Just had a look at my front tyre (Avon Storm ST) and noticed that the sidewall is starting to split in numerous places. Whilst the tyre isn't new, its not that old nor has it covered many miles. My initial thoughts are that it has been run deflated, however this is not the case as only me has ridden it.

Has anyone else experienced this?

That tyre is fubah and def should not be ridden on

Looking closely at the picture it looks like there is crazing all over the place.
Even right down where the tyre is in the rim
Something has badly degraded that tyre !!!

Exposure to petrol will do that.

Or anything else that contains solvents.....but it would have to be repeated or prolonged exposure.

The solvents are absorbed into the rubber and weaken it from the inside out. By the time you see swelling and/or cracking the damage is done.

I have only ever seen splits like that before on a very old tyre, its dangerous probably illegal & needs replacement now !

You say it is 'not that old' but when exactly did you have it fitted/buy it? Checke the fitted date against the manufacture date (on the sidewall) and see the true age. Think a trip to the suppliers may well be in order to complain.
Did similar thing with tyre degredation, after 5 years use with very low mileage, I had on my caravan (sorry must delete that asap) and the manufacturer replaced both the tyres foc.- just had to pay supplier ?10 for fitting and balance. Funnily enough that was also with avon tyres.

I would not ride that bike, the tyre is defective and not serviceable and is in danger of failure by blowing out. The bird is heavy on the front, unusual to have a bike with a front and rear tyre running the same psi (42) but the Bird does.
That is a failure of the tyre, often due to age as already stated and also as stated, due to things put on it, ie some solvents etc

On a bike the last memory you want to have in life when you negotiate that bend is " that forum thread said I shouldn't ride the bike with the tyre like this"!!!!!!

That's is an immediate pg9 police prohibition and mot failure because pics seem to show it down to construction of the tyre!

Common sense says don't ride it, ,let alone the legal side of it!

Some makes of tyres are better than others and some love some makes, personally if I won a set of Avon tyres I'd be very pissd off in life but some on here would disagree!! Even though I don't like em a set of Avons wouldn't normally do that!

Shit rubber can cause unwanted pregnancy and early departure in life!!

Thanks for the responses, I was just looking to see whether this has happened to anyone else using this brand/model. I had no intention of actually riding on it!!

As for age of the tyre, I will have a look at the sidewall and check as I suppose it may have lay a while before it was fitted.

I don't recall riding through any solvent or petrol puddles recently causing the tyre to be exposed to such, and not being to keen on cleaning it haven't applied any that would cause this deterioration I don't think.

I now need to look at some new rubber and decide on which to go for. That in itself can often be a nightmare.

Personally I would stay with the Avons
The new 3d type are little short of amazing !

Clueless in most things
I don't recall seeing a bike tyre such as yours but have seen it on cars and almost all will have been very old and badly stored tyres. Agree with John on the tyre choice at the moment.

After buying a bird with avon storms fitted, decided when the rear was ready for replacement to put another storm on.The bike always wallowed in the corners and I just thought the rear shock was getting ready. The new tyre delaminated within a thousand miles. My mate who was riding behind stopped me and pointed to the rear tyre where lumps had been flying off.Changed to bridgestone 023s and never looked back. No more wallowing .It was a different bike. I know a lot on here swear by avons but after what I experienced never again.

Personally I wouldn't touch another Avon with a barge pole (sorry John) There's been far too many issues with them, their quality control absolutely sucks. I'd guess you've about a 1-5 chance of getting a duff one!!

I've got pics of a Distanzia front off my GS with cracks between every tread block not dissimilar to yours. I've had a front Storm on my previous Bird that had no grip in the wet whatsoever, for which Avon gave me a free set of 3Ds to try, but even that set the rear needed two and a half strips of lead to balance it!! But I still decided to give them another go, bought a set of 3Ds for my Pan last spring, the front was Oval, Gary had to send out a free replacement which I had to then remove my wheel again to take it back to the fitter to get it swapped. But worse of all they made the Pan so unstable. I've just swapped the worn out rear for a part worn Pilotroad and the difference in stability is incredible.
So that's me and Avon done with. I've a couple of part worn very old Azaros which surprisingly are still good, once they've worn out on the bandit that'll be it.

Either Michelin Pilot Road3's or There's quite a few guys on here that love the Pirelli Angel GTs. Don't think I've ever heard a bad word about either. Before the 3Ds I'd had two sets of the Road3s on the Pan and they are utterly brilliant. When I get my latest Bird up n running that'll be on 3s too, cos there already on the painted wheels that'll be going on it. The Pan will get a fresh pair at some point in the summer too.
