Yamaha Prepare for Battle in Barcelona
Yamaha Factory Racing heads to Spain this week for the second home race of the year for reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo, the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya at the Circuit de Catalunya, Montmel? on Sunday 16th June. The circuit promises to deliver an exciting weekend of racing as the scene of one of the greatest battles between Lorenzo and his teammate Valentino Rossi in 2009 when the Yamaha riders took it to the wire over the last laps in a fight for glory, won at the last corner by Rossi.

Fresh from his superb victory in Mugello, Lorenzo will be eager to repeat the performance in front of his home crowd and continue his unbroken four-year podium run at Montmel?. The Mallorcan was second in 2009 and 2011 and claims two premier class victories there, 2010 and 2012. Lorenzo also has one 250cc win at the track in 2007.

After a disastrous home race in Mugello that saw him crash out on the first lap after a collision with Alvaro Bautista, Rossi will be determined to come back fighting this weekend in Spain. The nine-time World Champion can claim more victories at Montmel? than any other GP rider with one 125cc win in 1997, 250cc wins in 1998 and 1999, one 500cc victory in 2001 and five premier class victories in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009.

Opened in 1991 and home to the Gran Premio de Catalunya since 1995, the circuit can boast one of the longest main straights in the world. Lorenzo and Rossi will need to find the optimum chassis balance and front-end feel for their YZR-M1s to deal with the long radius, medium and high speed sweeping corners, two tight left-hand corners and numerous camber changes.
Jorge Lorenzo

?I?m quite satisfied after our great result at Mugello that completed an almost perfect weekend. Winning again was very positive for me and for the team and now we go to Montmel?, my home grand prix. Some parts of the track are quite suitable for us but the doubt is always if the track conditions and the temperature can benefit us.
I am very optimistic for the race and we will keep on working on the bike in the same way that we did in Italy. Compared to Mugello, Montmel? is a little bit slower but at least there are no first gear corners and hopefully that will help us a lot. This is a good track for us and we have to profit from it and try to repeat the victory. It could be great for the Championship. As far as I?m concerned I will push 100% to achieve it.?
Valentino Rossi

"For a few days after I had the crash at Mugello, I hurt everywhere! Fortunately I was able to start training immediately and I did not waste any time. The Barcelona race will be very important, especially after recent results. I want to get on the podium in Spain and I will do my best as usual. It will be important to start the weekend in the best way and make a good qualifying. It will be very important to start from the front.?

Wilco Zeelenberg - Yamaha Factory Racing Team Manager
?Barcelona is coming up and we have three Spanish riders on top. I think the motivation of all three is quite high because of visiting their home GP. Last year we had a big battle with Dani there and I think the track suits our bike quite well. After winning at Mugello, where the package worked out really well, we are looking forward to visiting Montmel? with a good spirit to fight. It is one race less and we are closer than before. It?s a very good opportunity to continue with our job.?

Massimo Meregalli - Yamaha Factory Racing Team Director
?After the Mugello race we are going to start the Barcelona weekend in a good shape. For sure the circuit has always been very suitable for our bike so we are pretty optimistic that we can continue the way we finished in Mugello and we are confident Jorge will be fighting at the front as usual. Valentino needs a good result here as he has had some bad luck in the last two races. We are ready for him to recover what he has lost over the last two rounds and perform as we know he can in Catalunya.?

Karel Abraham is looking forward to the race in Barcelona

The Czech rider Karel Abraham is looking forward to coming sixth round of MotoGP in hot Barcelona. Unlike last race in Mugello, where Karel was struggling with illness and where he achieved one point, now he feels fine and ready to fight for more world championship?s points. Even recent operated collarbone will not limited him any more.

Karel Abraham:

?I really enjoy Barcelona, I like racing here. The track suits to me perfectly and it is one of my favourites circuits. In the recent years I?ve achieved a lot of good results here in Montmelo. The only thing that I don?t like about Barcelona is hot weather during a race weekend. But only a few of riders really like to ride in such conditions. Thus I don?t take it as a disadvantage. I got over a flu and neither collarbone limits me now. Our aim for this weekend is being on points of course. Tomorrow after both free practices we will see our chance more real.?

MotoGP back to Spain
The sixth round of the 2013 MotoGP championship returns to Spanish soil again, this time at the Circuit de Catalunya, not far from Barcelona.

This Catalan Grand Prix is very important for Ducati, which in 2003 took its maiden MotoGP victory, and in 2008 (when qualifying tyres were still in use), Casey Stoner rode a Ducati to the still unbeaten best pole time.

This track was inaugurated in 1991, in time for the Olympic Games that would be held in Barcelona the following year, and in 1995 it underwent important changes in order to improve safety. The Nissan chicane was replaced with a straight section, and the runoff areas were expanded. The track is 4.655 km long and is characterized by a long straightaway of over 1 km (1,047 m), as well as long, fast right-hand corners that strain the tyres.

The Energy T.I. Pramac Racing Team and Andrea Iannone will start the race weekend with the aim of continuing the work carried out during the test at Mugello last week, where they had good feedback regarding the lack of rear grip that the Italian complained of during the Italian GP.

Andrea Iannone ? Energy T.I. Pramac Racing Team
?Finally, after yesterday?s flight cancellations, we?ve been able to get to Barcelona. I have wonderful memories about this track, including my Moto2 win last year. This afternoon we?ll have the usual briefing with the team in order to use and develop most of the data obtained during last week?s test. We?re confident because we?ve found the answers to some problems. I hope to find the proper setting starting with the first practice. We expect a hard job, but we?re ready to do it.?

Local hero Pedrosa leads the way to Catalunya

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC213V) goes into his home race outside Barcelona this weekend still leading the way in the battle for the 2013 MotoGP World Championship. His rookie team-mate Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda RC213V) is also still very much in the hunt for the title despite crashing out of the Italian Grand Prix a fortnight ago.

This is the first time that local rider Pedrosa ? born in Sabadell, just 18km from the Catalunya circuit ? has led the points chase going into his home event. The Spaniard leads the way thanks to an excellent start to his 2013 campaign: so far he has scored two victories (at Jerez and Le Mans) and two runner-up finishes (at COTA and Mugello) which followed a tricky first race in Qatar, where he finished fourth.

This weekend?s Catalan Grand Prix should mark another milestone for the 27-year-old ? his 200th Grand Prix start. The former 125 and 250 World Champion made his GP debut at Motegi, Japan, in October 2001. Since then he has won 47 GPs across all three classes, an impressive win rate of 23.7 per cent.
Catalunya ? usually called Montmelo by the locals ? is also the home race for Marquez, born in Cervera, 108km inland from the circuit. The reigning Moto2 World Champion will be hoping for an easier weekend in front of his home fans after an eventful three days at the Italian GP. Marquez, who became the youngest-ever winner of a premier-class GP when he won April?s Grand of the Americas, fell four times at Mugello. After three tumbles in practice he was once again on remarkable form in the race, moving into second place during the closing stages, only to crash one more time.
Despite that DNF, the 20-year-old is only 14 points behind second-placed Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) and 26 points behind Pedrosa. Marquez certainly has form at Catalunya, where he won several regional and national races as he worked his way towards the World Championships. He has finished on the podium on his last three visits, including victory in the 2010 125 race, on his way to securing that year?s 125 World Championship

Alvaro Bautista (Team GO&FUN Honda Gresini RC213V) hopes to put the disappointment of the Italian GP behind him this weekend. At Mugello he was involved in a collision with Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) at the third corner of the race, which took out both riders. Now performing in front of a home crowd for the second time this year, Bautista will be working to continue the progress he had made at earlier races.
Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda RC213V) goes into the Catalan GP still buzzing from a brilliant ride at Mugello, where he equalled his best premier-class finish with a hard-fought fourth place. Last year at Catalunya the 2011 Moto2 World Champion enjoyed a thrilling race, taking eighth place after an entertaining battle with several more experienced rivals.

Bryan Staring (GO&FUN Honda Gresini FTR Honda) is still chasing his first points in MotoGP. The Aussie rookie ? who rides a CBR1000RR CRT bike ? has been close on several occasions and knows that he is learning more about MotoGP on every outing.

Catalunya was built in the early 1990s to bring the motorcycling World Championship to Spain?s biking heartland for the first time since 1976, when the Montjuich Park street circuit in downtown Barcelona was deemed too dangerous for GP racing. The magnificent Catalunya circuit hosted its first Grand Prix in May 1992 and has been a popular fixture on the calendar ever since. The track layout is highly technical with an enthralling mix of fast, long corners and slow, tight turns, camber changes and bumps, plus a long start-finish where horsepower and slipstreaming are crucial.

After the Catalan Grand Prix the MotoGP circus heads north west to the historic Dutch TT at Assen, the only surviving event from the World Championship?s inaugural season in 1949.

Honda MotoGP rider quotes

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda says:

?Mugello was a tricky weekend but in the end to come away with second place and 20 Championship points is a good result. I?ve been able to rest a little since returning from Italy and now we head to my home Grand Prix in Catalunya, still leading the World Championship. This track is one of the circuits where you stay on the edge of the tyre longer and also a long time turning right so it?s important to have a good feeling with the tyres. In general it?s a nice track and with a very special atmosphere, all my family and friends come to support me and the fans are incredible. Hopefully the weather is good there and we can put on a good race for everyone at my 200th Grand Prix start!?

Marc Marquez, Repsol Honda says:

?After crashing out in Mugello I really can?t wait to get back on the bike at my home GP in Montmelo! I am more relaxed after seeing Dr Mir last week and he confirmed there are no complications with my injuries and I am on my way to feeling 100 per cent again. I really hope we have good weather in Barcelona so that once again we can make the most out of all the free practice sessions. This is another track where all the other riders have much more experience than me and they will be extra tough to beat! But we will keep to our own programme, work hard and try our best.?

Alvaro Bautista, Team GO&FUN Honda Gresini says:

?The collision with Valentino at Mugello has left a really bitter taste. I really wanted to score a good result in Team GO&FUN Honda Gresini's home race and I had a good feeling about it after working so well throughout the weekend. Unfortunately these things happen in racing and you have to deal with setbacks that you don't expect. The important thing is that physically I am okay and this Sunday I will have the chance to finally put this disappointment behind me. I am very focused on this weekend's racing at Montmelo, another home track for me where I will no doubt get a lot of support from the fans. It is a good circuit for me, I have always gone well there in the past and I remember last year I had a great feeling with the bike and only narrowly missed out on the podium. We have improved this year so I am convinced we can do an even better job. Me and the team are all highly motivated and on Sunday we want to run in the lead group. It is not an easy track because of the elevation changes and the long corners, where the bike slides around a lot. It will also be important to get the bike feeling stable under heavy braking so that we can overtake. Montmelo is one of my favourite circuits, because of the layout and the fact it is so safe for the riders.?

Stefan Bradl, LCR Honda MotoGP says:

?I really enjoyed the Mugello GP and the battle with Dovizioso till the last corner. I arrive in Spain with the aim to improve last year?s result on the RCV because I know the circuit very well and I have the poise of a veteran now! This is another important track for me. I like the layout with fast corners and not so many hard braking areas.?

Bryan Staring, GO&FUN Honda Gresini says:

?I struggled quite a lot at Mugello but since then I have been thinking hard about Catalunya. I have also been dealing with a bout of food poisoning but I am over it now and feeling fit. I am really excited to get out on track at Montmelo. I am really determined to get a good result here for all the guys in the team who are working so hard to help me. Without them the step up to MotoGP would have been even harder, if not impossible, so to give them a little something to smile about is the least I can do in return.?

Back to Spain for Ducati Team

For the second time in a month and a half, the MotoGP championship heads to Spain this week, this time for the Catalan Grand Prix. Site of the Ducati Team?s first MotoGP victory a decade ago, the Circuit de Catalunya is notable for its long main straightaway and ample passing opportunities, and it invariably draws a large and enthusiastic crowd.

Andrea Dovizioso has posted five podium finishes across three classes at the Catalan Grand Prix, including a 250cc victory in 2006. The Italian, who finished third in last year?s MotoGP race and will be riding the Desmosedici GP13 at the track for the first time, has recovered from the sore neck that he suffered in a crash at the Italian Grand Prix last week. Although Nicky Hayden?s sole podium result at the circuit was a runner-up finish in 2006, the same year he won the world championship, the American enjoys the track and is hopeful of a strong result this weekend.

Following the race weekend, the Ducati Team will participate in a one-day official IRTA test at the same circuit, where they will continue development of the Desmosedici GP13.

Andrea Dovizioso ? Ducati Team
?Barcelona is one of the nicest tracks on the calendar, and it?s always fun to go to Spain for a race weekend. As for the Ducati, I?m not sure because I?ve never ridden the GP13 on this circuit, but it might not be the best track for us because of the fast corners where our bike tends to ?pump? a bit in the rear. Still, I?m keeping an open mind as we head to Barcelona. I?m always very excited to go there, and I?m optimistic following a good weekend at Mugello and a good test last week.?

Nicky Hayden ? Ducati Team

?Barcelona hasn?t been a great weekend for me in recent years. I?ve struggled a bit there, especially with the long corners, which are very important. Still, we know Catalunya is a great track, and I really enjoy the area and the atmosphere. I certainly hope to do a better result there than I have the last couple of seasons. We?ll see what we can come up with, and we?ll keep pushing and moving forward.?

Vittoriano Guareschi ? Team Manager
?Barcelona is a track that has many nice memories for Ducati and for me; ten years ago, the GP3 made its debut there in winter testing with Loris Capirossi, who took the pole in the time attack. Also, this year is the tenth anniversary of Ducati?s first MotoGP victory! We head to Barcelona fresh off of another two days of testing at Mugello, where we found a couple of interesting things. Now we?ll try them on a different track to see if they provide some benefits. I?d just like to add that during this busy period?between racing, testing, and development?we?re all under pressure and working really hard, so I?d like to thank all the team members for their effort.?

Rossi Takes Charge in Catalunya

Yamaha Factory Racing?s Valentino Rossi wrapped up the first day of practice for the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya at the top of the time sheets as the fastest rider in sweltering conditions and a track temperature that topped 50 degrees. Having named the track as one of his top three favourites the nine-time champion was clearly enjoying being back at the Circuit de Catalunya on his YZR-M1. Rossi wrapped up the morning first practice in fifth position, just under half a second from the front. He upped the pace in the afternoon, diving under the circuit record in the last three minutes with a 1?42.297 lap on a fresh soft tyre to go top.

Reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo was on typical form in front of his home crowd today and was quick to find his trademark blistering pace. Lorenzo wrapped up the morning session in first, 0.023 seconds ahead of fellow Spanish rider Dani Pedrosa. The afternoon saw a repeat performance as he led for the majority of the session, only passed by his teammate in the final minutes to leave him in second place, 0.049 seconds from Rossi in first.
Valentino Rossi - 1st, Time 1'42.297

?I love this track it is one of the best, the M1 is always great here in Catalunya. It is just Friday but I am very happy to be in front but we have a lot of work to do. We have to decide which tyre to use and we have some corners and sections where we have to improve for tomorrow. Anyway, it is a great to be in the first position.?
Jorge Lorenzo - 2nd, Time 1'42.346

?We started very well but we tried two settings that didn?t work so well. We stayed with the same tyres for the whole practice to understand why they are dropping in this weather so we could solve this problem that I think all the riders are having. It is always possible to improve so we have to try and improve the bike so I have more confidence, then I can stay in the middle of the 42 second mark which is my target. We don?t focus so much on the classification because not all the riders kept on the same tyres during the practice, a new tyre can give you half a second or more. We have to trust the pace and the pace is good, one of the best of the grid."

Wilco Zeelenberg, Yamaha Factory Racing Team Manager
?A very good first day in very hot conditions it was important to see how the bike behaved this afternoon. Jorge was not really pleased with the performance but I was actually pleased as we have a clear direction for tomorrow, this is what counts. It?s the first day, we are still second and Vale was fast with the soft tyre at the end. We found our direction to work in for tomorrow which is good.?

Massimo Meregalli, Yamaha Factory Racing Team Director

?A really good starting point, having both bikes in the top two is a good result. We still have a lot of work to do. We have to perfect the set up and decide on which tyre to use in the race, so far we?ve done a good job so let?s see what we can do to make it even better tomorrow.?

Crutchlow fourth after fast start in Catalunya

Cal Crutchlow?s sky high confidence was once again reflected on the MotoGP timesheets after the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team rider challenged for the top three in both free practice sessions at the Circuit de Catalunya today. The British rider wasted no time in establishing a fast rhythm this morning when he stormed into the top three in FP1, a personal best lap of 1.42.492 only 0.070s off reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo?s best pace. With air and track temperatures soaring under gloriously sunny skies this afternoon, Crutchlow logged a best time of 1.42.776 in FP2 to clinch fifth spot on the leaderboard. Rather than use a soft Bridgestone rear tyre to improve his pace, the 27-year-old preferred to check endurance with the harder option to give the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team as much information as possible on tyre wear ahead of Sunday?s 25-lap race. Crutchlow was fourth fastest on the combined rankings with his faster pace in FP1 this morning meaning he was only 0.047s outside of the top three and less than 0.2s away from Valentino Rossi?s best pace of 1.42.297.

Today?s action proved to be another tough and painful learning experience for Bradley Smith, the rookie finishing 14th after a fast fall in the second session. After heavy falls during preparations for the previous round in Mugello left him with left hand and wrist injuries, Smith made a positive start to then Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya today when he set the 12th fastest time in FP1. As temperatures soared to a gruelling 28 degrees this afternoon, Smith had already dropped his pace to a 1.44.247 when he suffered a tumble at Turn 3 shortly after the halfway stage. Fortunately he was uninjured in the spill and he will now work closely with his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 crew to find some improvements with his YZR-M1 ahead of tomorrow?s final practice and qualifying sessions.
Cal Crutchlow - 4th, Time 1.42.492

?I am really happy with today?s practice because we experimented a lot with the bike and found some very positive things that will help me for the rest of the weekend. This afternoon when the temperature really came hot I didn?t use a soft tyre and we can see from the timesheets how much of an advantage that was. I am sure if I had used the soft tyre I?d have been inside the top three but I preferred to do a long run with the hard tyre and it was positive. I need to improve a bit in the first sector but we have some changes planned for tomorrow that should help make me stronger and overall today I am really happy. I am convinced it is going to be a big fight on Sunday with the Spanish boys obviously wanting to put on a show here but I am looking forward to being part of the battle.?
Bradley Smith - 14th, Time 1.44.247

?Today was another tough day. I am not feeling so confident with the setting and I am missing some confidence myself. I am lucky I didn?t damage my body in the crash because it was another big fall. I lost the front and as I tried to save it the rear tyre gripped and threw me off. The bike hit my left knee and that?s why I was limping in the gravel but luckily I am fine. Right now I need to work hard and sit down with my crew to find where I am loosing most of the time. I don?t really know what is missing but we will find something tonight and approach it at 100% again tomorrow.?

Warm conditions for free practice at Catalan GP
The first free-practice sessions from the second MotoGP round of the year to be held on Spanish soil ended today with Andrea Iannone holding a best time of 1:43.272. The Italian, who had spent last night fighting a problem with his ear, sat in eleventh place in the combined times, having improved his best lap from the morning session by nearly a second.

Iannone remains determined, his goal for this weekend being to continue developing the new ideas that emerged from the recent test at Mugello, in order to increase his competitiveness. His gaps to the two Ducati Team riders?a bit more than three tenths from Nicky Hayden and two tenths from Andrea Dovizioso?help provide reason for optimism as the Energy T.I. Pramac Racing Team continues its work.

Andrea Iannone ? Energy T.I. Pramac Racing Team
?It seems like everything is happening to me this year! Fortunately, Claudio [Dr Costa] is always at the track, and when my ear began tormenting me last night, he helped me to finally get some rest. Apart from that, I can say that the day didn?t go so badly in the end. The gap to Nicky and Dovi on this track is smaller than usual, and we?re a second faster compared to the first session. Of course I still have some problems. I?m struggling in the faster sections in the last part of the track, and on corner entry, where I tend to go wide. We?re still working though, and after some updates, things went better today. This morning I immediately went out with the hard tyre, and it didn?t go badly, but the pace was better with the soft in the afternoon session. I was able to ride better, but I?m not sure for the race. We?ll see how things go tomorrow.?

GP of Catalunya begins under scorching Spanish sun
Round six of the 2013 Championship began today with the first two free practice sessions in preparation for Sunday's race in Montmel?, Catalunya, and Repsol Honda riders Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez had a productive day aboard their Honda RC213V machines in very hot conditions.
In the morning session, with a track temperature of 33?C and air temperature of 25?C, both riders opted the soft front and soft rear Bridgestone tyres to take the first feelings from the 4.727km Spanish circuit. Dani completed 18 laps and was 2nd fastest with a lap of 1'42.445 and Marc was 9th fastest with 1'43.641 after 19 laps in his first appearance here on a MotoGP machine.
In the afternoon, temperatures rose to 49?C on the track with an ambient temperature of 28?C. Dani went out early in the session with a new hard front, keeping the soft rear from the morning session, but before long he changed for a fresh hard rear and although he was unable to improve his lap time from the morning, it was crucial to test how the hard tyre performed. He completed a total of 17 laps taking his fastest (with the hard rear) on lap 12 with 1'42.557, placing him 3rd in the combined times for the day.
Marc started the FP2 session as he left FP1, with soft rear and soft front, but he also changed for both hard option tyres and improved from the morning session by 0.784 with a time of 1'42.857 on lap 10 of 18, placing him 6th for the day.
Dani Pedrosa - 3rd - 1'42.445
"Above all today, we focused on testing tyres. We were able to ride some laps with the soft tyres and also the hards, in order to see which are best suited to the track. Getting the choice right is very important at this circuit, because it is always hot in the race and it is usually a key to managing this. The tyres suffer a little when we lean the bike over, but we are working on this issue. We still haven't decided which compounds we will use, so we will see what tomorrow brings and then go from there"

Marc Marquez - 6th - 1'42.857
"I am pretty happy with how the day went. We followed the normal Friday agenda; in the first session we were ninth, over one second from the top, then in the second session we cut the gap to half a second and finished sixth in the combined times. I am very happy with the work that we have done, but we still have things to improve and there are points on the track where I am still not comfortable. I have to improve my adaptation to the circuit and some details with the setup but the most important thing is that we have cut the gap and are working in the right direction"

Hayden, Dovizioso seventh and eighth in Barcelona free practice

Day one of the Catalan Grand Prix concluded with Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso occupying the seventh and eighth positions, respectively in the combined times from the first two MotoGP free-practice sessions.

Conditions at the Circuit de Catalunya were warmer today than has been the case at the previous rounds, and the two Ducati Team riders are doing their best to find the ideal settings for their Desmosedici GP13 race machines.

Nicky Hayden - Ducati Team, 7th (1:42.890)
?It wasn?t a spectacular day, but the team has worked well and made some good improvements between exits, which helped us to increase our pace in the afternoon. With a new tyre, the bike is working well, but it becomes a problem when the grip goes away. I got into the 42s twice, and the gap to the next couple of guys is pretty small, but we?ve got to do anything we can to improve the longevity of the tyres.?

Andrea Dovizioso - Ducati Team, 8th (1:42.988)
?I think we?ve still got a lot of work to do, as I?m not feeling comfortable on the bike in a number of ways. We must re-evaluate the riding position because this track is quite different from Mugello and requires different solutions. We?re not sure about the moved-back position, which had worked well at the test last week in Italy. For this reason, we tried a number of different setups. Pace-wise, we?re not so bad, but we definitely must improve because the pace always increases in the race, and those who are best prepared do better.?

Karel Abraham has started in good way in Barcelona

In first two free practices of sixth racing weekend in Barcelona has participated also Karel Abraham. During the morning free practice Karel achieved the sixteenth fastest time and fourth fastest time in CRT category with time 1:45,251. In the afternoon even through very hot weather in Montmelo circuit Karel Abraham managed to overcome his result. Abaja has improved his time to 1:44,599 despite technical problems with rear traction.

Karel Abraham
?It was quit good today. We had only one problem with low adhesion of rear of motorbike. The motorcycle was very slippery on the track, but mechanics are working on this right now and tomorrow it would be fine. My hand got swollen again and it?s painful at the moment. It is because of very hot weather. I?m going to put some ice on my hand and I hope it will be good for tomorrow. After today?s free practice I have good feeling and I?m looking forward to tomorrow?s qualification.?

Marco Grana, chief mechanic Cardion AB Motoracing
?I?m very satisfied with today?s work. We have to solve the problem with rear traction until tomorrow. But the most important is that we were able to follow team Power Electronic Aspar that is essential for us now. Karel is still not hundred percent ok, but I see it as big move ahead compared to the race in Mugello. Today we used hard tyres, so for tomorrow we have enough amounts of soft ones. I suppose that we?ll be faster tomorrow and that we?ll achieved good result.?

Eighth place on the grid for Iannone and the Energy T.I. Pramac Racing Team

Andrea Iannone and his team had a busy qualifying day today, taking part in every MotoGP session, but by day?s end they had earned the eighth spot on the starting grid?their best of the season so far.

The FP4 session had gone well, with some positive changes being found ahead of Q1, helping the Italian to make the third row for tomorrow. There are still some aspects to work on, and no decision has yet been made regarding which tyre to use in the race, although with today?s high temperatures?30? air and 52? asphalt?Andrea preferred the soft option.

Andrea Iannone - Energy T.I. Pramac Racing Team

?I?m happy with today. We made it to Q2, and I did some good laps by myself, which is positive for tomorrow. The pace stayed high, and it may be the first weekend that we?ve really managed to ride hard, improve the bike, and understand the direction to take. I felt quite good today despite some problems that we still have?difficulty in slowing the bike for corner entry, for example?but we know that these are our limits at the moment. In order to remedy the problem, we probably won?t be able to use an ideal setting, as we?ll have to opt for better rear grip in order to decrease the sliding. We certainly won?t solve that for tomorrow, but together with Ducati, we?re preparing for the next GPs. Anyway, we?re improving little by little, and every day I understand better how to continue our work. I?m still not sure which tyre to use in the race. Today we worked mainly on getting the most from the soft tyre. We changed some things that gave positive feedback, and we?ll make our decision after analyzing the data to compare the pace in the different sessions, although I?m currently more inclined to use the soft. The guys did a great job, and now we have to stay strong in order to be fast in the race.?

Lorenzo Delivers Catalunya Front Row

Jorge Lorenzo continued his unbroken run as the only rider to consistently start from the front row this season, taking third on the grid for tomorrow?s Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya. The reigning world champion had only the last minutes of the brief qualifying heat to record a best time after a clutch issue forced him to pit shortly after the session started. Despite the setback he was able to salvage a front row start in third with a 1?41.566 after completing just seven laps. Lorenzo was able to walk away uninjured from a crash in the morning?s third free practice after losing the front at turn five. Conditions were even hotter than yesterday with track temperatures hitting up to 57 degrees over the afternoon.

Having been the fastest rider yesterday Valentino Rossi continued his competitive pace into the third free practice this morning, ending in fourth but just 0.156 seconds from first. Having mastered race pace the nine-time champion turned to qualifying, allowing most of the field to leave the pits before venturing out to find some clean track. Using the harder front and soft rear tyre option he delivered a best time of 1?41.959 to take seventh on the third row of the grid, less than four tenths from his team mate Lorenzo on the front row.
Jorge Lorenzo, 3rd, Time - 1'41.566, 7 laps

?I?m very disappointed because today we had a problem with the clutch in a crucial moment and this lap time was the best I could do. I also had not so much confidence on the front to make a perfect lap. We hope for race distance we can remain constant and fight for the win. We will need to be strong and concentrate for the whole race; we don't know what can happen in the 20th lap.?
Valentino Rossi, 7th, Time - 1'41.959, 8 laps

?We worked hard today; it?s not so bad but unfortunately we are not able to start from a better position on the grid. We tried everything but I still don't have the maximum feeling to improve a bit more. The race tomorrow is going to be very interesting because of the tyre choice and the rhythm. There are four or five riders who are very fast and very constant so we hope to do a good start and good first laps to stay with the top guys and check our performance.?
Wilco Zeelenberg, Yamaha Factory Racing Team Manager

?A strange day but overall we are in front row even when we had a problem with the first bike. The clutch was spinning when he went out which isn?t ideal because you miss a bit of time with your first tyre. He did well anyway with a 1?41.7s lap. We had to stay out with the same bike, but he was able to make a 1?41.5s lap to qualify for the front row. I think that was the maximum for today, Dani with his 40.8 was unreachable. We have to sort out what went wrong with the clutch and dig into our set ups to prepare for tomorrow?s race.?
Massimo Meregalli, Yamaha Factory Racing Team Director

?We are quite satisfied with the pace we could run in the free practices but the qualifying didn't go as we expected. We have to try and close the gap as our competitors are quicker, especially in the hot conditions that we will probably have again tomorrow. We will work to understand how to improve the total package and we will do our best to be as competitive as possible for tomorrow. The race is always different to the qualifying session. We know the tyres we are going to use, we have to try and make the rear last as long as possible. The race is going to be tough and difficult but we will be ready.?
Crutchlow fastest Yamaha in Catalunya qualifying

Cal Crutchlow stormed to his second front row of 2013 in scorching heat at the Circuit de Catalunya this afternoon, the British rider continuing his hot streak of form to qualify as the fastest Yamaha rider ahead of the sixth round of the MotoGP World Championship. The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team rider saved his best for last with a blistering lap of 1.41.501 on his eighth and final lap moving him ahead of reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo to secure second position on the grid for tomorrow?s 25-lap race. With temperatures rocketing to a sweltering 30 degrees, Crutchlow delivered an ice cool performance to challenge for a ninth career front row right from the start of the 15-minute QP2. The 27-year-old was immediately inside the top three and he never looked like missing out on his front row start since the opening round in Qatar, his quickest lap making him the fastest Yamaha rider by 0.065s ahead of home crowd hero Lorenzo.

Bradley Smith will start the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya from 11th on the grid, the British rider bouncing back superbly from a heavy crash in yesterday?s sun-drenched practice to post a best time of 1.42.548. Smith didn?t let yesterday?s tumble dent his confidence and he advanced into QP2 with a best lap of 1.42.607, with only Andrea Iannone able to lap within 0.5s of the 22-year-old in QP1. As track temperatures soared to over 50 degrees this afternoon in conditions that provided an extreme test of both man and machine, Smith was only a second off the sensational pace set by teammate Crutchlow and he is confident he can battle for the top 10 tomorrow.
Cal Crutchlow, 2nd, Time - 1.41.501, 8 laps

?I think we did a great job today and I am really happy to be back on the front row. It seems a while since I managed it at the first race in Qatar and at least I won?t be starting from fourth again. The conditions were really tricky with the incredibly high track temperature and it looks like it is going to be a big battle in the race tomorrow. I?ll be happy to get a good start and hang with Dani and Jorge because they are obviously going to be strong. Jorge had a few problems today and maybe without those he would have taken second off me. But there?s no doubt we deserve this front row and that?s a good reward for all the hard work done by my Monster Yamaha Tech 3 crew. Congratulations to Dani though because that was an incredible lap time in such tricky conditions.?
Bradley Smith, 11th, Time - 1.42.548, 8 laps

?I?m feeling a lot more positive now considering what happened yesterday when I was quite slow. I?ve managed to go 1.7s faster today and that?s a great step. I am only a second away from Cal and that is my normal level and I feel we did a good job. When you go so much faster though the feeling with the bike changes and I could do with one more day of practice to fine-tune the set-up. I am really looking forward to the race now. Tyre wear in such hot conditions is going to be critical but I need to stay with the group in the first eight laps and then it will be a big fight to see who can conserve the tyres for the longest. I need to say a big thanks to my Monster Yamaha Tech 3 crew because they have worked really hard on changing the bike to help me improve. My left hand I injured in Mugello was also much better today and it won?t cause me any issues in the race.?

Karel Abraham will start from the sixth row

Karel Abraham took part of Saturday?s free practices and following qualification practice of Grand Prix of Catalonia. He was getting faster, but unfortunately technical problems made impossible another improvement of his best time 1:44,362. This result ensured just seventeenth position on the grid. Thus Abaja will start to tomorrow?s race from sixth row. Spaniard Daniel Pedrosa dominated in today?s qualification practice and he broke the best time of the circuit with 1:40,893. Karel lost 3,469 seconds to the winner of the qualification practice.

Karel Abraham
? I have mixed feelings today. On the one hand I?m satisfied because we were able to solve problem with rear traction and the motorbike suits to me more than yesterday. On the other hand our final result could be for sure better, but during last fastest laps of qualifying practice appeared one problem with automatic gear shift and I lost some tenths in last two sectors. In warm up we?ll be able to manage rest of the problems because even in the morning is a quiet hot weather so we are able to try many things. My hand is still swollen, it is not ideal, but I?m just on my way to medical center where I?ll put it to special machine and it will freeze my hand about half and hour. Swelling is than rapidly getting better. Thus I?m gonna be ready for tomorrow. The aim remains the same, which is gain of some points.?

Marco Grana, chief mechanic Cardion AB Motoracing
? It is another though day behind us. During the afternoon free practice unfortunately some problems appeared and their solving took a lot of time to us. We removed the problem with rear traction and during tomorrow?s warm up we will try to manage other problem. What a pity that during last fastest laps the gear shift broke down. Never mind, tomorrow we are ready to reach top fifteen. I expect that we can run a good race.?

Record-breaker Pedrosa puts Honda on pole at Catalunya

Local hero Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC213V) set a new circuit record at blazing hot Catalunya this afternoon to take pole position for tomorrow?s Catalan Grand Prix, one-third distance in this year?s MotoGP World Championship.

Another local Alvaro Bautista (Team GO&FUN Honda Gresini RC213V) recorded his best qualifying performance of the season, taking fourth on the grid, just 0.148 seconds off the front row. Pedrosa?s team-mate Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda RC213V) will also start from the second row, after qualifying sixth for his first premier-class race at Catalunya.

Pedrosa?s storming lap at this magnificent circuit outside Barcelona was an exercise in perfection and he rates it as one of the best of his life. The lap was almost three tenths inside Casey Stoner?s pole record, established in 2008, the last year of qualifying tyres. Pole position gives the former 125 and 250 World Champion the opportunity for a great start in his home race, which he will start as World Championship leader for the first time in his premier-class career. Tomorrow?s race will also be Pedrosa?s 200th Grand Prix event.

As always, Pedrosa has focused most of his attention on achieving the best-possible race-long performance. This is particularly important in sweltering weather ? the track temperature today was 52 degrees ? when riders know they will have to deal with a real drop-off in tyre performance during the race. Catalunya is very demanding for tyres, with many long corners that put riders on the very edge of the tyres for long periods of time.

Bautista was delighted with his fourth place, while also being slightly disappointed to miss the front row by such a slender margin. His previous best grid position of the year was sixth at Jerez. Last year Bautista scored his first premier-class pole at Silverstone.

Following a torrid Italian GP two weeks ago, Marquez has been steadily getting up to speed since practice got underway yesterday morning. As usual the 20-year-old has had to learn his way around the track on a MotoGP bike. Sixth fastest yesterday he proved his ability to learn and move forward by going fastest this morning, to end the first three practice sessions on top. However, the reigning Moto2 World Champion couldn?t quite reproduce that performance in qualifying, ending the 15-minute session 0.949 seconds behind his team-mate. Marquez was the fourth Catalan rider in the top six today.

During the first three practice sessions Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda RC213V) was on impressive form, lapping just four tenths off the front-running pace. Qualifying didn?t go quite so well for the young German who ended the session in tenth, though only 0.248 seconds off the second row. Nevertheless he knows he has a good race pace and is therefore confident for tomorrow.

MotoGP rookie Bryan Staring (GO&FUN Honda Gresini FTR Honda) had a good morning session on his CBR1000RR-powered CRT bike, which gave him some confidence for qualifying. He wasn?t able to find the step forward he needed, however, leaving him 22nd fastest.

Honda MotoGP rider quotes

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda: pole position, 1m 40.893s

?I am very happy, because we put in a great lap and took a great qualifying time. It was a fantastic pole position for me. We also broke the circuit record and were able to do so in front of the home fans. I am also happy about improving our race pace, as this is the most important thing. We hope to put on a good show tomorrow and take full advantage of the front row start.?

Alvaro Bautista, Team GO&FUN Honda Gresini: 4th, 1m 41.714s

?Today we have to be happy because we got really close to the front row of the grid for tomorrow?s race. I immediately felt good with the soft tyres for qualifying and I was able to push with conviction. We made several tests to evaluate the durability of the tyres for the race because this will be the biggest problem for everyone. In qualifying we went back to yesterday?s set-up because the other ideas we tried in practice didn?t give me confidence. Tomorrow will be a very tough race but my starting position is good and so I?ll exploit it to try and stay with the leaders. Tyre management will be crucial for a good result.?

Marc Marquez, Repsol Honda: 6th, 1m 41.842s

?I am fairly happy and satisfied, because we achieved our objective of getting onto either the first or second row. In the morning I felt more comfortable, with the track temperatures lower than in the afternoon. When they rose sharply, we had more problems. Despite this, I think that we have done a good job. We will try to test out a few things in the warm-up tomorrow and see if we can gain a little more confidence when the track is hotter.?

Stefan Bradl, LCR Honda MotoGP: 10th, 1m 42.090s

?Obviously this is a disappointing qualifying for us as we were expecting a second-row start. We missed some time and I lapped all alone for the whole session, which is unusual for the new 15-minute system. We changed the plan a bit during the session ? I did three laps on the first tyre and second on the second tyre, missing a few tenths to make the second row. It?s not the end of the world anyway because we should be able to do a good race tomorrow. Over race distance our potential is higher than what we showed today, so I still feel very confident.?

Bryan Staring, GO&FUN Honda Gresini: 22nd, 1m 45.441s

?I have made some progress but not enough to get higher up the grid. I was struggling for grip in the fast corners, where I found cornering difficult. After the progress this morning I expected a bigger step forward, but it didn?t happen.?

Second, third rows for Ducati Team at Catalan GP

In sunny and hot conditions at the Circuit de Catalunya, Ducati Team riders Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso rode to the fifth and ninth spots on the grid, respectively, for tomorrow?s Catalan Grand Prix.

It was a positive day for Hayden, who was the second-quickest rider in the morning session, then backed it up with his best qualifying session of the year thus far. The American had also set the circuit top-speed record in free practice aboard his Desmosedici GP13, although the mark was subsequently eclipsed by Marc Marquez in the afternoon. Meanwhile, Dovizioso improved his pace from yesterday, but had back luck in qualifying and didn?t manage to put together a good lap. He?ll share tomorrow?s all-Italian third row with Valentino Rossi and Andrea Iannone.

Nicky Hayden - Ducati Team, 5th (1:41.800)

?Dani [Pedrosa] had a spectacular pole lap, but the front row wasn?t out of the question for me today. That would?ve been nice, but this is still my best qualifying position of the year so far. The bike is working pretty well when we have new tyres, but as soon as we lose a little bit of edge grip, it starts pumping. It was okay for qualifying, but we?ll have to try something tomorrow morning to see if we can make the tyre last longer. We know it won?t be an easy race, but hopefully we can put up a good fight and have some fun.?

Andrea Dovizioso - Ducati Team, 9th (1:42.053)
?It?s a shame about the qualifying session. Unfortunately, I wasn?t able to do a perfect lap, and starting from the third row won?t be easy. That?s too bad because Barcelona is one of the nicest tracks to ride when you have a perfect lap, but I?m mainly disappointed that our spot on the grid will make it difficult for us tomorrow. My first exit was good, and I knew that if I could put all the sectors together, I could lower my time by three or four tenths. Then on my first lap with the second tyre, the bike closed the front in turn four. I almost fell and had to abort the lap in order to save the tyre. We?ve improved a lot from yesterday?more with pace than on a fast lap?but it will certainly be a very difficult race as we?ll all be struggling when the tyres wear. It will be important to make up some positions at the start, as anything can happen in the race.?

Consolatory top-ten finish for Pirro

It was a tough weekend in the Ignite Pramac Racing Team garage, and it was made even more difficult when Michele Pirro made contact with Yonny Hernandez just after the start and ran wide in turn nine.

The Italian, in his second appearance as a substitute rider for Ben Spies, nonetheless rejoined the race and began the hard work of recovering positions, advancing as high as tenth place with nine laps remaining and maintaining that position to the end.

Pirro, who also serves as the Ducati Test Team rider, will remain at the Circuit de Catalunya tomorrow for an IRTA test, in which he?ll work on extracting maximum performance from the ?laboratory? version of the Desmosedici GP13.

Michele Pirro ? Ignite Pramac Racing Team
?Unfortunately, in order to avoid Hernandez on the first lap, I was forced to go long in a corner and run off the track. Then I took a long time to get through the gravel because of the anti-spin, and by the time I got back on track, I couldn?t see anyone?I thought maybe the race was finished! At that point, I gave it everything I had to recover as many positions as possible. I tried switching maps to see if it would reduce the pumping, but I wasn?t able to reduce the gap as much as I wanted. I hoped to catch Dovi, but then I realized that the tyre was losing a lot and I had to settle for tenth place. We didn?t change much compared to Mugello, as we didn?t have enough time, but due to the worse pumping and grip we found all this weekend, this is how it went. On one hand I?m happy to have had the opportunity to ride here because we were able to see this bike?s limits, but on the other hand I?m disappointed because I hoped to have a better result. We?ll see how things go in tomorrow?s test, and then at Assen, although I still don?t know which bike I?ll ride.?

Lorenzo Delivers Perfect Catalunya Victory

Yamaha Factory Racing?s Jorge Lorenzo delivered a perfect performance today in the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya to take his second consecutive Grand Prix victory, his third of the 2013 season. A scorching start from third on the grid saw the local hero pass pole man Dani Pedrosa almost immediately for the hole shot into turn one. A classic Lorenzo master class followed with the reigning world champion maintaining a metronome precision over race distance to keep the two following Hondas of Pedrosa and Marc Marquez behind. The result closes the gap at the top of the championship standings with Lorenzo now on 116 points, just seven behind leader Pedrosa as they head for the Dutch TT in Assen in two weeks time.

Teammate Valentino Rossi made a good start on his YZR-M1, jumping two places to hold fifth going into turn one. The nine-time champion looked comfortable behind fellow Yamaha rider Cal Crutchlow until the young Brit crashed out, promoting Rossi to fourth. By this time a small gap had grown to the front three riders and despite at times lapping faster than the front he was unable to close the gap, riding a relatively lonely race to fourth at the line. The result gives Rossi 13 points and closes the gap to Crutchlow in fourth to just 11 points.
Jorge Lorenzo 1st

?A perfect day, to be honest I didn't expect to win, I knew I had some chance but not like in Mugello where I was more convinced we could get the victory. It was really difficult physically as it was the hottest race of the year. I kept pushing 100% all race because any mistake would have been a disaster. I was surprised at the start as I expected to just pass Cal but I passed Dani also. I took profit from it and tried to open the gap but it was not enough to go away, Dani was there and we played some games, I was 0.5 ahead then 0.2; I was going then he was recovering me. Finally because I was tough mentally and never gave up I could open in the last five laps a little gap that was enough to win. The girl who designed my helmet, Anna Vives, is famous in Spain; she is a symbol that people with Down syndrome are capable of a lot more than some people think. I think it was very original and colourful so I was very proud and happy to have her on the podium to share the win with me.?
Valentino Rossi 4th

?We wanted to try and arrive on the podium, but anyway it was quite a good race. Race by race, apart form the unlucky times, especially like Mugello, we grow up and I am able to ride the bike in a better way. We still have some challenges, especially in the first part of the race where I still don't have the right setting to push to the maximum. After some laps my pace was not so bad and we were not so far from the top guys. We did a good job and we will now go for two days of testing where we will try to improve further. We don't give up, we will make another step and we will not be so far from the front.?
Wilco Zeelenberg, Yamaha Factory Racing Team Manager

?A fantastic day here in Barcelona, I think maybe one of his best races ever, maybe not the fastest as the circumstances were not good and the lap times were slow, but to ride on the limit every lap and push as he did to keep a little gap to Dani and Marc is very impressive. I?m very happy for the team and also Vale finished with good points which is good. The championship is close, there was a lot to lose and a little bit to win today, the five points extra we got are important. It?s always important to beat your competitors but it?s not always possible. Mugello and Catalunya are very smooth tracks and fit our bike quite well and Jorge loves them. For sure we will get some tracks where we struggle a bit more. We must think ahead, this one is done and there are still 12 races to go.?
Massimo Meregalli, Yamaha Factory Racing Team Director

?Another super performance from Jorge. He has been really impressive. I think the whole team did a really good job as they were able to close the gap, improving the bike overnight as yesterday we really suffered in hot conditions compared to our competitors. He couldn't have done better so compliments to him and his crew. For me Vale has done his best race after Qatar. His feeling is getting better and he is getting closer. I think the circumstances were very difficult today, really hot conditions and a big lack of grip. For me we closed the weekend in a really good way. After the race we have revised the test plan, due to the weather forecast. After internal discussion we have decided to stay here at Catalunya tomorrow and to test at Aragon on Wednesday only. We will test a few things for the frame to try and improve it; let's see what we can prepare for Assen.?
Super sixth for Smith, Crutchlow falls in Catalunya

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team experienced a day of contrasting fortunes at the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya this afternoon, the highlight of the 25-lap race a stunning career best sixth place finish for rookie Bradley Smith. Smith?s joy at his first top six in MotoGP was countered though by a disappointing afternoon for on form Cal Crutchlow, who saw his quest for a record-breaking third successive podium ended when he fell unhurt out of fourth on lap six. Smith?s weekend ended on a positive note after the 22-year-old bounced back superbly from a heavy crash on Friday, which followed two nasty falls during the previous round in Mugello. Nursing a badly damaged little finger and fractured bone in his left wrist after the Mugello crashes, Smith brushed aside the pain and discomfort this weekend and he needed only three laps in baking hot conditions to move into the top 10. With a track temperature nudging a sizzling 52 degrees, tyre management became a critical factor on the slippery surface. Smith coped with the tricky track conditions more like a seasoned campaigner than a rookie and his maiden top six was secured when he passed Andrea Dovizioso on lap 23, having recovered a gap to the Italian that was over four seconds at one stage.

Cal Crutchlow?s incredible run of form ended in the early stages when he fell out of fourth while in pursuit of Spanish trio Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez. Seeking to add to his brilliant top three finishes in Le Mans and Mugello, the 27-year-old had further raised expectations when he topped the timesheets in this morning?s warm-up session. The British rider still remains in fourth position in the World Championship standings on 71-points and he is confident he will be back in the podium hunt at the next race in Assen.
Bradley Smith 6th

?Obviously today was a much more positive result for me, even if sixth position looks a bit better than it really is. But at the end you have to finish the race to score the points and I did that in difficult conditions while not at my 100% physical best. So it is a great result for the team and me. I really focused on the first eight laps trying not to make any mistakes and trying to stay as close to Dovizioso and (Stefan) Bradl because I knew they should have been more or less on the same race pace as me. I tried to attack Espargaro as quick as possible so I didn?t lose too much time and I managed that. Finally to be in a fight with Andrea towards the closing laps of the race, knowing that he has been always very strong during this part of the race, was obviously something special and makes me feel proud. And to finish 32 seconds behind the winner is another great step and I just want to continue like this until the summer break. My team did a fantastic job to help me on the YZR-M1 and we really turned around a difficult Friday to have a great result on Sunday and that makes me really happy.?
Cal Crutchlow DNF

?Obviously I am disappointed that a great weekend ended with a crash and I have to hold my hands up and say it was a stupid mistake on my part. Like last season and again in the first few races of 2013, I have been struggling to stop the bike in the early laps with a full fuel load. I was giving it my all to stay in the battle with the top three and unfortunately I hit the kerb on the inside and crashed. It was a silly mistake and I am sorry to the team because I am confident I could have stayed in the fight for the podium right to the end. We have got to understand why we don?t have so much grip at the start of the race but I can take some big positives out of the weekend again. I was on the front row, I was fastest in the warm-up and I was battling for the podium in the race. Now we can go to Assen confident that I will have good speed and be in the rostrum fight again.?

Pedrosa & Marquez second and third for Honda at Catalunya MotoGP race

Local stars Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC213V) and Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda RC213V) finished second and third in this afternoon?s Catalan Grand Prix at Catalunya, a race run in sweltering conditions that turned into something of an exercise in tyre management.

The team-mates chased Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) throughout, spending most of the 25 laps less than half a second behind the reigning World Champion, who stretched his advantage in the final few laps to win by just 1.7 seconds.

Pedrosa?s second successive runner-up result ? following wins at Jerez and Le Mans ? means he retains the World Championship lead, with a seven-point advantage over Lorenzo at one-third distance in the 18-round series.
Pedrosa started his 200th Grand Prix from pole position, also for the second race in a row, but was edged out in the race to the first corner by Lorenzo, with MotoGP rookie Marquez slotting into third after an excellent start from the second row of the grid. The trio stayed in those positions throughout, but they were so close, with the gaps changing by tenths or even hundredths of a second each lap, that the tension remained.
In the early stages Pedrosa was comfortable running Lorenzo?s pace but when he tried to step up his rhythm to attack he found himself on the limit with front grip. So he waited patiently for the fuel load to go down to ease the issue but he never had enough speed into the corners to try for the lead, even though he altered his position on the bike to ease the load on the front tyre.
Then in the closing stages Marquez ? who had set the fastest lap of the race on lap three ? began to challenge his team-mate for second. The reigning Moto2 champ came closest to getting past with two laps to go, when he got inside Pedrosa at Turn Four, only to suffer a major front-end moment. He performed a miracle to stay on and even then didn?t give up the chase, crossing the line a mere 0.063 seconds down on Pedrosa.
Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda RC213V) backed up his fourth-place finish at Mugello ? a result that equalled his career-best in the premier class ? with a good ride to fifth. He spent much of the race riding with Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati), whom he beat at Mugello after a fearsome end-of-race encounter.

MotoGP rookie Bryan Staring (GO&FUN Honda Gresini FTR Honda) was happy to score his first points in the championship, with a 14th place finish in tricky conditions.
Alvaro Bautista (Team GO&FUN Honda Gresini RC213V) had another bitterly disappointing day, sliding off at Turn Ten on the first lap after losing the front. He was challenging Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) at the time. Two weeks ago at Mugello the Spaniard and the Italian both crashed out after colliding on the first lap of the race.

Bautista was far from the only man to hit the gravel today. The baking hot conditions caused grip worries for many riders after the first few laps. In all, seven of the 24 starters crashed out.
MotoGP riders now have a busy few days of testing here at Catalunya and then at Motorland Aragon. The racing continues in two weeks with the Dutch TT at Assen on Saturday 29 June.

Honda MotoGP rider quotes

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda: 2nd

?Today was a bit of a strange race. We could not get maximum performance and physically it was very hard, because of the heat of the bike and the tyres. When I tried to open the throttle the bike wobbled in the front and I had to be very careful. We three frontrunners were battling the track conditions today. It was a bit disappointing not to be able to push more, since the differences between us all was minimal. We rode practically the entire race without any overtaking. It was very easy to make a mistake and, in fact, in the closing laps, Marc [Marquez] made one and I had a slide, but in the end we were able to take a very important second place. We expected to do better after yesterday, but we now have an extra twenty points and we continue to lead the standings.?

Marc Marquez, Repsol Honda: 3rd

?It was a difficult race. We expected it to be tough, but we never imagined that we would be fighting for the podium with Jorge [Lorenzo] and Dani [Pedrosa] and I?m very happy with this result! It gives us confidence after a slightly tricky weekend, as in the end we found the ideal set-up. During the race I learned a lot from riding behind Dani, trying to figure out how to ride a MotoGP bike at this track, and in the end we did quite well. We knew it would be difficult to finish in the top five, but we managed to get on the podium. I can only say I?m thrilled with the result. Now we look to Assen and we?ll see if we can improve anything for that race during the test at Aragon.?

Stefan Bradl, LCR Honda MotoGP: 5th

?Honestly we thought it was going to be tough to get such a good result, so we are very happy about this fifth place. It was a very tough race in hot conditions and I had to be very clever to save the tyres every single lap. Some riders crashed in the early stages, so I decided to be less aggressive in the beginning. I am quite satisfied about my performance because I was capable of adapting to these difficult conditions. This strategy gave me a lot of confidence and a big gap to the guys behind me. Tomorrow we will be back on track for a half-day test here and then two days at Aragon.?

Alvaro Bautista, Team GO&FUN Honda Gresini: DNF

?It is such a shame. We have had a great weekend and this was the last thing we needed. After the start I felt like the guys in front of me were holding me up and in an effort to stay with the lead group I tried to get past them and I crashed. Maybe with a hard tyre on the front I could have been a bit more careful but I was worried about losing touch and I went for it. In hindsight it would have been better to wait but in racing these things happen. I feel sorry for the team because they have done a great job here and I want to apologise to all the guys, who are giving 100% and deserve a different result. Now we just have to look forward to the next race and try to stay calm.?

Bryan Staring, GO&FUN Honda Gresini: 14th

?I scored my first World Championship points today but I am still not particularly happy because I would have liked to do it more on the front foot. It wasn?t an easy race because of the conditions and I was able to improve my pace from qualifying so that?s good but I?m still not happy to be honest. Anyway, we have to take the positives and try to learn from this experience in the future.?

Dovizioso seventh in Catalonia, crash for Hayden

In a Catalan Grand Prix that was marked by sweltering, slippery conditions that contributed to no fewer than ten riders failing to finish and several others taking off-track excursions, Ducati Team racer Andrea Dovizioso was forced to ride in defence mode on his way to seventh place aboard his Desmosedici GP13. Teammate Nicky Hayden, meanwhile, experienced a premature end to what had otherwise been a promising weekend, as he crashed out on the sixth lap.

Having started from the ninth slot on the grid, Dovizioso was mired in the pack early on, and although he had some nice battles with Stefan Bradl and Bradley Smith, his bike lost grip as the race went on, forcing him to settle for seventh place. His American teammate lost a few positions just off the start but rode well as he made the passes to regain his fifth-place starting position. Unfortunately, a lap-six mistake on corner entry resulted in a race-ending fall.

The Ducati Team will remain in Barcelona tomorrow for the post-race IRTA test.

Andrea Dovizioso - Ducati Team, 7th
?We knew it was going to be difficult on this track, due to the layout and the bike?s pumping, but it was worse than we thought. I really didn?t think I?d do such slow lap times, but with the heat, the performance became worse and worse every lap as we lost grip. It?s just more confirmation that we?re still a long way back, and that we have a lot more work to do.?

Nicky Hayden - Ducati Team, NC
?It?s such a disappointment because until the crash, it had been my best weekend of the year so far. I got a pretty good jump on the start, but some guys overtook me going to turn one. I had to make a few passes, but once I got into fifth I thought I had the grip to do a solid race. Unfortunately, I went into a corner a bit deep, stayed on the brake too long, and went down. It was my fault, especially with the track being so hot and greasy, and I apologize to the team because they had given me a bike that was working pretty well. There?s nothing to do but take it on the chin and try to shake it off.?

Bernhard Gobmeier ? Ducati Corse General Manager
?It was a weekend to forget, with a crash for Nicky, who until then had enjoyed a fairly good feeling with the bike and shown good results in practice and qualifying. It was a big disappointment when he crashed in the same corner where many other riders went down. As for Dovizioso, he had a solid race until mid-distance, but he suffered a tremendous loss of grip, with blistering on the rear tyre. We didn?t expect too much from Catalunya, as it hasn?t been our best track in the recent past, but we certainly wish we had done better. We?re looking forward to the IRTA test tomorrow, when we?ll try some new things and see if they?ll help us improve on a track that?s so tough for our bike.?
