I hit the big 40 today.

No not me, I'm well past that milepost, the Blackbird reached 40,000 miles.

In almost four years, so whats gone wrong in that time?

1 cam chain tensioner
1 catalyst heater unit
1 Headlight bulb
a squirt of WD40 into the flasher switch

Consumables:
Chain and sprocket set at 38,000
5 front tyres
9 rear tyres
3 sets break pads

Valves never wanted adjustment

I bet there are lots of Birds out there with a lot more miles than this!

Your maths will be OK but other things to factor in is that one on now is new, punctures that have trashed the tyres, special deals for front/rear changed early, and "these tyres are rubbish - want to get rid".

Best: Sportec M1, but only get 3k from rear
