oh, and why do people keep saying youngsters cant afford to insure one???

at 22 it cost me about 400 quid, and now at 26, 150 quid. so, that blows that theory into the pool of bullshit.

but it is true that most youngsters don't lust after this 200mph hyperbike, some would much rather have a scooter or a chav'd up nissan micra, I don't know whats wrong with them. it only goes to show that the bird is for those that can seperate shite from quality, for those that want to rock, for those that truly understand the word 'motorcycle'. bl4hbl4h

I agree it ain't an old man's bike really CT, just yanking your chain. I am a mere young pup myself. But 200mph???

At 22 years old and riding solo why would you want an old man's bike?

Like Mark and Lorna we had one for two up mile munching comfort.

Lots of us here ride and have ridden our Birds hard and can throw them around, some have done trackdays and thoroughly enjoyed the experience but Birds are not sports bikes they are old men's sports tourers.

If you think that the bird is fast and handles well, try an R1 or a Blade or even an old SP1. I did 2 trackdays on the SP1 and frightened myself silly :)
Better doing it on the track than the road.

You would only say that if you haven't ridden anything else to judge it against.

The Bird is a good all rounder.

Still a bike for the more mature rider to downgrade to after his fill of sports bikes before retiring to a BM or a Pan.

So I needed something that would start in freezing conditions, and something that wouldn't rot through the winter, and something that has a comfy riding position for distance, as well as being fast and fun, and not cost an arm and a leg. And can cruise at 120 without the engine screaming.

If you can find a better bike to fit this criteria, then feel free to post it up here.

As I said, a good all rounder. It is also big, long and very heavy.
All big bikes (4 Cyl) have similar rev/speed relationships. No screaming!
If you are regularly cruising at 120 you'll soon exceed my 9 points :)
I did 7.5K miles in a year on the R1, no probs comfortwise.
Nick Sanders prefers his for RTW trips.

youngsters huh,,

I remember one youngster who had a bird,, Doc Savage he used to be on the forum & came to a few bashes,, trouble was he used to ride the bird like a sports bike, & forgot about the (by comparison) poor ground clearance,,I think Jon did the same at a riders skills day then had a fantastic time on Buzz (Alans) Blade without the same consequences.
Sorry to say but at 22 you really should have got a ZX10, R1, RSV, GSXR,the gone to a bird at a later age,, seems to me you are 26 now going on 46:-0)
BTW,, I do ride the bird hard at times even at my old years,,find it very hard to hold onto though with my brittle bones & arthritis,, so try and keep it just off the rev limiter:-0)bl4hbl4h:-0)

When I chose the 'Bird' it was because my wife had had enough of sitting on the back of my 600, I tried to get her to try the back of a 'Blade' but (funnily enough) she refused to even consider the idea.

The Blackbird was a compromise (the wife wanted me to get a Pan :eek: ) but with a few mods it has really grown on me and even after test riding a new Blade last weekend I don't think I'd part with it now.

I'm 40 now so I 'spose that makes me old (well, to a 26 year old it would) but I still feel like a 20 year old whenever I get out on my bike

There are sportier bikes out there, of course. But just because the bird is not the sportiest, does not mean it's for old farts only. It is, I believe, the best bike to have for anyone that rides all year round, and uses it as their main transport. It just feels more complete and solid than the other bikes I've ridden. More quality I suppose.

I've ridden the RGV250,GSX400,CB750 and YZF600 all good bikes, But now i'm on a Blackbird and its everything i want in a bike.
Don't like BM or Pan

When people are talking of 'old men', are they talking about people who benefit from years of experience to leave the kids floundering in their wake ? Don't worry kids, you'll get there.
