BARCELONA BECKONS LORENZO TO HOME CHALLENGE AS YOSHIKAWA JOINS TEAM
After two commanding wins in a row at Silverstone and Assen over the last two weekends, Jorge Lorenzo lands in his home city of Barcelona this weekend with a championship lead of 47 points and a plan to delight his Spanish fans with another win on home soil. He has flown the Fiat Yamaha flag alone for the last three races following Valentino Rossi's accident in Mugello, but this weekend he will be joined by Yamaha's experienced Japanese test rider, Wataru Yoshikawa. The two-time Japanese Superbike Champion will be riding Rossi's M1 while the Italian is out of action, backed by Rossi's usual crew who make a welcome return to the paddock this week.

Last year the Mallorcan-born Lorenzo lost out to his team-mate Valentino Rossi in a titanic last-lap battle, which Rossi named one of his best ever wins. With the Italian still out of action, Lorenzo is robbed of the chance to exact revenge on his team-mate but a second Spanish win of the season, following his victory in Jerez, would be sweet nonetheless for the 23-year-old and he will be going all out to stand on the podium once again

As one of the key test riders in Yamaha's MotoGP development programme, Yoshikawa is well acquainted with the M1-Bridgestone package. He has ridden as a wild card once previously in MotoGP, at the 2002 Motegi round, but this will be his first visit to the Montmel? circuit.

The Circuit de Catalunya features one of the longest main straights in the world, watched over by a vast grandstand, which is always full to bursting from Saturday morning. The rest of the track is characterised by long radius, medium and high-speed sweeping corners, with two tight left-hand hairpins thrown into the mix. This variation combined with regular changes in camber makes the circuit particularly demanding on chassis balance and means that front-end feel is a key concern for every rider.

Jorge Lorenzo "WE SHOULD ENJOY MONTMEL?!"

"Montmel? is a very special track for me, it is the closest to Mallorca and I can feel the people supporting me. Last year I lost at the final corner but now I will try to come back to the podium to celebrate with all my fans. We have a big gap in the standings and it give us confidence and allows us to be calm, but the team will be working at the same level, I am sure. We still have twelve more races, double what we've already had! We should enjoy Montmel? and then, after these three consecutives races, we have earned a little break - a week for a rest!"

Wataru Yoshikawa "HELPFUL FOR OUR DEVELOPMENT"

"I'm excited about riding the M1 in Spain this week, even if I'm very sorry for Valentino's injury. I have only ridden in a MotoGP race once, at Motegi in 2002, and this is the first time I have ridden at the Montmel? track. We can see from the team's results this season that Yamaha did a good job with the winter development of the M1 and I am sure that these few races I will contest now will be extremely helpful for the future development of our bike."

Wilco Zeelenberg "KEEPING FOCUSED"

"After six races we are leading the standings with a big gap so we can be very happy with the job we have done. Jorge has done very well to keep so focused through such a busy period of races and we just have one more before we can all enjoy a short rest. Barcelona is Jorge's home race and last year he lost there very closely to Valentino in an exciting finish. This week we will carry on in the same way, trying to keep focused and aiming for the podium once again."

Davido Brivio "GOOD TO COME BACK"

"This weekend our team will come back to the paddock after a strange time watching from home! We go to Barcelona where we have some amazing memories from last year. Of course we will miss Valentino but he is recovering well and now we will give our maximum support to Wataru as he joins our team. It will be nice to see the fourth M1 back on the track, Wataru is an experienced rider even though he doesn't know Barcelona and we will see what happens."

INTERWETTEN HONDA MotoGP TEAM: Gran Premi de Catalunya 2010

The seventh race of the season 2010 will take place the coming weekend in Montmel?, near Barcelona in Spain and it is the last of three successive races. Montmel? is located about half an hour from the Catalan Metropolis Barcelona and it is the home of Dorna Sports, the license holder and organisation for the MotoGP world championship. Usually the weather is extremely hot at the side of the Mediterranean Sea and riders and teams have to use the two practice days to find the best settings for the bike and to choose the right tyres for the Gran Premi de Catalunya.

Also this Grand Prix the Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team has to contest without their rider Hiroshi Aoyama. Aoyama injured himself during a crash in the Warm up for the British Grand Prix two weeks ago and he broke his T12 vertebra. He is currently recovering at home in Barcelona where the injury has to heal hopefully quickly. At the last Grand Prix in hollandaise Assen the 28 years old has been replaces by his compatriot Kousuke Akiyoshi, who is also the official Honda Test rider. The 35 years old will ride the Honda RC212V once again in Barcelona. The team is still looking for a substitute for Aoyama from Sachsenring on.

Kousuke Akiyoshi:

"Assen was a complete new track for me, but I liked it. Barcelona I know, I have been there before, but that was quite a while ago. I heard that also the test rider of Yamaha will take part in the race and I look forward to the battle with him. I hope I will win it."

Daniel M. Epp, Team Manager:

"Kousuke will, as he already did in Assen, ride Hiro's bike for us in Barcelona again. Also the Yamaha Test rider will be present there to substitute the injured Rossi and I am looking forward to the battle between the two test riders. Of course I hope Honda will win. For the races upon Sachsenring we are still looking for a replacement. We have a few options, but we are not decided yet. Until Hiro is back with us we need a stable solution.

The race weekend of the Gran Premi de Catalunya will start on 2nd of July with the first free practice of the 125cc class and finishes with the MotoGP race on 4th of July.

MOTOGP ARRIVES IN MONTMELO' FOR THE GRAND PRIX DE CATALUNYA

Sunday on the Catalunya circuit, there will the third consecutive race, the seventh of the 2010 MotoGP World Championship season. Championship that race after race is becoming always more and more competitive and that is projecting the Pramac Racing riders closer to the first eight riders of the league. On Assen circuit the 'green' riders of the Pramac Racing Team did not disfigured at all, finishing the race respectively in tenth place with the young Aleix Espargar? and in the eleventh place with Mika Kallio that thanks to a great start had remounted different positions. Now the focus shifts on the Grand Prix de Catalunya track. The circuit of Catalunya, is considered by many riders one of the most difficult tracks on which fast straights, are alternate to slow and driven sectors. The Sunday race will be the twentieth round of the top bike class that will be run on this track, which is situated just thirty kilometers from the center of Barcelona. This track will be the home race for the young Catalan Aleix Espargar? that has born in Granollers and who resides now just a few kilometers from the Montmel? circuit. In the past, Pramac Racing hasn't had great satisfaction on the Catalunya circuit, the absolute best result was the fourth place with Barros in 2005. Last year Mika Kallio has finish the race in the ninth position, this result has served to make a change in his first MotoGP season. The hope is that also for this year the Catalan Grand Prix will give a change to the so far difficult season for the Finn rider.

Paolo Campinoti - Team Principal Pramac Racing Team

"Assen result gives me good hope for the rest of the season although I am a bit disappointed, especially if I think how the things where going on Friday morning when Aleix had the seventh fastest time. I am still proud of the work done by all the Team that had allowed Aleix to finish the race for the fourth consecutive Grand Prix, in the top ten ranking. I'm partially happy also for Mika's result, he had fought with the other riders and had won positions, but however he is still far from the position that a riders with his talent can easily reach. On the Catalan circuit we had in the past some good success, we had finish fourth, just a steep from the podium in 2005 with Barros. Mika also had some success in the past on this track, he had got a pole in 2005 and then he had finish the race in third position during his last year of 125cc. Aleix has instead conquered here a fifteenth place as best result in his debut season in 125cc, but he knows very good the circuit that is situated just a few kilometers from his home. I think that thanks to the steady growth that has shown in the recent races and driven by the many fans who will follow him on this track, he will be protagonist of a great race and that he will gain a good result. "

Aleix Espargar? - Pramac Racing

"Also if I'm a rookie, we are keeping a good level for this part of the season. Except the first two races, where unfortunately I fall two times, I could have finished in the top ten in every race. Friday was fantastic, I had the seventh overall time, very close to the other riders. Saturday I was also very close to the fastest riders even if I get the tenth place on the starting grid. Unfortunately I had a bad start and I was soon far from the front riders. I look forward to race on Montmel? track that I consider my home track. Although I was not able to have good result on this track in the past in the four Championship races that I had run here, is not far from Granollers where I was born. I will give my best to conquest a relief placement, for my Team that has always worked hard for me and for my fans who will support me from the stands. "

Mika Kallio - Pramac Racing

"Assen result is not exciting, but I hope that the eleventh position that I had in the Dutch Grand Prix will serve to give a changing direction to my season. In the past I always had good results on the Catalan circuit and I hope to have in the next Sunday race. Last year I had finished the race in ninth position and in the test we had the day after the race, I had the fourth fastest time ever. This weekend we'll start from the data that we had obtained last year. It 's a beautiful track, with very fast sectors and other very driven, I should not have adapting problems to this track. Here I had some satisfaction in the past, in 2005 I won a pole position and third place in my last 125cc season. I'll give everything to conquer a good position that I'm missing from Jerez Grand Prix. "

Honda homecoming in Barcelona
The Catalunya Grand Prix is the most eagerly anticipated race of the year for some in the Honda camp who make their homes in the hotbed of Spanish road racing. In the premier MotoGP class, Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V) arrives second in the championship and looking forward to racing in front of family and friends at the circuit not far from his home in Sabadell. Pedrosa wasn?t able to showcase his talent last year, after an earlier crash in Mugello, and is looking forward to an on-form return to the track where he won in 2008. And Toni Elias (Gresini Racing Moto2, Moriwaki) hopes to add to his Moto2 championship-leading points tally, which he built on by finishing second in last weekend?s Dutch TT.

Pedrosa had little time to celebrate his fine second place finish in last week?s Dutch TT, a race in which he set the new circuit fastest lap. Assen was the second of three races on the trot and run only six days after Silverstone. With an extra day at home prior to the Catalunya race, Pedrosa will have more time to charge his batteries as he prepares to tackle a track where his circuit record lap from 2008 still stands.

It will also give his team a little more time analyse the work they did to transform his RC212V overnight from Friday to Saturday?s race in Holland. Having struggled in practice and qualifying, Pedrosa was elated and confident in Saturday morning warm-up after validating the progress his team had made. With that progress already in place, Pedrosa will have a leg up when he rolls out for practice on Friday afternoon at the Montmelo circuit.

The 24-year-old wasn?t at full fitness for the 2009 race, having crashed at Mugello two weeks earlier. But he?s in top shape now and eager to erase the memories of last year before a race day crowd which last year approached 90,000.

Team-mate Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V) always looks forward to his annual visit to Catalunya, as much for the atmosphere as the configuration. Catalunya is a long circuit with fast, flowing corners, one linked to the next, that suits his style. The proof is that he?s won the race and been on the podium numerous times. In 2008, his first year in the premier class, he finished one spot off the podium a performance he repeated last year. The Italian had arrived at the previous race in Assen full of confidence after finishing a season-best second in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. That runner-up finish kept alive a string of five races with Hondas on the podium, a string that Pedrosa extended in Assen.

Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda RC212V) finished sixth in Assen, his fourth such finish of the year. But that doesn?t tell the whole story. The Frenchman has run with the leaders at a number of races and was in podium contention more than once. More importantly, de Puniet has shown a newfound maturity by scoring points in every race, which has put him on pace for a best ever championship finish. The LCR Honda rider is the highest ranking non-factory rider one-third of the way through the 18-race calendar. De Puniet believes his strength is in fast corners, and the Catalunya circuit has several. His fondest memories of the venue are of his two 250cc wins and later running near the front early in his MotoGP career.

Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini) also has a number of fond memories of Catalunya. In addition to a victory in the 250cc class, the 27-year-old Italian has a pair of podium finishes from earlier in his MotoGP career, but a podium will be a tall order this weekend. Melandri separated his left shoulder in practice on the morning of qualifying at Assen. The decision to withdrawal came a day later, on Saturday morning, when Melandri knew he wouldn?t be able to ride the Honda RC212V at his usual brisk pace. He was examined by a specialist on the Monday following the race, who said that he needs to undergo further checks on the collarbone ligaments and confirmed that the bone in his shoulder has suffered a major trauma. Melandri will undergo more tests after the race, but he has been cleared to take part. Though he will have had an extra day between races, the shoulder is certain to be a bother and a podium finish will be difficult. Still, he?ll certainly be able to score points and continue to mentor his younger team-mate.

In the absence of Melandri, Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) was his team?s lone representative at Assen. Rear grip issues meant that the day didn?t produce the hoped-for results and he was thankful of his shot at redemption a week later. What he learned about his traction issues early in the race has been analysed by his team, which will send him out on Friday morning with a differently set up motorcycle. ?Super Sic? has twice been on the podium at Catalunya, finishing second on a 125 and winning on a 250 on a circuit he considers one of his favourites.

Kousuke Akiyoshi (Interwetten Honda MotoGP RC212V) will ride the second of his two races in place of the injured Hiroshi Aoyama, the Japanese rider who broke his back in practice for the British Grand Prix. The Honda test rider has made it clear his role is to continue to develop the Honda RC212V in race conditions, and Catalunya, where he has some experience, is the perfect venue. The team is currently searching for a more stable replacement for Akiyoshi and are talking with three different riders to substitute from the German Grand Prix at Sachsenring forward. The number one criteria is MotoGP experience, which at least two of the three riders have. With a weekend off between Catalunya and Sachsenring, they?re confident of reaching a solution.

Prior to this season, the Montmelo weekend has traditionally followed the race in Mugello, a course with similar characteristics. (This year the series visited Silverstone and Assen in between.) Each has a long front straight followed by a hard braking right hand first turn-harder braking in Catalunya-followed by technical sections of fast and slow corners, and elevation changes. The track has eight right-hand corners, many of which are long and fast, and five slower left-handers, which put different demands on the control Bridgestone tires. One of the most critical corners is the uphill right that leads on the middle straightaway. What sounds like a misfire is, in fact, the sophisticated electronics regulating spark to the engine as the 250bhp race bikes struggle to find grip for the drive down the chute and into the final sequence.

Montmelo?s dramatic end of lap plays out in front of a series of packed grandstands. The ?stadium? section is entered from the middle straight into a sharp left, followed by a less sharp left that flicks right into a hairpin that leads into the final two two right hand turns. The first sends riders rushing down to the final right onto the 1.047k straightaway, where top speeds reach nearly 322 kph. Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) won last year?s race with a dramatic pass of team-mate Jorge Lorenzo in the final corner, proving that nothing is decided until the very end.

Because the Catalunya circuit is also used for Formula One, the track surface is rippled in a number of corners, which puts a greater emphasis on suspension tuning to get the true benefit of the Honda RC212V both in acceleration and under braking.

MotoGP Rider Quotes:

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) says:
?I arrive at Catalunya GP in a very good mood. The last race in Assen was an excellent example of how we will never give up. The practice sessions were very difficult but our team never became downhearted and we were working until the final moments to get a good result. I?m happy with the race because I was able to maintain a high pace from the first lap to the last and I hope we can do that again in Catalunya. So far this season we have alternated between bad and good results at each race, but hopefully we can reach a high level again in Barcelona - everybody in my team is ready to go for it. It?s a circuit I always love to ride at because it?s very much my home race. My family and friends are there and, together with my fans, I feel more than anywhere else that I?m surrounded by supporters. I really want them to enjoy the weekend. Last year this race was very tough because I was injured and in pain, and I had to race with a pain-killing injection. This time we go to the Catalunya GP in good shape. We know that we will need to work very hard to set up the bike because at this circuit it is always difficult to find a good machine setting, and the one we used in Assen will probably not be right for this circuit. But I hope to get the bike sorted by Saturday, do a good qualifying practice and be prepared to fight at the maximum level in the race. So far when we?ve been at the front it?s been our hard work that has got us there, so we must continue pushing like this in Barcelona this weekend.?

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) says:
?I?m happy to be going to the Catalunya Grand Prix straight after the last race so that we can quickly turn page on the result in Assen and aim for a good result in Montmelo. This is one of my favourite circuits, it suits my riding style and I think it should be good also for the Honda RC212V machines. It?s a long track with fast corners and it?s a great feeling when you find the right flow and link one turn with the next. There is also a fantastic atmosphere at this track, and when you enter the final four corners it feels like a stadium and the sensation is incredible. I have always had good results here and I?m feeling really motivated. We have been strong so far this season and generally we have been improving race by race. We?ve finished on the podium quite a few times, and thanks to the work we put in over the winter we?ve been closer to front-running pace at most races. Still, we need to take another step forward so that we can compete for victory - that?s what we?ll try to do this weekend. I?m looking forward to the next challenge in Spain.?

Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) says:
?Barcelona is another fast race track with many fast corners. It is another track that suits my riding style and the way we have been working so far makes me confident to get another positive result. I won two races in 250cc class and got the front in 2007 with Kawasaki so I have got very good memories about this circuit. I do not want to dream about the podium because I need to stay focused on our job to take as many points as possible but I am pretty sure we can lap in the front once again as the overall package is quite good at the moment.?

Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini) says:
?I?m going to Barcelona with the clear objective of putting the disappointments of Silverstone and Assen behind me. I will obviously have to wait and see how I feel on the bike after such a big crash in Holland, but my determination to race again is huge. I have had a lot of treatment on the shoulder since Saturday and even though I still won?t be at peak physical fitness I am determined to get back out on track. I really want to build on the progress we made in practice at Assen, where we confirmed our recent progress with the set-up of the bike. I hope I am fit and able to continue the recent good work we?ve been doing so that we can have more to be pleased with by the end of the weekend.?

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini) says:

?The tyre problem at Assen definitely wasn?t what we wanted. It has halted my progress a little and denied me the opportunity to improve on my result from Silverstone, which is a shame. Anyway, I was happy to have at least finished the race in those conditions. I suppose it was one of those bad experiences that helps you to grow stronger. At Barcelona I want to pick up from where we left off in practice at Assen and put the Dutch TT behind me. I like this track a lot, I have won here in 250 and I?m sure I?ll feel comfortable. My feeling with the bike is improving and thanks to the team and Honda I am making constant progress, the gap to the front guys is getting smaller and I am more and more convinced that I am going to be fighting for top results soon.?

Kousuke Akiyoshi (Interwetten Honda MotoGP) says:
"Assen was a complete new track for me, but I liked it. Barcelona I know, I have been there before, but that was quite a while ago. I heard that also the test rider of Yamaha will take part in the race and I look forward to the battle with him. I hope I will win it.?

Lorenzo tops first practice whilst Yoshikawa gets to grips with the M1

Fresh from consecutive wins at the last two races, Jorge Lorenzo continued his blistering run of form today by topping the time sheets on day one at Montmel?, his home track. Wataru Yoshikawa joined him on the other side of the garage, the Japanese filling in for the injured Valentino Rossi.

In keeping with his recent trend, Lorenzo went to the top of the standings early on in the session and remained there throughout, completing 27 laps despite punishing temperatures in excess of 35 degrees. Despite the impressive lap times the Mallorcan, who lives just down the road in Barcelona, found he was lacking some rear grip on his M1 and he and his crew will concentrate on improving this tomorrow. He finished the day 0.153 seconds ahead of Casey Stoner.

Yoshikawa has completed many miles on the M1 during testing but he admitted that the bike he rode today was a little different to the winter development prototype. The 41-year-old from Tokyo has also had to learn the track, having never ridden here before, but he was happy with his first day of work in the factory team and is looking forward to making a step forward tomorrow after finishing 17th today.

Jorge Lorenzo - Position: 1stTime: 1'43.259Laps: 27
"This was a good practice and I was fast straight away again, although I did think that I would be able to improve my lap time a bit more during the session. Unfortunately the rear was sliding a lot which was partly to do with the heat, but we will try to improve this tomorrow. I love racing here, it's so close to my home and it's always extra special for me because all my family and friends come to watch. I hope I can give them a good show!"

Wataru Yoshikawa - Position: 1st Time: 1'48.015 Laps: 24
"I have already ridden many laps on the M1 but this bike of Valentino's feels quite different to the test bike and I need some more time to become used to it. Today was quite tough because in this heat the track was quite slippery, which didn't make it so easy for me to learn it, but I felt better by the end. We need to do some more laps and I will be ready to improve tomorrow."

Wilco Zeelenberg - Team Manager
"It was good to be fastest in these incredibly hot conditions, but we definitely have room for improvement because the bike didn't behave exactly how we wanted it to today. At the moment the problem is the rear sliding, so we need to look carefully at our setting and make some changes. Tomorrow we will compare Jorge's setting from last year to the one of today and see if we can make some small improvements."

Davide Brivio - Team Manager
"Today gave Wataru a chance to learn the track, which is new to him, and to give an initial indication of the bike setting to the team. It will be interesting now to see how much we can improve during the weekend, as he becomes more comfortable on the bike."

Fifth for fast learner Spies in sunny Spain

Ben Spies slipped seamlessly and impressively back into learner mode today, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider quickly mastering the challenging Catalunya circuit near Barcelona with a supremely composed display.

Temperatures soared to a physically demanding 37 degrees during the opening MotoGP practice session and Spies was able to produce a hot pace with a flying lap of 1.43.854.

That put the reigning World Superbike champion in fifth place on the timesheets as the 25-year-old made significant progress with improving corner entry performance on his YZR-M1 machine.

Methodically building up his speed on a track he'd never seen before, Spies was able to knock one second off his previous best lap time on his final quick lap to finish just 0.595s behind fastest rider Jorge Lorenzo.

Using the harder front and rear Bridgestone tyre options to cope with the extreme track temperature that hit 53 degrees, Spies was just 0.129s behind Andrea Dovizioso in fourth to once again finish top non-factory rider.

Fellow American Colin Edwards was also delighted with the progress he made with the turning performance of his Yamaha.

Weight distribution changes gave Edwards much more confidence on corner entry and he put the modifications to good use.

A best lap of 1.44.551 put him ninth with Edwards spending the entire session using the same hard compound Bridgestone rear tyre to gain crucial information in preparation for Sunday's 25-lap race.
Ben Spies - Position: 5thTime: 1'43.854Laps: 27
"The track is fun but the longer turns are pretty hard to learn. The last three turns are definitely a little bit different but I felt I was slowly getting to grips with it and I'm really surprised I ended so high up in fifth. I went out on one bike and just worked on learning the track and when I switched to the other bike I found the turning was a lot better. I fixed the twitchy feel I was having on the front and that was a positive. Then I put the hard front tyre on and it was a hundred times better for me and it ended up being a really good session. We changed the geometry in the front-end and got the bike turning even better. I didn't have to hold the front brake to help the bike turn. Now I can let off the brake, throw it into the corner and get it turned. It is obvious rear grip is vital here in the hot conditions and the key is going to be who can set the bike up for the end of the race when there's not much grip. I'm looking decent on speed right now but we've got to manage it and make sure I'm fast for the end of the race."
Colin Edwards - Position: 9th Time: 1'44.551Laps: 21
"I think I went about a tenth faster than my best time in last year's Friday session. It's the same rider, the same tyres, pretty much the same bike with a slightly different engine, so I can honestly say I'm trying my hardest and not getting any slower! I feel good and I'm definitely making some strides with the bike. We put some more weight on the front and got it turning a lot better. I feel a lot more comfortable and the bike is not running wide now when I get into the corner. It has been a nightmare with the turning this year but finally we've made big progress in that area. I went out on the hard rear tyre and I just stayed on that for the wh ole session. It is really hot out there and there wasn't a lot of grip and we'll need to make some changes overnight to the rear suspension because tyre management in those conditions is going to be crucial."

BEST FIRST SESSION FOR THE ROOKIE ESPARGARO' ON HIS HOME GRAN PRIX, SIXTH. KALLIO THIRTEENTH
A great heat wave has accompanied today's first practice of the Catalunya Grand Prix that will take place Sunday on the Montmel? circuit. The thermometer has exceeded the 37 degrees, 50 when considering the asphalt temperature. The riders of the Pramac Racing Team, Aleix Espargar? and Mika Kallio, has started well finishing in sixth and thirteenth respectively. In particular the Catalan rider has managed to improve lap after lap is bike set up concluding the session with three very fast laps. His gap from the first-placed Jorge Lorenzo is now less than a second. Mika has instead begun with a slower pace and on his last lap had stopped the chronometer half a second behind his teammate. Today was helpful for the Finn to study the track situation and to identify the best setup for the tomorrow qualifying with his engineers

Marco Rigamonti - Track Engineer Aleix Espargar?

"Seeing Aleix so close to the first riders increases the confidence we have in our resources and the feeling that we are working good. His good period seems to continue also on the Catalan circuit, the sixth position give us good feelings for Sunday's race. He is amazing in everything he does: he is always ready to learn, watching videos of old races or studying the trajectories on maps of the circuits that we give him. He also spends much time with us in the box to analyze the data and I think that these results are the fruit of the great effort that Aleix is putting in his work. Tomorrow, with these track conditions, we can make a very good qualification. "

Aleix Espargar? - Pramac Racing Team - 6th best time in 1'44 .136

"How nice is to be able to be so fast in front of your fans! We are improving race after race, even in the free sessions. At Silverstone I was eighth on Friday, seventh in Assen and sixth now. It 's my home circuit and I'll do my best to leave good memories of me to the people that will come here. This now is my best result since I am joining the MotoGP. Of course, the result of today is not very important, but I'd say that it's better to start in this way. Tomorrow it will be again a great battle but I will try to maintain the today's position."

Mika Kallio - Pramac Racing Team - 13th best time in 1'44 .745

"Despite the thirteenth position is not a good placement, I am confident for the rest of the weekend. We had worked on both bikes trying different solutions and tomorrow we will put together all the information we have obtained to set a competitive bike. I really want to have a good result here, last year I have finished the after test race in the fourth position and this is a proof that we can achieve a good placement here. It will be very important to conquest a good qualify position tomorrow, starting in the top ten is essential."

Bautista shows early promise at his home Grand Prix

Rizla Suzuki?s Alvaro Bautista started his home Grand Prix at Montmelo near Barcelona in promising style today before an unlucky crash hampered his preparations after only nine laps.

Bautista (P12, 1?44.692, 20 laps) started the hour session very confidently and was running in the top-three in the early stages. As he began his second run on the Suzuki GSV-R around the 4,727m Circuit de Catalunya, he suffered from a technical issue that caused him to run off the track at high-speed. As he entered the gravel trap he decided to lay the bike down rather than run on into the wall. Bautista sustained no further injuries and was able to continue with the rest of the session when he returned to the pits, but he did aggravate his shoulder injury and will seek further medical advice this evening.

Loris Capirossi and his crew made a major change to his GSV-R and they are sure this is the way to progress as he looks for the best set-up for his machine. Capirossi completed 23 laps and recorded a fastest time of 1?44.641. This was enough for a position just outside the top 10, but the gap between Capirossi and the riders in-front of him was much less than it has been in previous weeks and he is convinced he can close that further still over the weekend.

Today?s belting sunshine made temperatures soar to a sweltering 37?C, taking track temperatures up to a baking 53?C. Spain?s Jorge Lorenzo recorded the fastest time of the day.

Rizla Suzuki has one more practice session on Saturday morning, followed by qualifying in the afternoon. Sunday?s 25-lap race is round seven of the MotoGP World Championship, with the action getting underway at 14.00hrs local time (12.00hrs GMT).

?lvaro Bautista:

?It has been a bit of a disappointing day for me because, at the beginning I started with a lot of confidence and less pain in my arm - I was able to ride like I wanted to for the first time since my accident. The bike felt really good, I was able to control it well through the corners and the package felt much better. I had a nice rhythm going, but on my second run I had a problem in turn four and I wasn?t able to control the bike. I grabbed the clutch, but I ran wide and I had to crash in the gravel because the wall was coming towards me very quickly. After that it was difficult because the other bike had a setting totally different to the one I crashed on. We wanted to try two settings today, but the second one was like a different bike and it just didn?t give me the grip or braking that I wanted. At least we know that the good setting is the first bike I rode today so for tomorrow we will set up both bikes the same. I have to visit the clinic now because I feel a bit more pain after today?s crash and I hope that I will be ok for tomorrow.?

Loris Capirossi:

?Today we started with one bike similar to Assen, but we tried a completely different setting for weight distribution and I have to say that it is better for the front feeling, but still not enough. We are still struggling on some turns and we need to find something to make it work through those as well. We have some ideas, but we also need to work on the engine-brake and traction control to get them right for this circuit. Overall it is not as bad as Assen, but we still need to improve. We are closer to the guys in front of us now and we have to continue working in this way to get even closer.?

Paul Denning ? Team Manager:

?Our potential seems much better than last weekend, but it?s impossible to go from the back to being completely competitive in one step. The biggest disappointment of the session was ?lvaro?s crash ? which was no fault of his own. The potential he had shown to get into the mid 44s on his fifth lap indicates that there is quite a lot more to come when he is back on the bike with his favoured setting. Loris and his crew have also made some sweeping changes since Assen and when the setting is refined, there should be some light at the end of the tunnel for both sides of the garage here in Barcelona this weekend.?

STONER AND HAYDEN BEGIN SET-UP WORK IN SCORCHING SPANISH HEATWAVE

Ducati Marlboro Team riders Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden began with the difficult task of finding a set-up to cope with the sizzling Spanish summer at Barcelona today, as the Grand Prix of Catalunya got underway in 37?C ambient temperatures, with the track surface reaching 53?C.

Such conditions always take their toll on the riders, their bikes and in particular their tyres but both Stoner and Hayden made encouraging progress in the opening free practice. The Australian was happy to start out with a better base set-up than he has found in recent weeks, whilst the American struggled for edge grip in the first half of the session before making important steps forward in the final few minutes

CASEY STONER (Ducati Marlboro Team) 2nd (1?43.412)
?I?m very happy about today. We started off on the right foot and so far I?ve had no problems with my arm ? we just need to spend a little more time on the set-up of the bike but at this point of the weekend we have to be happy with it. It feels good and it?s easy to ride but we still have a long way to go before we start setting the lap times we think will be necessary. We have to work a little bit more with the rear set-up and the gearbox and I think if we can get better in those areas we?ll notice a big improvement overall. It is very hot here but the tyres are working well and our bike works in a different temperature range to the others, which could work to our advantage.?

NICKY HAYDEN (Ducati Marlboro Team) 8th (1?44.440)

?It wasn?t a great first session for us ? we struggled a lot for rear grip. On the edge of the tyre I had no traction and I was losing a lot of time. Towards the end we got it a little bit better but it was quite a tricky session to be honest. We were trying to manage one engine and put more miles on it whilst the other one felt a little better so that was tough. It?s not a great start for us but at least I feel like I?m not on the limit yet. There is a lot of room for improvement and we have a lot of work to do tomorrow because we?re 1.1 seconds off the pace and that is a lot.?

INTERWETTEN HONDA MotoGP TEAM - Akiyoshi also faster in qualifying
Kousuke Akiyoshi, the Honda test rider, who replaces the injured Hiroshi Aoyama at the Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team for Assen and now here in Barcelona, finished the qualifying for the Gran Premi de Catalunya today again in front of his test rider compatriot Wataru Yoshikawa, who is replacing the injured Valentino Rossi at the Fiat Yamaha Team. The target of Akiyoshi was to beat his colleague in every session and the 35 years old Japanese met the target so far. After the team changes some settings during today he is satisfied with the result and thinks that the changes went in the right direction and Akiyoshi is confident to hit his target again in tomorrow's race.

Kousuke Akiyoshi, 16 - 1'45.577:
"We tried three different set up in qualifying today and I had more grip straight away, maybe a bit too much. The lap times could have been a bit better and I am not so satisfied with that, but I think the direction we went today was right."

Daniel M. Epp, Team Manager:
"In Assen Kousuke was last. Now as his test rider colleague is in the game as well he has more motivation and finished also the qualifying in front of him. I hope it will continue like this also in the race."

Third consecutive front row for Randy De Puniet
Honda privateer Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda RC212V) was top of the order for 45 of the 60 minutes in Saturday?s sweltering qualifying session at the Circuit of Catalunya. But in the last ten minutes Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) sped to the pole position and Casey Stoner (Ducati) slotted into second. Still, it was three front row starts in a row for the Frenchman, the best stretch of his career, and it guaranteed a Honda would be on the front row of every grand prix this season.

The hyper-fit Frenchman seemed to thrive in the 35C heat, sliding the rear wheel of his Honda RC212V off the long corners of the 4.727k track north of Barcelona. De Puniet moved to the top in the sixth minute, then lowered the benchmark three more times. It wasn?t until the 51st minute that Lorenzo went slightly faster, with Stoner turning his fast lap less than four minutes from the end of the hour. And though de Puniet qualified third, he finished the session with more laps in the 1:42?s than anyone else, proving that his race pace will be strong for tomorrow?s seventh round of the MotoGP World Championship.

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V) qualified just off the front row, only .080s behind de Puniet, in his home race after a small mistake in the final section of the track. The Pedrosa family roots are in Sabadell, about 20k from the track, and the Spaniard had plenty of hometown support, including a number of family members. One of only two riders to win 125cc, 250cc, and MotoGP races in Catalunya, Pedrosa is hopeful of repeating his win here from 2008. Last season he arrived home in less than peak physical condition and wasn?t able to give his fans the race they were hoping for.

With similar temperatures expected for Sunday?s race, Pedrosa, and many others, spent the session evaluating which of the Bridgestone rear tires would work best for race distance.

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V) finished the session at the end of the second row in sixth place. The Italian spent much of the hour in the top three, by setting his fastest time on the 11th of his 30 total laps. But he wasn?t able to improve on his lap of 1m, 35.105s and found himself slowly slipping down the order. Still, starting from the second row puts him in perfect position to protect his third place in the MotoGP World Championship.

Dovizioso spent the end of the hour on the harder rear tire, while collecting data which he hopes will help him in the race. That he finished on the second row with the harder option bodes well for Sunday.

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) ended a string of four races in a row of improved qualifying spots, but not by much. The MotoGP rookie qualified ninth fastest, one off his career best, and only .129 secs. off the second row. He might have improved his position, but he ran out of time before he could fit a second softer rear tire. Simoncelli had the use of a new frame and forks today and, once he gets them dialed in, he?s confident he can race closer to the front.

Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) rode valiantly in considerable pain to the 14th fastest time. Melandri separated his shoulder during practice last week in Assen and wasn?t able to race. A week of intense physiotherapy has allowed him to ride, but his movement was limited and it was a feat just to finish the hour. The intense heat will do him no favors in Sunday?s race. Unable to battle for the win, Melandri will look to pick up as many points as possible.

Kousuke Akiyoshi (Interwetten Honda MotoGP RC212V) won the qualifying battle of the Japanese test riders. Akiyoshi, the Honda test rider racing in place of the injured Hiroshi Aoyama, got the better of fellow test rider, Wataru Yoshikawa (Yamaha), who replaced the injured Valentino Rossi. Akiyoshi?s target is to beat his colleague in every session and he was satisfied after having accomplished it today.

HONDA MotoGP RIDER QUOTES

Randy de Puniet, LCR Honda RC212V: 2nd ? 1m, 42.512s

?I was a bit worried about the track temperature and the edge-grip but from the beginning of this afternoon session on race trim I was one of the fastest out there. Then we could work on race set up playing around with different mappings and electronic and after that I moved on soft tyres lapping immediately in 42.6. I really wanted to get this pole position but Casey and Jorge have been very fast today. I am very satisfied about this third consecutive front row and want to thank my guys for their excellent work. Tomorrow for the race it?s a different story and we will have to see how the tyres will drop but we have been working on this since Friday so I am pretty confident. I think this could be the best race of the season for me.?

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda RC212V: 4th ? 1m, 42.592s
?The second row is not perfect but anyway, the position is not a big deal and to be fourth is ok with the lap times so close here. Today we've been trying the tyre options to check which will be the best ones for the race. It will be a tough race tomorrow because of the heat, and also because of the level of our rivals. Also managing the tyre performance so that we can lap consistently at 1m 43s will be critical. We need to work a little more on the chassis set-up because this morning I felt better than this afternoon. Anyway, we are better than we were at the last race in Assen in terms of qualifying performance, and we had a strong race there. I'd like to be on the front row and I think it was possible but on my penultimate lap I made a small mistake and this cost me the chance. T4 is still my weak point in the lap - the last hard braking point in particular. We will try to find something in the warm-up to fix this. Obviously I want to have a good race in front of all the people who will come to support me and we'll certainly be going for it.?

Andrea Dovizioso, Repsol Honda RC212V: 6th ? 1m, 42.866s
?I?m satisfied with the race pace and I think we are ready for tomorrow. The second row is not the best position to start but being on the front two rows is the important thing. Also, we were using the hard Bridgestone tyre at the end of the session so this qualifying position doesn?t truly reflect our potential. For the race there are many riders with a similar pace and we will have to see how the tyre performance goes tomorrow in these hot conditions and manage our race well. Today we started the session with the soft tyres to see how they affected the pace and rhythm and I think we will use the hard compound tomorrow because it?s really too hot for the soft ones. We need to adjust the electronic controls because the bike is sliding quite a lot - due to the characteristics of this track and also because of the heat. I?m looking forward to the race tomorrow. I really like this track and the atmosphere is always fantastic here.?

Marco Simoncelli, San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V: 9th ? 1m, 42.994s
?I am quite happy because I am convinced that this new chassis and forks are a step in the right direction. The third row is okay, although maybe we could have done better so we?ll try to improve our position in the race. I was struggling a little until we put the soft tyre on ? I was running well this morning in the cooler conditions but the temperature was much hotter in the afternoon and I couldn?t maintain that pace. I felt better as soon as we put the soft one on so it was a shame we ran out of time to try a second one because I think I could have taken another step forward. Now we have to decide which tyre to use tomorrow.?

Marco Melandri, San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V: 13th ? 1m, 43.621s
?Tomorrow will be a tough race considering how much I struggled yesterday compared to today. I was struggling for breath but I think this race for me is more like a training exercise and if I can stay on the bike for the whole distance it will give me a bit of confidence. The heat doesn?t help but once we get into a rhythm I think we can make it to the end.?

Kousuke Akiyoshi, Interwetten Honda MotoGP RC212V: 16th ? 1m, 45.577s
"We tried three different set up in qualifying today and I had more grip straight away, maybe a bit too much. The lap times could have been a bit better and I am not so satisfied with that, but I think the direction we went today was right."

Lorenzo charges to Catalan pole, Yoshikawa makes steady improvement

Jorge Lorenzo took an impressive third straight pole at his home track of Montmel? this afternoon, Fiat Yamaha's championship leader storming to his 12th MotoGP pole with an impressive lap that was 0.364 seconds faster than Casey Stoner in second. His temporary team-mate Wataru Yoshikawa made an impressive improvement of more than two seconds, as he continues to gain a deeper understanding of Valentino Rossi's YZR-M1.

23-year-old Lorenzo was fastest once again in morning practice but spent most of the qualifying session a little further down the standings, as he concentrated on perfecting his race set-up and gathering as much information as possible about the two available Bridgestone tyre compounds. With just under ten minutes to go he leapt up the leader board to take pole, surrendering it briefly to Stoner before improving again on both of his next two laps to ensure himself a hat-trick of pole positions from the last three races.

Having learnt the track yesterday, Yoshikawa was able to spend a little more time today working on the set-up of his M1, finishing 17th. He made a significant improvement and is hopeful of gathering some useful information and improving further still during tomorrow's race.

With more soaring temperatures today, tomorrow's 25-lap race looks like being a scorching affair when the lights go out at 1400 CET.

Jorge Lorenzo - Position: 1stTime: 1'42.046Laps: 29

"I'm really happy with this third pole position, it seems we're doing a very good job and it's very special to get it at my home round. It was a hard session but finally I was able to do some quick laps at the end with the soft tyre. It is so hot here and I think it's easy to say that tomorrow will be the hardest race so far this season. I will have to concentrate extra hard in this weather and also make sure that my physical condition is the best it can be. The tyres are going to be very important and we still have to make a final choice; before the practice we thought we had chosen but we're not so sure now so we will have to make our final decision tomorrow after warm-up."

Wataru Yoshikawa - Position: 17th Time: 1'45.759 Laps: 20
"I think I did a bit better on this second day here in Barcelona, and now that I understood the track more I was able to work on some small setting details and make some adjustments. I think that I can improve even more tomorrow, even though the race will be very hard. I will do my best to stay in touch and use the time to gather as much information as possible, which can help Yamaha in future development."

Wilco Zeelenberg - Team Manager
"It's our third pole in a row and we're really happy about this. Jorge was once again very mature today, not getting distracted with an early fight for times but concentrating on finding the best set-up and managing to improve his race-pace before putting in some fast laps at the end. We still need to decide about the tyres because at the moment our choice keeps changing, especially on the rear. They're both good but we will have to wait for tomorrow to make the final decision."

Davide Brivio - Team Manager

"Wataru improved his lap time a lot today. It's very difficult for him here; it's a new track, it's very hot and he's been away from racing for a long time, so he's not used to pushing hard in a short time. He has made a big effort and is getting quicker, so tomorrow we will see what happens. We know he will try his very best."

Spies and Edwards prepared for tough battle in Spanish sauna

Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team riders Ben Spies and Colin Edwards are gearing themselves up for potentially the hardest race of the 2010 MotoGP world championship campaign at the Catalunya circuit tomorrow.

Today's qualifying session at the 4.727km circuit near Barcelona took place in sweltering heat, with the American duo preparing to start from fifth and 11th on the grid for the 25-lap race.

Scorching hot conditions at the fast and technical circuit are likely to be repeated tomorrow, with Spies and Edwards putting in tremendous effort all weekend to get their YZR-M1 machines set-up to cope with the extreme weather.

Spies will start from fifth on the grid, the Texan disappointed he couldn't improve on his best time of 1.42.710 having encountered a slower rider while pushing hard on his last soft compound Bridgestone tyre.

The 25-year-old though remains confident of extending his outstanding form in his first full MotoGP season after completing an endurance run of 20-laps this afternoon.

The long run, five laps short of full race distance, gave Spies a wealth of information on Bridgestone's hard tyre in the extreme conditions often only experienced at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia.

Air tempera ture peaked at 35 degrees and track temperature a sizzling 53 degrees, but Spies was able to lap consistently in the low 1.43s bracket in full race trim.

He missed equalling his best premier class qualifying result of fourth by just 0.118s, but is confident he will be a strong contender for a third successive top four finish.

Edwards will start from the fourth row having set a best time of 1.43.059. Edwards called on all his vast experience to try and improve turning performance on his YZR-M1 machine while also fine-tuning suspension settings to gain maximum tyre endurance in the intense heat.

His hard work though was only rewarded with 11th, Edwards missing a top six grid position by less than 0.3s in another closely fought and exciting session.

Ben Spies - Position: 5th Time: 1'42.710 Laps: 30

"We did close to a full race simulation at the beginning just to see how it was, check how the bike is going to be in the heat and when the grip drops off. The first ten laps won't decide the race here and that's why I wanted to do the distance run. I was only going to do ten laps but I ended up staying out and doing 20 and we got some good information. I was pretty happy with the performance of the bike and physically I felt great. I tried to put in a couple of quick laps at the end on the soft tyre and I rode really hard to get myself up the grid. I'm pretty upset because Espargaro blocked me. He saw me coming and didn't even move and I was lucky because that was already on my third lap on the last soft tyre I had available. I had to do my fastest lap on the fourth lap on the tyre and I didn't think I'd get as high as fifth and was worried I'd be a lot further down. So considering that, I'm pretty happy with how it ended. It will be a tough race but I'll be giving it my all to continue the momentum I gained with good results at Silverstone and Assen."

Colin Edwards - Position: 11th Time: 1'43.059 Laps: 26

"Nobody wants to be down in 11th, least of all me, but I know I am riding better than ever and that is all I can do with the package we have got. It is really tough to go any faster than I am and it is not through a lack of trying on my part and my crew at Monster Yamaha Tech 3. Obviously it is unbelievably hot out there and we've spent a lot of time concentrating on getting the bike to work good at the end of the race when everybody is go ing to be chasing grip. If I race with the hard tyre I can probably be fighting for tenth and if I go with the soft tyre then at least I might be able to get in a good rhythm early on and see where we end up. But it is going to be tough and I'll sit down with my crew and Bridgestone tonight and see what they say about tyre choice for the race. I'll be giving it my all as usual but it is a little bit frustrating at the moment. I am so close to the top six on the times but I can't physically ride the bike any harder than I am to get those last couple of tenths I need to be higher up."

Rizla Suzuki shines in Catalan heatwave

Rizla Suzuki racers Loris Capirossi and Alvaro Bautista continued with the promise shown yesterday to produce the team?s best qualifying session of the season so far at Catalunya today.

Capirossi (P7, 1?42.903, 26 laps) and Bautista (P9, 1?43.025, 28 laps) were both less than a second from the pole position time set by Jorge Lorenzo and were within 0.5 of-a-second of a front row start. Capirossi worked tirelessly in the blistering Catalonian heat as he managed a total of 56 laps around the 4,727m circuit during today?s two sessions. He made very few alterations to his machine and is sure he will be able to race competitively in tomorrow?s 25-lap race.

Bautista went from strength to strength at his home Grand Prix today. He continually improved on his lap-times and with less than 10 minutes to go was in the top-four during the qualifying session. Showing no ill effects from yesterday?s crash, Bautista is confident that he will perform well in front of his home fans and give the Rizla Suzuki team a result to smile about tomorrow.

Today?s practice was held in scorching conditions again with the track temperatures rising to 53?C. Spaniard Lorenzo took his third successive pole position as he attempts to win his third race in a row and extend his championship lead.

Tomorrow?s race is the seventh round of the MotoGP World Championship and the main event will be set for the off at 14.00hrs local time (12.00hrs GMT).

Loris Capirossi:

?Overall the weekend has been not too bad and we have been working quite hard all day today. In this morning?s session we only stopped once in the hour and we managed to understand many things on the bike. We only changed one thing on the bike today and the team has done a great job to set the GSV-R up for here. I feel good with the weekend so far, but we are still missing a little something, especially in turns 9, 12 and 13. I am struggling a little bit in the fastest points, but it is enjoyable to ride the bike and I think that tomorrow we can have a good race.?

?lvaro Bautista:

?I am happy because I have improved on my time and I am lucky that my left arm is ok ? it?s not perfect, but at least I am able to ride the bike like I want to. This morning we improved the bike and I was happy with the set-up. This afternoon I tried to do a long run with the front tyre, but something wasn?t right with the feeling so I had to change it and that resolved things. I tried to follow Lorenzo and I got a couple of good laps, this put me in fourth position for a while ? which was good because it was the best I have been in MotoGP. At the finish of the session I made a mistake on my last lap and lost some time, if I hadn?t I might have been higher up the grid. I am happy though because this is my best qualifying position and now I want to make a good start tomorrow so I can fight with other riders for the front positions. I really want to have a good race here at my home Grand Prix.?

Paul Denning ? Team Manager:

?Congratulations to all the team - and both riders - on a fine effort so far this weekend in Catalunya. It is particularly pleasing to see ?lvaro back and showing the kind of form that we know he is capable of. For both of the guys to be less than a second off pole ? and half-of-a-second off the front row ? is a massive step from where we have been recently. It?s going to be very difficult for all the bikes and riders in this heat tomorrow, but Loris and ?lvaro are up for the challenge and whilst we?re very realistic about the steps we?ve taken and the expectations for tomorrow, we all feel positive that the guys have the capability to put on a good show.?

FOURTH ROW FOR ESPARGARO' IN BARCELLONA, FIFTH FOR KALLIO
Another hot day in Barcelona where the qualification valid for the MotoGP Grand Prix of Catalunya was held. The Pramac Racing Team riders, Aleix Espargar? and Mika Kallio, have respectively concluded in twelfth and fifteenth positions and therefore start the race from the fourth and fifth row. The home rider, Aleix, has recorded very interesting lap times since this morning free practice when he had finished the second free practice in fifth position. In the afternoon he tried until the last lap to conquer the same position, but due the traffic he found in the last laps he had to settle for the twelfth position. In his last lap he also had to cut the first chicane always because of the traffic found on track. Mika has instead found some difficulties and tomorrow during the race that will begin at 2 pm he will have to make a great comeback.

Marco Rigamonti - Track Engineer Aleix Espargar?

"Aleix was not lucky today. On his home track, he was determined to obtain a good result, but he had found during his last exit a lot of traffic and failed to gain the position he deserved. He was very angry when he reached the box. He will have to transform this anger into positive aggressiveness for tomorrow's race. Too bad, but he will still have other occasions to improve in qualifying soon. Anyway, tomorrow will be the day that really counts: if he will have a good start I'm sure that he will give us a great result."

Aleix Espargar? - Pramac Racing Team - 12th fastest time in 1'42 .931

"I am disappointed on how the qualifications have gone today. After the result achieved this morning I was expecting a lot more, but it's ok for now. In the last laps I found a lot of traffic and this has made me a little nervous. Some riders have risked to make me fall, but these are the races and it can happen. The most important thing for tomorrow is to start well: the bike is ready and I am as well."

Mika Kallio - Pramac Racing Team - 15th best time in 1'43 .685

"Things have improved in the afternoon compared to the second practice session, but the final result does not make me happy. Things must change very soon. The Team is working very good and they do not deserve these results. With today's heat the bike was sliding a lot in the rear and for this reason we will try a couple of changes in tomorrow's warm up."

STONER ON FRONT ROW AT MONTMEL?, HAYDEN ELEVENTH

Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden qualified second and eleventh respectively for the Grand Prix of Catalunya on another sizzling day in Barcelona, where track temperatures reached 60?C. The grueling conditions put the Ducati Marlboro Team riders to the test and they both struggled to find the required grip levels on race tyres as they experimented with a variety of settings in the first part of the session.

In the final few minutes, when they fitted the softer tyres, they both lowered their lap times with Stoner rising to second place and Hayden eleventh but just two tenths off seventh.

CASEY STONER (Ducati Marlboro Team) 2nd (1?42.410)
"This afternoon?s qualifying practice was the only session we have really struggled in this weekend because everything went well in free practice. We struggled to improve the rear grip and so far we haven?t found enough of it. We are fast in the corners and especially on entry but we can?t get the tyre to work properly on exit ? we don?t have grip and it is sliding around. We tried something with the set-up on one of the bikes but I didn?t like it so we went back a step. We?ll try a couple of new things in the warm-up but other than that I?m satisfied with what we have for the race."

NICKY HAYDEN ? (Ducati Marlboro Team) 11th (1?43.068)

"We have made a few steps forward this morning in the cooler conditions but in the afternoon we really struggled. We?re having the same problems as yesterday - to get the grip we need we have to load the rear too much and vice versa. We tried some little changes with the spring and a few other things without finding a good balance and at the moment it?s going to be a demanding race. Starting from the fourth row doesn?t help ? we have a lot of work to do but hopefully we can find something in the warm-up.?

INTERWETTEN HONDA MotoGP TEAM - Akiyoshi says Good Bye with 3 points
Kousuke Akiyoshi, the Honda test rider, who replaced the injured Hiroshi Aoyama in Assen and Barcelona, said Good Bye to the Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team today at the Grand Premi de Catalunya and thanked them with three more points as he achieved the 13th place. Akiyoshi only stepped in at the last two Grand Prix to fill Aoyama?s empty place and gives over to the youngster from San Marino, Alex de Angelis, who will start riding the Honda RC212V from Sachsenring on.

Akiyoshi said that the race today was not easy for him, because as a test rider he is used to a different level of riding. Now the 35 years old Japanese is flying back home and takes the experience he gained in the premier class of motorcycle racing with him.

Kousuke Akiyoshi, 13 - 44'09.348:

"The race today was a big thing for me and it was quite difficult as well. I am a test rider and I work in a different way than the MotoGP riders. But the experience was a lot of fun for me. I would like to come back one day."

Daniel Epp, Team Manager:

"Kousuke increased his performance a lot in Barcelona. In the last third of the race he had a similar pace as Kallio and Edwards and it was very important that he won the battle against his compatriot and working colleague Yoshikawa, who was riding the factory Yamaha this weekend. These were two interesting races in which Akiyoshi tested the bike. Now I look forward to work with Alex de Angelis."

Pedrosa second in race and championship
Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V) solidified his hold on second in the MotoGP World Championship with a fine second place in his home grand prix before a crowd of 81,426 on a sweltering afternoon at the Circuit of Catalunya. The race was won by Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha), with Casey Stoner (Ducati) third, the trio completing an identical podium to last week?s Dutch TT.

Pedrosa, racing in front of friends and family from his nearby hometown of Sabadell, got the jump on the 17-rider field as they sped down the kilometer-long front straight. But a front end shake on the run to turn one had knocked his brake pads back and he arrived at the highest speed point on the track with no brakes. Pedrosa made the split second decision to ride onto the tarmac run-off. He rejoined the field in ninth place.

From there it was a fight to the front, with Pedrosa gaining spots quickly. He was fifth by the second lap, third by the sixth and into second on lap 16.

His elevation into second came at the expense of teammate Andrea Dovizioso. Dovizioso had gotten away with Lorenzo and matched him corner for corner, even taking the lead on the fourth lap. Then Lorenzo took advantage of a mistake by Dovizioso to reclaim the lead and controlled the pace.

The Italian was riding hard to keep pace with Lorenzo. From the start of the race his rear brake wasn?t working properly, which made it difficult to settle the rear of the machine for corner entry. He was able to be fast, but there was added pressure on the front and he was always on the limit. The aggressive riding finally caught up with him. Dovizioso was within half a second of Lorenzo when he lost the front end and crashed entering turn 10, the entrance to the stadium. He remounted and rode dust-covered to 14th, and two valuable championship points.

Once in second Pedrosa was under pressure from Stoner, but remained steadfast and took his fourth podium of the season. It was also his second in a row, which he believes shows that he?s able to demonstrate the consistency needed to remain in the championship fight.

He now has 113 championship points to 165 for Lorenzo after seven of 18 races. Dovizioso sits third with 91.

Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) came into the race better prepared than ever. He had the advantage of a new chassis and forks, supplied by Honda in recognition of his recent results, which he put to good use by qualifying third fastest.

For the race de Puniet took a gamble on his rear tire. On a day of 49C track temperatures, the Frenchman was the only Honda rider, and one of only four riders in the 17-rider field, to opt for the harder Bridgestone rear. De Puniet was hoping it would give him an advantage over the second half of the race, but it wasn?t so. Instead he moved into a solitary fourth on the 15th lap and rode it home.

Still, the result was his best of the season and moved de Puniet into a tie for fourth in the championship with Nicky Hayden (Ducati), and sole honors as top non-factory rider.

Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini) rode valiantly to finish just behind Hayden in ninth place. Melandri was riding just over a week after separating his left shoulder at Assen and in considerable pain. Braking was difficult and by the end of the race he was relying heavily on the right side of his body. He held Hayden off until the three laps from the end. Even when he was in ninth, Melandri never gave up and missed out on eighth by just over .1s.

Kousuke Akiyoshi finished his second and final ride on the Interwetten Honda MotoGP RC212V by scoring three championship points, his most ever. The 35-year-old Honda test rider, who was riding in place of the injured Hiroshi Aoyama, came out on top of a friendly battle with fellow test rider Wataru Yoshikawa, 41, of Yamaha. Akiyoshi learned a great deal about racing at the grand prix level and will put it to good use as he returns to his job as a test rider in Japan.

Akiyoshi will be replaced at the next grand prix in Germany in two weeks? time by Alex de Angelis, the former MotoGP rider who?s racing for RSM Team Scot in Moto2 this season. The team has said the San Marinese remain on the bike until Aoyama is fit to return. No date has been set. When Aoyama does return, de Angelis will return to his Moto2 duties with RSM Team Scot.

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) was on pace for a career best result when his day came to a premature end. Like de Puniet, Simoncelli had the use of a revised chassis and forks in Spain. The tall, lanky Italian used them to good effect by finishing the first lap in fifth, then slotting into a secure sixth on lap two. He was pushing de Puniet when he let off the brakes too early and the front end washed away on the 14th lap. And, despite his first race crash of the season, the MotoGP rookie came away encouraged with his form and the progress the team has made.

Now, after three consecutive races, the paddock can take a breather before reconvening at the Sachsenring for the German Grand Prix on the weekend of July 16-18.

HONDA MotoGP RIDER QUOTES

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V): 2nd

?I made a really good start and was leading towards turn one. I had a bit of a front end shake on the way to the first corner but I didn?t think anything of it until I hit the brakes and? for a moment there was nothing. I was surprised because it was not such a bit shake, but anyway I pumped a few times and it came back, but by then it was too late and I had to run wide. I took it slowly to get back on track because I didn?t want to be to be penalised [for cutting the corner]. And then I tried to recover as quickly as possible and make up the positions I?d lost. I got past Casey when he made a mistake and we raced together for many laps. I was pushing as hard as possible but we had a bit of a front end issue through the race and the front end was closing in the corners - I think many riders were having this problem today though. I was able to hang on until the end of the race though and I?m happy enough with second place after that first lap. We?ve linked two good results together which was our target and now we must maintain this consistence and fight for the win at the next races.?

Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda RC212V): 4th
?We have decided to go with the harder tyre and I struggled a bit with rear edge-grip in the beginning. I took a bad start from the front row but immediately push to catch the three riders in the front and after that my race pace was exactly what we were expecting. So I took the fourth position and decided to keep my rhythm till the end, as I could easily control the gap to the other riders. Simoncelli tried to catch me but he made a mistake and crashed out. I knew I could get my best result of the season here and this fourth place is simply fantastic for me and the guys. We now hold fifth place in the world classification as best private team and we keep on working in this direction to place our Honda in the front at every GP of the season.?

Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V): 9th
?That was a tough race ? really tough. The temperature was incredible but the heat was the least of my worries and I was struggling most of all with my condition under braking. I could hardly get the bike stopped in the first corner, but my pace was good and I was hopeful of following Spies and Capirossi to the end. Unfortunately, I made a couple of mistakes and I started to feel more and more pain. I was practically riding using only the right side of my body and when the front started to lose grip it was hard for me to hold on. I made one last attempt to pass Hayden at the end but I couldn?t hold it on the brakes so it was impossible. ?

Kousuke Akiyoshi (Interwetten Honda MotoGP RC212V): 15th

?The race today was a big thing for me and it was quite difficult as well. I am a test rider and I work in a different way than the MotoGP riders. But the experience was a lot of fun for me. I would like to come back one day."

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V): 14th

?Today we had a really good race pace and we could have fought with Lorenzo for the win at the end of the race. Unfortunately though, from lap one my rear brake was not really working properly in the last part of the corner entry and this gave me some problems entering corners and mid-corner. I was still able to be fast, but this issue put more weight on the front, it was very difficult to control - I was always at the limit. Then at turn nine of 15th lap I went a little bit over the limit and crashed. It?s a pity but I have to take the positives from today - and fighting at the front of the race is where we want to be and we achieved that for a time today. Anyway, I?m happy with my performance, and I?m sorry for the team because we are all working hard. Next time we?ll aim to be back up front again.?

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V): DNF

?I was on course for the result we had hoped for and thought we were capable of. I knew if I could be consistent I could be up near the front and in fact I was setting low 1?44s. I was catching De Puniet but then I let off the brakes a little too early as I entered the corner and the front folded. What a shame! Today we were capable of finishing fourth and that would have given us a massive boost. We have made progress but it would be nice to just have that extra injection of morale. Now we are even more sure that we have taken big steps forward over the past three races but mistakes can happen. It is my first race crash but we didn?t want it! ?

Bautista races to a fantastic fifth at his home Grand Prix

Rizla Suzuki, ?lvaro Bautista and Loris Capirossi all recorded their best race finishes of the season so far at the Catalunya Grand Prix in Spain today.

Bautista scored a career best MotoGP result of fifth, as he controlled his race from start to finish, before bringing his Suzuki GSV-R home for the team?s best result of the season. He got a good start from ninth on the grid and was up into sixth place at the end of lap one. Bautista benefitted from Andrea Dovizioso and Marco Simoncelli crashing out when they were in front of the Rizla Suzuki man, but he then never looked like giving up his fifth position, even as he came under pressure from Ben Spies on the final lap. This was a strong end to a very promising weekend for the Spaniard in front of his home fans ? many of whom were sporting the colours of his own fan club.

Capirossi crossed the line just behind his team-mate as he finished the race in seventh place. He was relegated to 10th position early on, but battled back to make a number of passes before deteriorating rear grip became an issue and a safe finish was better than going for glory and risking a crash. Capirossi was pleased with the weekend and is certain that this is the step forward that the team has been looking for. His seventh position, allied with Bautista?s fifth, also gave Rizla Suzuki its best result at a MotoGP event so far in 2010.

Today?s? race was held in very warm conditions and 81,426 fans witnessed another home star take victory as Jorge Lorenzo won his third consecutive Grand Prix to strengthen his lead at the top of the championship.

Rizla Suzuki now has a weekend off, after the busy three-week back-to-back races, before it heads to Sachsenring in Germany for the next round of the season on Sunday 18th July.

?lvaro Bautista:

?I am very happy because this fifth position is like winning the race after the last few races we?ve had. We really needed this result, for me, for my team and especially for Suzuki. I was very strong all weekend and was confident that I could do a good race here. I was very concentrated at the start because I knew if I could start well I could stay with the group in front. I did that, but I did have a bit of a problem in the race with the hard-braking places because I didn?t feel that the bike was entering the corners like in the practice. I got a good rhythm in the race and tried to control what was going on behind me and go for a good result. In the last laps I saw that Spies was coming very fast and I tried to push a bit more, but the rear tyre was used up and I couldn?t do any more, so I rode tight for the last lap to make sure I got fifth position. I want to say thank-you to all my team, to Suzuki and the sponsors Rizla and especially everybody that is here to support me, all my fans and family.?

Loris Capirossi:

?I want to say well done to the whole team because this is the first real result of the whole year. For sure we did a good job all weekend, but we made a mistake with the tyre for the race. All the information we had said that it was impossible to use the softer tyre for the race and we used our ones in practice because we didn?t think we?d need them for this afternoon, but in the end I was the only rider with a harder tyre in the warm-up and I had a bit of a problem with grip and then in the race I was one of the only ones with the harder compound and I struggled a lot with feeling at the start. It worked well in the middle of the race, but the performance dropped for the last four laps and I struggled to keep a good rhythm. This is the first time this year I have felt that the bike has been right and this for us is a really important thing.?

Paul Denning ? Team Manager:

?I am so pleased for ?lvaro here today, because to see him come back from his injury ? and the problems it?s caused him in the last few weeks ? to such a high level, is a fantastic achievement. He thoroughly deserved his top-five finish. Loris also looked strong ? especially in the middle of the race ? and only lost out to Ben in the final laps when a finish rather than a crash - as his rear grip dropped away significantly - was the right decision. The team prepared well for the race today, but most importantly the riders have some belief back in the bike and in their ability to push hard. From a riding performance and a bike setting point of view, hopefully this is the start of our season.?

UNLCUKY RACE FOR THE PRAMAC RACING TEAM IN CATALUNYA. KALLIO TWELFTH, ESPARGARO' RETIRED
A really unlucky Grand Prix of Catalu?a for the Pramac Racing Team. Aleix Espargar? has slipped during the fifth lap, when he was in eleventh position and while, thanks to a good rhythm, was reducing the gap from the riders in front of him. Good start for Mika Kallio who started from fifteenth position made it to conclude the first lap conquering two positions. The Finn rider was able to ride well for a couple of laps but he had to give up to other riders who had a better rhythm compared to him. He concluded the race in twelfth position and therefore gained four world championship points. Next appointment is in fifteen days at the Sachsenring, where the "green" riders will have the opportunity to revenge today's opaque performance.

Fabiano Sterlacchini - Pramac Racing Technical Director

"Probably one of the worst race of the season for us. Aleix was really competitive during every session, but today he slipped twice, once in the warm up and once in the race, and this has compromised his home weekend. It's a pity because Aleix deserved to conquer a good result for the good work he was doing. For what it concern Mika, instead, we didn't make it to find the right way to follow and today's race is the proof of it. Almost a minute of distance from the first rider is really too much. From Sachsenring, which is one of his favorite track, we will have to change a lot."

Mika Kallio - Pilota Pramac Racing Team - 12th in the race - 16th of the World Championship

"What to say, I couldn't go any way faster and I couldn't conquer any more positions. I was riding at least one second slower at every lap compare to the riders in front of me. I made a very good start and this has allowed me to gain some position in the first lap. It has been a difficult weekend for me and for my Team that has worked hard to give me the best bike possible. We will have to make up for this result in the next Grand Prix in Germany."

Aleix Espargar? - Pilota Pramac Raing Team - DNF - 13th of the World Championship

"I'm very sad. After the positive results I have done in the last Gran Prix, I was hoping to have a good result also on this track. This morning I had a great lap time during the warm up and I was having good hopes for the today's race. I was also able to have a very good start, something that has not happened in previous races. This morning during the warm up I had some problems with the front, problems that have recurred also in the race. During the first lap I have overtake Hayden, then its trajectory at the end of the braking line was a bit large and I went off the track to try to not hit him. Thanks to the security street I didn't fall and I had to cut the first curve so that I have regaining my position. During the fifth lap I was pushing hard to reduce the gap that Capirossi had ahead of me. Unfortunately, in a corner my bike had closed the steering wheel while I was braking and the bike slipped on the asphalt. I tried to get back in the race but unfortunately my bike was off. I am very sorry for not being able to finish the race in front of my fans, but I am aware of the growth that we were able to do in the recent races. We must always continue to improve our results."

Lorenzo scores a hat-trick with emphatic home win

Jorge Lorenzo took an emphatic home win in front of a passionate Catalan crowd at Montmel? this afternoon, his fifth victory of the season and third in a row. This means that Yamaha now has more wins than any other manufacturer in the four-stroke MotoGP era, with 57. Wataru Yoshikawa, standing in for the injured Valentino Rossi, put in a brave performance to finish 15th in extremely hot conditions, taking a championship point in the process.

Starting from pole, also for the third consecutive race, Lorenzo lost ground to Dani Pedrosa into turn one but his fellow Spaniard then ran wide, leaving the Fiat Yamaha man in the lead. The next few laps saw Lorenzo at the head of a tight trio, as Andrea Dovizioso and Casey Stoner pushed hard to stay with him. Early on lap four the Italian Dovizioso briefly got his nose in front but Lorenzo soon got back by him to lead once again the next time around. On lap six the trio became a twosome when Stoner ran off track, but it looked like Lorenzo might have a battle on his hands as Dovizioso showed no signs of letting him get away. With ten laps to go however Dovizioso crashed out, leaving Lorenzo nearly six seconds clear of Pedrosa in second. From then on it was just a case of keeping his head as the tyres started to slide more and more in the extreme heat, but the 23-year-old is a cool customer these days and he eventually flew over the line 4.754 seconds ahead of Pedrosa, with Stoner third. Lorenzo has taken a hat-trick of wins once before in his career, in his 250cc days, and is the first Yamaha rider to take three wins from three poles since Eddie Lawson in 1986.

Having not raced competitively since 2002, Yamaha test rider Yoshikawa was faced with a near impossible task this weekend in the testing conditions at a track he had never seen before. The 41-year-old fought on to the finish however, gathering important information for the M1's future development in the process, and was rewarded with a championship point for his efforts.

Lorenzo now has an impressive 52-point lead in the standings ahead of Pedrosa, whilst Rossi drops to seventh after missing four races. Following three punishing weeks on the road, the MotoGP paddock now has a ten-day rest before it reconvenes at the Sachsenring in Germany for round eight.

Jorge Lorenzo - Position: 1stTime: 43'22.805
"This is very special. After losing so closely last year I was happy but not completely so and today I can say I am completely happy, winning here at my home race. It was very difficult today because it was so hot and the front tyre was sliding a lot. I thought I was going to have a big battle with Dovizioso because he was pushing very hard but then he crashed and I was alone; it was lucky for me because then I was able to take it more gently to the finish. I think I rode a clever race today. I am so grateful to my team and to everyone at Yamaha and Bridgestone because they are working so hard to make our bike competitive at every track. I also want to say thank you to all the fans that came to watch today, it is a great feeling for me to win here in front of them all."

Wataru Yoshikawa - Position: 15 Time: +1'35.237
"It was really hard to ride in the heat plus after eight years without racing 25 laps is a lot, but I am really happy to finish and to win one point. I hope that this experience will help me at Sachsenring and in my future work. I have really enjoyed working with the best team in the paddock; they were quick and professional at the same time as being relaxed and friendly and the atmosphere in the garage was great. I am glad that I have had the chance to work with them."

Wilco Zeelenberg - Team Manager
"What can we say? Five races won out of seven, three in a row...it's amazing. I was a little bit worried about this one because it's Barcelona, Jorge's home track and there was maybe a little bit more pressure for him, I think he was even a little bit nervous! But finally we decided to use the same tyre as the others and just go for it. He was under pressure from Dovizioso plus Moto2 had changed the grip conditions quite a lot so the race pace was quite a lot slower, but he was clever and smart, stayed on two wheels and won the race. Well done to him and to our whole team."

Davide Brivio - Team Manager

"We are really happy that Wataru was able to finish and he really deserved this championship point. He did very well this weekend in an extremely difficult situation; it was very hot, he's been away from racing a long time and he didn't know the track so I think he can be happy with what he has achieved."

Top six for Spies in scorching hot Spain

Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider Ben Spies maintained his excellent recent form in today's Catalunya MotoGP race, the Texan producing a strong late attack to claim his third successive top six finish.

Starting from fifth on the grid, Spies found it difficult to find a consistent and fast pace in the opening half of the 25-lap encounter and he dropped down to 10th.

Adapting his style to cope with the lack of grip as track temperatures soared to 49 degrees, Spies was able to up his pace dramatically in the final ten laps.

He passed Marco Melandri on lap 18 for seventh position after Italian duo Andrea Dovizioso and Marco Simoncelli had crashed out of the top six.

Showing his supreme strength once again on worn tyres, Spies was able to lap consistently in the 1.44 bracket and he quickly closed down on Loris Capirossi for sixth.

He swept by the Suzuki rider on lap 23 and then embarked on a hot pursuit of home favourite Alvaro Bautista. But despite a gallant effort to catch the Spaniard, Spies just missed out on fifth by under 0.2s.

Fellow Texan Colin Edwards maintained his record of scoring points in every race so far in 2010. But 11th was little reward for the American's gritty performance.

A sluggish start cost Edwards five places on the opening lap but he fought back superbly and claimed 11th from compatriot Nicky Hayden on lap nine. But just as he prepared to shadow team-mate Spies he ran into front-end grip issues and eventually had to settle for 11th position.

Ben Spies - Position: 6thTime:
"I got an okay start but got shuffled around in the first couple of corners but I'm not really happy with today. We didn't have the grip that the other guys have in the first ten laps and that lost me some places. When everybody had a big drop with their tyre performance and they were sliding and moving around, they were in the same boat as me and I could go through the field. For the last ten laps I was probably the fourth quickest guy on track. But coming from where I was it was the best result I could get. I rode as hard as I could and did everything I could. I made a couple of small mistakes and definitely should have been fifth. I'd have caught Bautista in time to pass him but I took too long to get around Loris. I'm not really satisfied with sixth because a couple of guys crashed out in front of me and that helped make us look a bit better."

Colin Edwards - Position: 11th Time:
"That was a tough race. I had big problems all weekend and I tried a completely different set-up this morning. I put some more weight on the front and it seemed to work this morning when the temperature was a bit cooler. At the start of the race it felt good, even though I got an awful start. But I started pushing really hard and was able to get ahead of Nicky but immediately I started having a lot of trouble on the right side of the front tyre. After that it wasn't a whole lot of fun because I couldn't ride the bike how I wanted and kept running wide. I tried carrying less lean angle but nothing I could do was going to help me go any faster. I was riding as hard as I could and finished but 11th is not where I expect to be or where the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team expects to be."

Herve Poncharal - Team Manager

"We are a little bit disappointed with the race today because it was clear that in the final laps that Ben was very strong as always. He did a race simulation yesterday and was really fast, so we felt quite confident. But he was unable to repeat that performance and had an issue in the first ten laps where he couldn't push at the pace he wanted. But he came back really strong and unfortunately it was just too late to finish fifth. But I'd say in the last ten laps he was easily the fourth fastest rider on track and with a better first half to the race, I think fourth was a possibility. But another top six keeps the momentum going for Ben and he's only ten-points off fourth place in the championship. Colin was the opposite and he had a very strong first ten laps but he was unable to keep his pace. As usual though he never gave up and continued to push and it was a shame because he deserved much better. It has been a hectic period in whi ch the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 has done well in MotoGP, so we hope for a good rest ahead of the Sachsenring and then a big race for Ben and Colin at Laguna Seca."
