautista:

?We had a good qualifying and I was able to follow a pack that included Rossi, Dovizioso and Pedrosa and I didn?t lose too much time to them on every lap, so that was good for me as I needed to get an idea of how I was doing in comparison to other riders around here. After that I tried to push myself a bit more, but I still had a bit of a problem with rear grip and it made things a bit hard. We made some small changes to the bike and improved things quite a bit. At the end I tried to follow someone to get more reference points because they are so important here, but there was nobody to follow so I had to work alone and set my times by myself. I think our set-up for the race is not too bad and if I get a good start tomorrow and get into the group in front I can stay with them.?

Stuart Shenton ? Loris Capirossi?s Crew Chief:

?It was not a bad qualifying, especially considering we had a couple of issues in the two practice sessions. Loris was a lot happier with the bike this afternoon, but it does seem to be tough for us to get in the top-10 in qualifying and we?ve just managed to scrape in there today. We still might make a couple of little changes in the warm-up tomorrow and then we?ll be looking for Loris to get a good start and see if he can move a couple of places forward and be battling well inside the top-10.?

THIRD AND FOURTH FOR FIAT YAMAHA IN INTENSE INDIANAPOLIS HEAT

Jorge Lorenzo finished third at Indianapolis today and Fiat Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi fourth in a punishingly hot race won by Dani Pedrosa. Tech 3 Yamaha and future Factory Team rider Ben Spies finished second, his best result so far in his rookie MotoGP season.

Lorenzo dropped three places on his grid position at the start and finished the first lap in fifth with his team-mate close behind. On lap three of 28 the championship leader made it past home favourite Nicky Hayden and he set off in pursuit of Andrea Dovizioso, arriving within striking distance by the eighth lap. The Italian did not make it easy for Lorenzo however and it took the Mallorcan several more laps to pass him, which he did on the brakes into turn one on lap 12. By that time Spies was too far ahead for Lorenzo to make much headway on second place so he settled for third and 16 points to add to his already hefty season tally.

Rossi meanwhile had jumped from seventh to fifth at the start and looked more comfortable on the bike than he had all weekend, during which he had struggled for grip and rhythm. On the fourth lap he overtook Nicky Hayden and settled in fifth, a few tenths off the Lorenzo-Dovizioso battle. Once Lorenzo was past Dovizioso, the World Champion too began to close down his compatriot and with eight laps remaining he passed him for fourth place. By then however his lack of fitness following his injury had caught up with him in the searing heat and he was unable to push any more, coming home some six seconds behind his team-mate.

Lorenzo continues to sit comfortably at the top of the standings, with a 68-point lead over Pedrosa. Rossi remains fifth but has moved to within five points of Casey Stoner and fourth. The MotoGP paddock now has just a few days rest before it reconvenes at Misano in Italy for round 12 of the World Championship.

Jorge Lorenzo Position: 3rd Time: +6.812

"Of course I shouldn't be disappointed with third place but at the same time I'm not happy with my race today, I didn't ride as well as I could have and I didn't get a good start. The conditions were incredibly hard and I simply didn't have the physical strength to push as hard or do the same times I did in practice; it was like a race in Malaysia! The track was so slippery and it was very difficult to use the tyres as you wanted to, I think honestly I'm quite lucky to have finished third today. The good thing is we took some points and now I have to concentrate on recovering before Misano because we don't have much time."

Valentino Rossi Position: 4th Time: +12.633

"This was a good race for us after the weekend. Fourth is quite good in the circumstances but the important thing is that my rhythm in the race was strong and I felt much happier on the bike. I did some good laps and I wasn't too far from the other Yamahas, but unfortunately I paid a lot for my lack of fitness in this heat and in the end I had to stop pushing because I didn't have any strength left in my body. I'm happy though because we came back to a good setting and with me riding well, and if you consider I had three small crashes in the weekend, fourth isn't so bad. Now we will look forward to Misano, my home race!"

Wilco Zeelenberg Team Manager

"These were terribly hard conditions for the riders and considering this we have to be very happy with third. It was so hot and so easy to make a mistake so before the race we told Jorge to just try to bring it home on two wheels! Unfortunately he had a bad start which didn't help because he then had a hard task to get past Dovizioso, but considering the conditions and the championship we're just as happy with this as with one of our seven wins."

Davide Brivio Team Manager

"This was a really positive race for us and Valentino showed us that he could keep the pace of the front runners. Unfortunately he's still not in peak condition after his accident and with the heat he wasn't strong enough to keep the same pace for the whole race, but he fought at the top end, stayed close and showed us that he's okay. It gives us confidence for our overall set-up and our package for the next races. We came out well from a difficult weekend so well done to everyone."

NTERWETTEN HONDA MotoGP TEAM - Successful Comeback for Aoyama in Indianapolis
Two months Hiroshi Aoyama had to watch the races in TV, one whole month he had to lay on his back after the nasty crash in Silverstone in June where he fractured his 12th vertebra during the Warm up. This weekend the 28 year old Japanese is back to active racing and he showed that he is ready with a strong performance.

Already in qualifying yesterday Aoyama impressed with a 13th position on the grid and he continued with this performance in the race today by finishing the U.S. Grand Prix in Indianapolis with 12th place. Aoyama didn't want to risk anything under the given physical conditions he is in and will continue his reintegration in Misano next weekend.

Hiroshi Aoyama, 12 - 47'57.903:

"Under the given conditions here at Indy it was quite hard to finish the 28 laps. I had to fight in every single lap. I could stay with the other riders, but didn't want to risk anything. I had to find a compromise not to go too far and over my possibilities and still have a good race. Surely we can be better than that when I am 100% fit again and I am looking forward to that so much."

Daniel M. Epp, Team Manager:

"Hiro did a good job this weekend. He was reasonable and found a good way back into racing. He was able to race a whole race distance. Of course he needs more time to be fully fit again and physically more confident. He already showed in the qualifying with the fast lap times that he is on the right way. The team hit the target of this weekend and I am glad about it and I look forward to continue in the same direction in Misano."

ESPARGARO' GAIN A TOP TEN POSITION IN INDIANAPOLIS GRAND PRIX: NINTH. KALLIO BETRAYED BY A HOLE IN THE ASPHALT.
It could have been the first top ten for both Pramac Racing Team riders. Unfortunately, a hole in the asphalt of Indianapolis circuit has made Mika Kallio slip ten laps from the end when the Finn was fighting for the seventh position. Pity, because Mika, who had not try in the better way his bike during Friday's free practice due to a strong flu, was running with a very fast pace that would have allowed him to gain a position in the top ten. Mika has started the race from the fifteenth position, he had made a good start that allowed him to close the first lap in the twelfth position very close to the group of riders that where fighting for the top positions. In few laps, he managed to climb into eighth place thanks also to the fall of Melandri and Stoner ahead of him. Pramac Racing Team rider was then overtake by Bautista that was faster than him. Together they have reduce the gap from Simoncelli that was lonely turning in seventh position. Unfortunately, an asphalt disconnection haven't allowed to Mika to end his good race. Aleix Espargar? had regained a position in the top ten, a ninth position, which bodes well for the rest of the season. The Spaniard seems to have returned to have confidence in his abilities. Confidence and speed that had allowed him to win in the first half of the season some good placements. Although the race was hard for Aleix, from early laps he found himself fighting with the riders ahead of him. On the fifth lap he made a double overtake Capirossi and Edwards and in few laps he have sewed up the gap between himself and his teammate. Unfortunately in the final laps his pace did not allow him to stay close to the riders that where fighting for the seventh position, Simoncelli and Bautista, and had to settle to close the race in ninth position. The focus is now moving on Misano where in one week will take place the twelfth round of the MotoGP season.

Fabiano Sterlacchini - Technical Director

"Too bad about Mika's fall, he was having a very good pace that would allow him to fight with other riders for the seventh position. After Brno's fall he aimed to achieve a good result on this track, but unfortunately he had found a hole in the asphalt that saw him lose his front tyre. I'm happy for the ninth place that Aleix had gain, he has returned in the top ten after a difficult period. During this morning warm up we tried some solutions on both bikes that allowed the riders to be fast in all points of the track, we had positive feedback that would lead to a double top ten."

Aleix Espargar? - Pramac Racing Team - 9th in the race - 14th in the world Championship

"It's so hot here, I did a sauna inside my leather suit, I had never run with a similar wheatear condition. I'm really exhausted after this race but very happy to have finished my race in the better way. I was able to start very well and to not lose positions, in the early laps I tried to get my rhythm and overtake the other riders. On the fifth lap, I both overtake Capirossi and Edwards and I sewed up the gap with Mika. Unfortunately I could not have a lap pace that would allow me to be with the others. With the heat the track had became very slippery, during the last laps I tried to complete my race without taking unnecessary further risks. After the summer break I came back in a perfect shape, I cannot wait to race on Misano's, which is one of my favorites.

Mika Kallio - Pramac Racing Team - DNF the race - 16th in the World Championship

"What a bad luck, this is not the right way. I had start a lot better than usual, at the end of the first lap I had conquer three positions. Then thanks to the drop of some riders and to the overtake that I had made on Bautista, I was riding in eighth position with almost four seconds behind Simoncelli. During the eighth lap I was passed again by Bautista, who was faster than me at that time. Together we started to run with a very fast pace and in seven laps we sew up the gap we had from Simoncelli. I was fighting with Simoncelli and Bautista for the seventh position, but in a curve due to a hole in the asphalt I have instantly lost the front tyre and found myself with my face on the asphalt. I could easily fight with the others for the seventh position or at least I could gain a top ten position. I am very disappointed with how things went, but as so often is happening during this season for one reason or another I cannot get the results I deserve."

Sensational Spies claims career best second at Indianapolis

Ben Spies treated a patriotic home crowd at the world famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway to an all-action display in today's MotoGP race, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider ending a fantastic weekend with a career best second position.

Starting from pole position for the first time in his premier class career, Spies made a blistering start and streaked away from the field in the early stages with a succession of fast laps as he looked at ease leading a MotoGP race for the first time.

Such was Spies' phenomenal early speed that he was a second clear after just three laps, the reigning World Superbike champion leaving his illustrious rivals trailing in his wake. Only Dani Pedrosa was able to get close to matching his rhythm as a crowd of over 62,000 fans roared the Texan on.

Spies was producing heroics to keep Pedrosa at bay but the Spaniard made a decisive attack on lap seven to move into the lead. Spies produced a super human effort in gruelling heat and humidity to try and keep the pressure on Pedrosa before he eventually eased off to secure a richly deserved second.

The 26-year-old's performance received a huge ovation from the appreciative Indianapolis crowed with Spies celebrating being top Yamaha rider for the first time in his career. And marking his career best result in front of his home fans shortly after confirming his 2011 move to Yamaha's factory team only made his accomplishment even more special.

Colin Edwards had a tough afternoon after he was one of only four riders to select the hardest compound Bridgestone rear tyre available for the 28-lap race. With temperatures and humidity higher than at any stage during the weekend, Edwards hoped his choice would enable him to mount a strong showing in the second half of the race.

But he opted to change to the softer compound tyre at the end of lap 11 and while his lap times instantly improved, the 36-year-old retired on lap 17.

Ben Spies 2nd ? 110 points

?I'm really happy to have got my best result in MotoGP in front of the American crowd and at a track as famous as Indianapolis. I always said I wanted my best result in my home race, so it's mission accomplished. After the pole position I got a great start and it felt good to be out front for the first time in MotoGP. But I didn't have the pace for Dani today and he rode a great race. I'm happy because I didn't make too many mistakes when I was out in front and I was consistent for the whole race. When Dani passed me I knew I couldn't follow him, so I let him go and concentrated on keeping a gap to Jorge in third and that's what I achieved. I can't complain because it was a great weekend and to be top Yamaha rider when you look at who else is on that bike is pretty satisfying. It hasn't sunk in yet that I've finished second in my home race. But I'll enjoy it before I hop on a plane and try and do it again in Misano next weekend.?

Colin Edwards DNF ? 57 points

?I went for the hard tyre because I'd done a 41.6 on that tyre on Friday and felt pretty comfortable and confident. I'd not been able to make the soft tyre last close to race distance. I'd started to have a problem after eight or nine laps with it, so with the temperature and humidity coming up I was getting excited about using the hard tyre. But I had a problem with edge grip from the start and I was having an issue turning. I was riding on the limit but way off the pace so I pulled in for the softer tyre and did a few laps and my lap times were immediately better. The tyre choice cost me today but congratulations to Ben. He's just riding at an amazing level and second in this field is something to be proud of.?

Herve Poncharal ? Team Manager

?That was a fantastic weekend from Ben and he delivered an unbelievable performance for the American fans. We could not have hoped for more and he showed why we are so sad to see him leaving us to join Yamaha's factory team next season. But I'm happy for him though because clearly with the factory team he will be with the top four. His pole position yesterday was incredible when you consider how tough it is to achieve that against such a high level of competition. He got an incredible start and he was very strong at the beginning of the race. Only Dani could match him and pass him but Ben rode immaculately and it never looked like Jorge was going to catch him. It wasn't the race Colin was expecting and unfortunately his decision to run the hard tyre didn't pay off. Conditions were very demanding but it was clear when he switched to the softer tyre that he had the pace to have scored possibly his best result of the season.?

Bautista takes an exciting eighth at a sweltering Indianapolis

Rizla Suzuki racer ?lvaro Bautista produced a battling and mature race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to bring his Suzuki GSV-R home in a respectable eighth place.

Bautista got boxed in at the start and was relegated to 14th at the end of the first lap; he quickly got on the pace and was able to pass some riders with relative ease. He caught up with Marco Simoncelli at half-distance and had a tremendous battle with the Italian for the rest of the race. Bautista tried a number of times to overtake his old adversary, but was unable to find the opportunity to get past ? mainly due to the condition of the Indianapolis circuit in the places where Bautista was sure he could make a move and his determination to get to the finish line and complete the race.

Loris Capirossi narrowly missed out on a top 10 position as he was pushed off the track on the last lap by Hector Barbera. Capirossi had caught and passed the Spaniard with two laps remaining, but Barbera hit him on the final lap, pushing him wide and on to the grass. Capirossi was visibly disappointed with the result today, not just from the aspect of the final lap incident, but also with a difficulty in finding the right feeling from his machine during the race, a situation that has seemed to trouble him all weekend.

Today?s race was held in very warm conditions with air temperatures getting up to 35?C and track surfaces hitting 56?C. A crowd of 62,794 saw Dani Pedrosa win the race with home favourite and pole setter Ben Spies in second, World Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo was third.

Rizla Suzuki now heads across the Atlantic for the San Marino and Riviera di Rimini Grand Prix to be staged at Misano in Italy next weekend on Sunday 5th September.

?lvaro Bautista:

?It was a hard and very difficult race because it was so hot that you could feel the heat coming from the bike and from the ground. It made it a very physical race, but that was also a good test for me to see how my body had healed and at the end I still felt strong. I lost a few places at the start, but I was able to overtake other riders very quickly and I got behind Kallio and decided to follow him because he had a good rhythm and I didn?t want to use all my energy with a long race ahead. We caught up to Simoncelli and I knew I was faster than Kallio so it was better to pass him and catch Simoncelli on my own. I saw two points on the track where I could then get past Simoncelli, but they were both very risky because they were very bumpy. I tried to get past in turn 10 but it was just too dangerous to go past because it was so bumpy and I wanted to finish the race - as it had been a long time since I?d done that. I finished in the top 10 and we did a good job through the whole weekend. This morning we made a big change in the gearbox and that worked very well for me. I am happy with the weekend and the team worked fantastic, we have another race next week and I?m looking forward to that already.?

Loris Capirossi:

?Sometimes the feeling in our bike is not too bad and sometimes it is difficult to ride, today it was very difficult and I didn?t really have any feeling in the front tyre and this has been a problem I?ve had many times this year - sometimes causing me to crash. It?s really difficult to find the limit, but it?s not that easy to just find the solution. Today I tried to keep my pace ? which was not as fast as I would want it to be ? and at the end I tried to attack Barbera. I got past him, but on the last lap he came in a bit too crazy and hit me and put me onto the grass, so I lost 10th position. I am a bit upset about today?s result because the bike has been up and down all weekend and today it was not so good. Everybody tried their hardest this weekend and that is very important, we now need to move on and see what happens next time.?

Tom O?Kane ? ?lvaro Bautista?s Crew Chief:

??lvaro rode a really solid race today, at a track that hasn?t been very good to us in the past, so that is a very promising thing to take forward as we move to tracks where our bike has gone better. We are really happy to get a finish and get through a whole race weekend without the dramas that we have had recently. ?lvaro made a big change to his gearbox this morning in the warm-up and we were able to see an improvement in his lap-times immediately ? especially in the second sector of the lap ? and he adapted to the different pattern of the box very quickly and that also showed in the race. Overall he rode a good race and had a tough battle with Simoncelli, it?s neither here-nor-there whether he got past him or not, but it was very important to get into the top-10 and for him to come away from here with a lot more confidence in his own ability and that of the bike.?

Dani Pedrosa storms the brickyard
Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V) continued his impressive 2010 season by winning his third MotoGP race of the season for the first time in his career, with today?s win coming in front of nearly 63,000 sun-drenched fans at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

American Ben Spies (Yamaha) finished second in front of Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha), with Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) fourth ahead of Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V).

The win was worth 25 valuable championship points to second-placed Pedrosa, who took nine back from Lorenzo, the championship leader after 11 of 18 races. But today belonged to Pedrosa.

Starting from the middle of the second row, Pedrosa jetted into fourth on the first lap as he set out to chase Spies, the early race leader in front of a jubilant home crowd.

Pedrosa took over third from Nicky Hayden (Ducati) on the third tour of the 4.216k road course, which was bumpier and, because of the 56C track temperature, greasier than last year, and demanded concentration to avoid the fate of so many riders who crashed on the weekend.

The third began a series of fast laps, each one quicker than the previous. On the fourth lap he passed his team-mate Dovizioso, again with a fastest lap, with Spies one second ahead.

There was another fast lap on the sixth, which set up the pass for the lead. Pedrosa used the power of his Honda RC212V to motor by Spies just as they crossed the famed ?Yard of Bricks? at start-finish ending the seventh lap.

Spies tried to stay with the Spaniard, but Pedrosa continued to lower his own fast lap mark on the eighth, ninth, and eleventh laps. The eleventh would be the fastest of the race (1m, 40.896s) and would give Pedrosa a lead of 2.787s.

By the time he took his third checkered flag of the season the gap was 3.575s.

Dovizioso would fall prey to Lorenzo on the twelfth lap. That put him in fourth, and he?d lose one more spot to Rossi on lap 20 of 28. The heat reduced grip levels significantly and Dovizioso couldn?t match his pace from qualifying. Still, he took over third in the championship just behind Pedrosa.

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) finished seventh in his first MotoGP race at the track known as ?The Brickyard.? Simoncelli was the only rider in the top seven to have a real fight on his hands for the second half of the race. The Italian was chased by three riders, then two, and finally just one. Alvaro Bautista (Suzuki) made a run at the stripe, coming up short by .085s.

Simoncelli?s team-mate had less luck. Marco Melandri started the race as the youngest rider ever to reach 200 GP?s, but it wasn?t to be a happy day. Melandri was pushing hard when he lost the front end on the third lap while in a strong seventh position.

The final two Honda riders both rode with injuries to score points. In his return to MotoGP after a more than two month lay-off, Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP) finished twelfth. Aoyama had broken his back in morning warm-up for the June 20 British Grand Prix. One place came Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda). De Puniet was in his second race after breaking his fibula in the German Grand Prix six weeks earlier. The left-biased layout, and strength-sapping heat, made the race more difficult for de Puniet than Brno, which was run only four weeks after he?d broken his left leg.

Following the championship?s second trip to the U.S., the paddock quickly packed their gear for the flights back to Europe and next Sunday?s San Marino Grand Prix in Misano, Italy.

HONDA MotoGP RIDER QUOTES

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V): 1st
?I?m really happy with this win and it was an especially tough one because of the heat today. I didn?t make the perfect start but I was quite quick through the first few tight corners and stayed close to the leaders. My rhythm was good today and even though Spies was strong in front I was able to close him down and make the pass. I?m really pleased with the performance of my bike because it was fast on the straights and also was working well in the corners. When I was out in front it was quite hard to stay focused and at the end of the race I was really tired - but I?m very happy because last year I crashed when I could have won and now I have made up for it. There were many crashes this weekend and it would have been easy to make a mistake in the race - you only need to go a little off line and you can be on the ground immediately, especially towards the end of the race when the tyres are worn. I?ve gone past the barrier of two MotoGP race wins in a season so I?m very happy. We are doing a good job and I hope we can maintain this momentum next weekend at Misano. I want to thank the team and all the people around me.?

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V): 5th

?I?m disappointed with this result because I expected to do better this afternoon. The conditions today were really critical. It was so hot - the asphalt was more than 50 degrees! - and the track lacked grip because of it. The result was that I was slower than yesterday. I made a good start and for a while we were close to the podium battle but I didn?t have enough speed to fight as the race progressed. Dani was really fast, he was very strong in the middle of the corner and also his style made the difference today. For two thirds of the race I could fight for the podium, then it was difficult for me to stay with the front guys. I think maybe I need to study how I can improve my position on the bike and my riding style. Now I?m just looking forward to going to Misano - which is my home GP - and I?m back into third in the championship so I have a lot of motivation to get a good result there.?

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V): 7th

?It was such a tough race - similar to Malaysia in that if you tried to push like you did in practice you could easily end up on the ground. I am quite happy with the result even though I would have liked to finish higher up, but hopefully that will come soon. I had a good fight with Bautista and was pleased to hold him off in the end. Apart from Spies I finished ahead of the other rookies so that also gives me a lot of satisfaction.?

Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP RC212V): 12th
?Under the given conditions here at Indy it was quite hard to finish the 28 laps. I had to fight in every single lap. I could stay with the other riders, but didn't want to risk anything. I had to find a compromise not to go too far and over my possibilities and still have a good race. Surely we can be better than that when I am 100% fit again and I am looking forward to that so much.?

Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda RC212V): 13th

?Honestly this was the most tough race for me since the beginning of the year, even more demanding than Brno! This track is heavily biased with ten left hand corners and six right hand corners which make changing direction very punishing. Then the surface is very bumpy and everybody struggled with grip levels. We tried to get the most from our bike and I even tried to change my riding style, but at the end I could not find my pace. I am still holding the 8th position in the classification and I am pretty sure that the next race we will be up there once again as I like Misano layout.?

Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V): DNF
? I am really disappointed with this race. We improved our pace a little but like always I was struggling so much in braking and couldn't get the bike stopped. I wasn't happy to just settle for the position I was in and wanted to attack Valentino, but lost the front without any warning on the way into the corner. We've spent all season trying to fix the same problem and don't seem able to find a way around it.?
