Yamaha Prepares for 24-hour Endurance Season-Opener at Le Mans

GMT94 Yamaha and the Monster Energy Yamaha Austria Racing Team (YART) are preparing their all-new YZF-R1s for the 38th edition of the famous 24 Heures Motos at Le Mans this weekend, kicking off the 2015 FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC).

After seven months of waiting, reigning Endurance World Champion team GMT94 Yamaha is eager to start the action at the Circuit Bugatti ? Le Mans. Riders David Checa, Kenny Foray and Mathieu Gines are thrilled to return to the French track where they clinched the 2014 Endurance World Title with an amazing victory last September.

The YART team will also again be taking part in the straining endurance World Championship. Last year they rode a strong race to claim third at the season finale at Le Mans, taking sixth in the overall championship. This year the Austrian team is eager to position themselves as a key protagonist thanks to the new YZF-R1 and its 2015 line-up, consisting of Ivan Silva, Sheridan Morais and Max Neukirchner.

The endurance race of Le Mans is one of the most famous races in the world. The 24 hours of grueling action, together with the often uncertain weather conditions make for a spectacle that race fans don't want to miss out on.

The pre-season test at the Le Mans circuit already saw some consistently fast lap times being dropped by both YART and GMT94, showing a first glimpse of the great potential the YZF-R1 has in the endurance class.

For an extremely intense race such as the Le Mans 24-hours, weight, sturdiness and power are absolutely crucial qualities for endurance racing machines, which is where the YZF-R1 has an advantage.

The 2015 YZF-R1 model is not only smaller and lighter than is predecessors, but it's also more powerful. However, the bikes used in endurance are heavier than the short-distance race bikes because of the lights on the bike for riding in the dark, a bigger tank that holds more fuel and the heavier bodywork for extra durability.

David Checa ? GMT94 Yamaha Rider

"I crashed Tuesday late in the test session. I didn't really understand why because I was on the same pace as usual. Fortunately I didn't get hurt and I will be able to take the start of the race with only a few bruises and a few bumps. I'm still happy to be at Le Mans. We expect a very competitive race."

Kenny Foray ? GMT94 Yamaha Rider

"For now everything works perfectly on the bike. We know we start with a "wise solution" that is to say a stock engine and simple electronics. These are the points on which we will evolve in the future. The Dunlop tires are really great and give us satisfaction. For qualifying we perhaps will not be able to race for the pole position but we have high hopes for the race."

Mathieu Gines ? GMT94 Yamaha Rider

"I love this bike. I just returned from Assen where I was still doing a test session with my IDM team, and when I go back on the GMT94 bike it is still so good. The team had to make a lot of modifications for endurance and we do not feel them at all. The bike remains as light and as good, so I expect the start of 24H impatiently."

Christophe Guyot ? GMT94 Yamaha Team Manager

"We are hoping for a podium, but we had a big crash with David Checa on Tuesday. Luckily he is ok and it is one hundred per cent sure that he will be riding this weekend. The bike is really good and so are the riders. The team is very happy to be here in Le Mans. The only problem is that we are the current World Champions so everybody is sure we will win the race while this is actually not certain. There are not some many spare parts so we have to ask our riders to take care this first race, because in order to win the championship, it's important we finish. Though it's already very fast, we are sure that the bike will be even faster at the next race."

Ivan Silva ? YART rider

"I'm very happy that I belong to the YART team. It's a long weekend and I hope everything with the bike will remain this good and we won't run into any problems. The other riders are great so with our team's infrastructure we can fight for the victory. We are fast and determined and now we only have to work hard to get the win."

Max Neukirchner ? YART rider

"I feel really good and I've been doing a lot of fitness training during the winter for the 24H race. It's a very special race for me, because Le Mans is of course very famous and I am in a really good team and my teammates, Sheridan Morais and Ivan Silva, are good. There was a test at Le Mans two weeks ago and we were the strongest team and yesterday we were training all day and again we were the strongest. We are quite fast, but with 24H of racing you need a bit of luck to get onto the podium. I look forward to get a good position, if we don't get any technical problems."

Mandy Kainz - YART Team Manager

"The preparation of the bike is a bit of a tough story because we arrived quite late at the Le Mans circuit. We are working hard to finish the bike, but we are quite confident because the bike is very fast and the riders are in perfect harmony, so I think we have a very strong package for the weekend."

Yamaha Sets New Track Lap Record in Le Mans

The Monster Energy Yamaha Austria Racing Team (YART) and GMT94 Yamaha are ready for tomorrow's 24 heures Moto at Le Mans. They kicked off the 2015 FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC) by qualifying in second and sixth place respectively today.

Having displayed their blistering pace during the first qualifying session yesterday, when they clocked the second fastest time in the combined classification, the YART team took their pace to yet another level today, the breaking new fastest ever lap record for Le Mans by 0,248s.

Max Neukirchner was the first rider of the Austrian team to take the number 7 YZF-R1 to the Circuit Bugatti - Le Mans in qualifying two. The German set the tone by clocking a 1'36.969 for second place, 0,073s off the front in the classification of the first riders.

Second rider Ivan Silva followed in his teammates footsteps by posting a 1'38.061, 0,231s off the front for third place in his session.

The second qualifying was concluded with Sheridan Morais, leading the third rider qualifying session with a 1'37.935 when, with eight minutes on the clock, the session was red flagged. However, the South African rider kept his head cool. Already in the pits he seized the moment to get some clear track and soon posted a new track lap record of 1'36.578, increasing his lead in the classification of the third riders to 1,328s.

Combined the YART team members rode an average time of 1'37.202 and scored second place in the combined qualifying sessions classification, just 0,014s from pole.

Raining World Champion team, GMT94 Yamaha, was also able to make a big step today.

Though riding with a knee injury, sustained by a crash during Tuesday's test, David Checa was able to successfully complete the second qualifying session with eighth place. He posted 1'39.108 lap, 2.210s off the lead in the classification of the first riders.

Kenny Foray took over the number 94 YZF-R1 from his teammate and dropped a fifth fastest time of 1'38.356, 0,526s from the second rider session leader.

Mathieu Gines was the last rider of the French team to qualify. He rode a strong stint and, despite a short interruption of the third rider session, still managed an 1'38.073, claiming third in the third riders classification, 1,495s off the front.

GMT94 hold sixth place in the combined qualifying standings, having rode an average time of 1'38.466.

After today's positive results, both teams look forward to tomorrow when the 24 hours of non-stop racing action will start at 3pm local track time.

Max Neukirchner - Monster Energy Yamaha YART rider

"We are really happy with the results. All three of the riders are really fast and we have a real good team. Of course you need a little luck when you ride a 24 hours race, but we feel good and all riders have top level of fitness, so I think we will have a good race tomorrow."

Ivan Silva
Ivan Silva - Monster Energy Yamaha YART rider

"As a team we are quite happy with the results and for myself I'm happy with my lap times. I'm very happy with the bike. It allows me to ride very consistently, also in the night. We have a real good package, which could bring us victory, but of course you always need a bit of luck on your side."

Sheridan Morais - Monster Energy Yamaha YART rider

"Today was really good, after yesterday we knew all the riders, including Damian our spare rider, were very fast. It was a matter of getting a clear road, because there is so much traffic. When I was in for a tyre change there was a red flag situation, which was fortunate for me, because I then managed to get quite a clear lap and ride a really good time. The ideal time would be a lot faster, but we were far ahead of everybody else and I'm very happy for this. I wish my teammates could have had some clear track also, because I think then we would definitely have gotten pole position. Second or first doesn't really matter though, because it's only 2 metres difference at the start. I'm very, very happy. On a brand new bike we did a very good job."

Mandy Kainz ? Monster Energy Yamaha YART Team Manager

"We were told we were on pole, although I thought weren't. As it turned out they made an error and we are in second place. Nevertheless today was quite a good day for us, we could show a good pace. We were lucky with the traffic, so we could manage the lap times we expected and broke the Endurance track record. It's really exciting when you realise that this is more or less a stock bike and that with small modifications it can do lap times like this. What Sheridan did today with extreme traffic of 60 bikes on track is incredible. His time is close to three seconds off the pace of Marc Marquez in the MotoGP, which is incredible. Sheridan and this bike fit perfectly together; they love each other and are in perfect harmony, so they enjoy the ride and go very fast."

David Checa ? GMT94 Yamaha rider

"I crashed on the first day of testing and hurt my leg. Every day it goes a bit better, but still I'm struggling a little. We tried some things on the bike, but I didn't feel very confident. My teammates improved a little, which is good. If the race had been a day later it would have been better for me. I can't be happy with qualifying, because I'm not a 100%, but I know we have a good rhythm for the race, without having to push to the limit, so for me it's ok. I don't know what tomorrow will bring. The main thing is that we all do our best during 24 hours, like we usually do. Sometimes the fastest team doesn't win the race, but the most intelligent or the luckiest team. Last year we won the championship without winning a race. We know this bike is completely new and we need more information to improve. It's a really good bike but we have not enough data to be on the same level as last year right away, but step by step we will arrive."

Kenny Foray ? GMT94 Yamaha rider

"Yesterday was difficult, because David crashed in the first qualification and after that it was a little bit hard for Mathieu and me to ride, because the bike was not ready. We tested a lot of things; new parts and a new tyre. Today's qualification was ok because, although they predicted rain the track was dry. The feeling with the bike was better and we could push a little more to improve our lap time a little. Still we are not quite satisfied with our lap times, but the race will be different. The race is 24 hours and we feel that we can do something good. You never know what's going to happen during the race and maybe a 1'39 or 1'40 can even win the race. We will see, we are ready for the race!"

Mathieu Gines ? GMT94 Yamaha rider

"Today was better than yesterday, because I won a half of a second in the qualification and that's better for us. The best part was last night during the night practice, when the feeling was even better, so I think we have a really good bike for the 24 hours moto. Being fast in qualifying was not our strategy, we work for the race. Results in Q1 weren't very good, but during night practice we were third or fourth, so the strategy for the race is very good."

Christophe Guyot - GMT94 Yamaha Team Manager

"I'm satisfied. Only David didn't improve because of his crash yesterday. Of course, if he was able to do the same lap times as Kenny and Mathieu it would be even better, but I am very happy. The bike is working well and the riders are confident and we are fast with the race tyre so we can do something great. Sometimes racing can be strange, sometimes you can be happy with a sixth or seventh place and sometimes you are second and not happy, that's racing. Yesterday it was difficult and now all our riders are in 1'38 and our pace can be good. Maybe not enough to win, I don't know, but we can do something very well. We want to play the championship, but first we need to finish the race."

Team Suzuki Press Office ? April 19.
Suzuki Endurance Racing Team has stormed to a dominating victory at the opening round of the 2015 Endurance World Championship, the 38th Le Mans 24-Hour, at Circuit Bugatti in France today.

Team riders Vincent Philippe, Anthony Delhalle and new member Etienne Masson overcame a high-speed slide-off by Delhalle just over an hour into the event, to take the lead after five hours and eventually cross the finish line seven laps ahead of nearest rivals and early race leaders SRC Kawasaki?s Gregory Leblanc, Matthieu Lagrive and Fabien Foret.

After qualifying fourth on the grid, SERT set a blistering and consistent pace throughout, taking 26 well-orchestrated pit-stops during 24-hours of close and intense racing between the 56 entered teams, completing a total of 833 laps.

Suzuki?s Junior Team LMS, which is run from the same SERT headquarters at Le Mans, also topped the Superstock podium with team riders Baptiste Guittet, Gregg Black and Roman Maitre claiming fourth overall against the EWC teams.

Yamaha Finishes Fifth at Le Mans 24H Moto

Reigning World Champion?s GMT94 Yamaha clinched fifth today in the challenging Le Mans 24H hours Moto, the opening round of 2015 FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC).

GMT94 Yamaha?s performance at the famous 24 Heures Motos du Mans, underlined the notion that consistency in riding and camaraderie between teammates are key elements for endurance racing.

David Checa was originally scheduled to take part in the traditional starting procedure of riders sprinting over the starting grid to get to their bikes. However, having sustained a leg injury in a crash on Tuesday, he was unable to run and had teammate Kenny Foray take his place.

Not being used to opening the racing action, the Frenchman took some laps to get a feel for the Circuit Bugatti - Le Mans track, but soon found his rhythm. Showing his determination, Foray rode from 24th to 11th in the rankings before handing the number 94 YZF-R1 over to Mathieu Gines, who was followed by Checa.

Thanks to consistent and smart riding, the GMT94 team enjoyed a strong first part of the race. They climbed up to third place in the time sheets before the eight-hour mark, granting them their first eight points of the championship.

However, as the race progressed it became clear that Checa?s injury was too serious for him to complete all his planned stints and it was soon decided that his teammates would ride double stints during the night to reduce his exertion.

After having completed 16 hours of non-stop racing, the amicable solidarity of the GMT94 team was rewarded with another four points as they held seventh place.

Though exhaustion took a toll on Foray and Gines as daylight broke, they still managed to finish the first race of the season in fifth place. This result brings their points total up to 33, allowing them to take fifth position in the overall championship standings.

The Monster Energy Yamaha YART team also displayed the incredible potential that the YZF-R1 has for the endurance class, the team were contenders for the victory over the first half of the race, but were later forced to retire due to a technical issue.

Max Neukirchner was the first rider of the Austrian team to take to the track and wasted no time joining a leading group of four and taking off with them at the front. It wasn?t long before the German took over the third spot, which he held until he handed the YZF-R1 over to the second rider Ivan Silva.

Similar to his teammate, the Spanish rider showed his eagerness to arrive at the front. Silva momentarily led the race, before he came back to the pits to switch places with third rider ? and, as of this week, new Endurance Le Mans lap record holder - Sheridan Morais.

The YART team set the pace over the first eight hours, with a 1?38.381 fastest race lap. Riding in second place earned them nine points and as they started the 13th hour they were closing in on the frontrunner. It seemed that the team, led by Mandy Kainz, was set to compete for victory, but after 13h46 the team had to withdraw from the race due to a technical issue..

Despite this misfortune the team still picked up nine valuable point and data. They now hold 15th place in the championship standings and look forward to come back with an even stronger package at the next race in Suzuka, Japan, 25th and 26th of July.

David Checa
GMT94 Yamaha rider

"It was a tough weekend for me, because I had the crash on Tuesday. I?m really grateful for my teammates, because they did a really good job. The podium was an option, but unfortunately we couldn?t make it happen. The next race, the bike will be even better and maybe then we can aim for the win."

Kenny Foray
GMT94 Yamaha rider

"It was a very special weekend. It wasn?t great timing for David to get injured because to end the race with just two riders is too difficult. But that?s what endurance is like. I?m a little disappointed for the team, because they have been working hard all winter and in the end there was no podium to repay them. Maybe next time we can win, the championship is long."

Mathieu Gines
GMT94 Yamaha rider

"It was difficult, because we were racing with only two and a half riders, because David is injured and couldn?t ride as much. Kenny and I pushed extra. Normally we could have finished higher, but we had some small problems. I am happy about finishing the first race and taking points for the championship. I think it will be good for the next race."
Mathieu Gines

Christophe Guyot - GMT94 Yamaha Team Manager

"This first weekend was really good for the bike. We were very good overall, but had some small issues. Of course David wasn?t in top condition, because of his crash and that was a problem too. We have to look at the positive things in this race; we finished fifth and now we hold fifth place overall in the championship. The chassis and the engine of the YZF-R1 are great so we look forward to the next race."

Max Neukirchner
Monster Energy Yamaha YART rider

"We had some technical problems and were not able to finish the race. For us this was very unfortunate, because on track we were the fastest. But that?s racing in a 24 hour race; sometimes you?re lucky and sometimes you not. We?re looking forward to the next race, because we know that we have a very strong team and the bike is great, so we?ll see what happens."

Ivan Silva
Monster Energy Yamaha YART rider

"It's a pity, because I felt very good with the bike and tyres, but in races with such a high level as this one, everything is possible. We hope to have better luck in the next race. I want to thank the team and the fans that came to support us for everything."

Sheridan Morais
Monster Energy Yamaha YART rider

"It?s been really great. The team did a lot of hard work, which allowed us to set really fast lap times and have good stints. This weekend we were the team to beat and that?s very impressive for a first weekend. I think we have a big future with this bike and with the team."

Mandy Kainz - Monster Energy Yamaha YART Team Manager

"The weekend ended quite harshly as we had to retire because of a technical issue. It?s probably just a small thing, but we couldn?t finish the race because of it. All in all the upside from this weekend is that we can see that we were very competitive and were competing for victory. Let?s get ready for the next race."

Eric De Seynes - Operational Director Yamaha Motor Europe

"First of all the bike is definitely well made. We have demonstrated that the bike was the fastest during practice and all through the first part of the race. Immediately YART was able to compete at the front. I discussed with Mandy and all the riders that we would keep a minimum of one second in our hands, so that we?d be sure. We didn?t want to risk a crash and even with this mentality we were fighting for the lead from second position. GMT did a very good job, because from the beginning the setting of the bike was really for endurance and the rhythm of the team was good enough to be in the top 4- 5. So a very steady race. All the issues we encountered with the bike were minor things but it cost us the podium. The endurance championship has two types of races. 8 hours and 24 hours. We knew that starting the season with a 24 hour race would be tougher, but if you realize that, after 8 hours we were in second and fourth position, then that?s a great result for a new bike entering the World Endurance Championship. We can be very proud of the results. It?s like when a new baby takes it?s first steps. We fished fifth and are fourth in the Championship standing overall. We got the points, we got the position and we learned a lot. We have to thank the engineers who developed the bike. The championship is very mature and being on that level of performance in the first race is very promising. We are very optimistic and trust in the future wins of the bike. All the teams and riders are very happy with the bike and feel very confident racing it. We have to work, fight and win."

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. Announces YAMAHA FACTORY RACING TEAM Rider Line-up at the Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. is proud to announce that the YAMAHA FACTORY RACING TEAM will be competing in the 38th "Coca-Cola Zero" Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race, which is to be held at Suzuka Circuit in Mie Prefecture from July 23 to 26, 2015. This will be the first time since 2002 that Yamaha has fielded a factory team for this prestigious race.

The team's rider line-up will consist of reigning JSB1000 class champion of the All Japan Road Race Championship Katsuyuki Nakasuga and MotoGP riders Pol Espargar? and Bradley Smith. They will ride a factory machine based on the new YZF-R1 and specially developed for competition in the Suzuka 8 Hours as they set out to win Yamaha its first victory in this event in 19 years and its fifth in the race's history.

Nakasuga is one of the top Yamaha riders in Japan and is currently in contention to win an unprecedented fourth consecutive title in the premier class of the All Japan Road Race Championship. He has raced in the Suzuka 8 Hours seven times before, with a best result of fourth place in 2014

Espargar? and Smith will be entering the Suzuka 8 Hours for the first time and will bring to the challenge their vast experience in the world's premier motorcycle road racing category, MotoGP. They finished the 2014 MotoGP season ranked 6th and 8th, respectively.

Serving as team manager will be Wataru Yoshikawa, the manager of the YAMAHA FACTORY RACING TEAM in the All Japan Road Race Championship. Encouraged by the cheers of Yamaha fans, the team members, riders and sponsors will pull together as they aim for a coveted victory at the Suzuka 8 Hours.

Yamaha Motor participates in racing activities around the world under three basic policies: branding, feedback of technology and promotional activities. This season, Yamaha Motor is once again fielding factory teams in three All Japan championships (road racing, motocross and trials) and, with the introduction of the new YZF-R1, new programs have been launched to further stimulate its racing activities in countries around the world.

Factory participation in this year's Suzuka 8 Hours is one example of these racing activities, and through this participation Yamaha Motor seeks to prove the performance potential of the new YZF-R1 while at the same time gaining technological expertise, promoting development of human resources and sharing the excitement of rewarding experiences in motorsport as an embodiment of the "Revs your Heart" brand slogan.

Katsuyuki Nakasuga - Rider

"This season I am serving as a factory rider for the first time in an attempt to be the first rider ever to win four consecutive titles in the premier class of the All Japan Road Race Championship, while using the new YZF-R1. Now I am very glad that I am being given another new challenge of competing on the factory team in the Suzuka 8 Hours, which I am excited about like never before. I am also looking forward to competing together with two such outstanding riders as [Pol] Espargar? and [Bradley] Smith, and I feel this will be a good opportunity for me to improve my racing skills. Of course, I will be going for nothing less than the win. I will work together with the team to show that the new YZF-R1 is the fastest machine on the track, and I will do my best to bring an experience of the greatest possible Kando* to the fans that have waited so long for the comeback of the Yamaha factory team and a Suzuka 8 Hours victory. I hope everyone will come to the circuit during race week to cheer us on."

Pol Espargar? - Rider

"I am really happy that Yamaha has chosen me to represent them at one of the most famous motorsport events, which is the Suzuka 8 Hour race. I feel honoured to take part in it, but there will be a lot to learn. I am under no illusion that it will be easy as I have never raced in an endurance event before and I don't know the YZF-R1, even though a lot of people speak very highly about it. In addition, the MotoGP calendar is very demanding and we will have to work through the training for the event, in between the races. Therefore, we need to work as much as possible in order to be prepared for the race, but I'm very excited to get this opportunity. Moreover, it will be nice to work with Bradley as a partner where we will fight together, instead of against each other. I think we will complement each other very well and have a great time. The only thing is that neither of us know the Suzuka track, so I hope Nakasuga-san can help us with everything, which includes the circuit, the bike and the correct strategies that we need to have a successful eight hour race. It will be special and we will do our best to reward the faith that Yamaha has put in us."

Bradley Smith - Rider

"Firstly, I want to give Yamaha a massive thank you for considering me to be part of their Suzuka 8 Hour team, which is a legendary event. I'm looking forward to trying a new form of motorcycle racing and even more so along with my MotoGP teammate Pol and Katsuyuki Nakasuga, who has a strong record at this special race. I think it will be an unforgettable event and it will add another chapter to my life with Yamaha. I'm also very excited to try the new Yamaha YZF-R1, which I have heard a lot about and it will be really great to finally get the opportunity to ride it. Of course, I will take this event very seriously as we are going to be part of the official Factory Team effort, so I will head to Japan with the full intention of getting a high scoring result for Yamaha."

Wataru Yoshikawa - Team Manager

"This time we have assembled a great team that really has me personally very excited. [Katsuyuki] Nakasuga is a rider with a wealth of experience racing at Suzuka Circuit and in the Suzuka 8 Hours, and in addition to running fast times, we will need his presence as a team leader to help propel us to victory. A critical point for our success will be to have [Pol] Espargar? and [Bradley] Smith learn from Nakasuga's Suzuka experience and then deliver the performances that they are capable of as such outstanding riders. To do this, we will need to supply them with a highly competitive machine that they will feel good riding on, and to create an environment that enables them to concentrate fully on their racing. The Suzuka 8 Hours is a very tough race, but we are determined to win it and show that we are the strongest team of all. To win, it is also vital that we have the support of the fans. Let's all strive together to get the victory and share the Kando that it will surely bring."

LOWES & WATERS JOIN YOSHIMURA SUZUKI FOR SUZUKA

Voltcom Crescent Suzuki?s Alex Lowes and Bennetts Suzuki BSB rider Josh Waters will race for the Yoshimura Suzuki Shell ADVANCE Racing team at next month?s 38th Coca-Cola Zero Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race in Japan.

The British and Australian riders will join Japanese Takuya Tsuda on the #12 Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 for the iconic event at Suzuka Circuit on July 26th

Historically a powerhouse of talent from the top class of motorcycle racing ? including former winners Colin Edwards, Carlos Checa, Yukio Kagayama and Valentino Rossi ? this year?s event is expected to be no different. Casey Stoner is set to join past two-year victor and current WSBK rider, Michael van der Mark, with Pol Espargar? and Bradley Smith also already announcing their participation.

2015 sees Lowes switching places with his current WSBK team-mate Randy de Puniet, who achieved a second place finish as part of the #34 Yoshimura Suzuki Shell Advance team last year.

Alex Lowes:

"I'm really looking forward to challenging myself at the iconic 8 Hour race and working with the Yoshimura Suzuki team. They are a great support to us in the World Superbike Championship and I'm really excited to see how they do things.

?The Suzuka track is a favourite amongst many riders and while it's going to be a lot for me to learn, I'm really excited about the opportunity. It's going to be an interesting challenge especially with the test and race each side of the Laguna Seca WSBK round in July but think I can go and do a good job.

?I'm looking forward to getting over to Japan, getting started and representing the Voltcom Crescent Suzuki and Yoshimura partnership for my first endurance race."

Josh Waters:

?I'm very excited to be riding for Yoshimura Suzuki at this year?s Suzuka 8 hour. This is my fourth time riding for the team so I know them very well.

?My team mates are both great riders who I am looking forward to working with.
The Suzuka 8 hour event is extremely hard, very hot and changing weather conditions. Last year we were close to victory, so we will try our hardest to get the best possible result in this year?s race.?

Yohei Kato ? Yoshimura Team Manager:

?Yoshimura Suzuki Shell ADVANCE Racing team participates in the 38th Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race with Takuya Tsuda, Alex Lowes and Josh Waters. We are aiming for the fifth victory for the team and will fight with these brilliant riders.

?There have already been announcements from other top teams and these rivals look very tough and strong. It is still great to see the factory teams come back to this event with GP riders and it reminds me of the Suzuka 8 H race in the 80's and 90's!

?We, Yoshimura Suzuki Shell ADVANCE Racing team, have been developing the Suzuki GSX-R1000 with its potential using our know-how and we are going to fight against these factory teams. Racing at the Suzuka 8 Hours is the most important event in our history and it keeps us having the ?Challenging Sprit?. It's never been easy to win the race, but we will do our best with the support of the Yoshimura fans.?

Yamaha Hunts for Glory at Suzuka 8 Hours

Motorsport fans can draw a sigh of relief, after waiting for more than three months the second round of the 2015 FIM Endurance World Championship is about to kick off at the famous Suzuka Circuit in Mie Prefecture, 23-26 July.

All eyes are on Yamaha, which similar to last year will be represented by three top teams. Reigning World Champions GMT94 Yamaha, the Monster Energy Yamaha Austria Racing Team and a special Factory team, especially set up for competition in the Suzuka 8 Hours, are in Japan for the 38th edition of the "Coca-Cola Zero" Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race and can't wait for the prestigious event to start.

Following an impressive test session that saw them lead the scoreboard, race fans and media across the world are looking forward to seeing the Yamaha Factory Racing Team in action, with a line-up consisting of All Japan Road Race Champion Katsuyuki Nakasuga and MotoGP riders Pol Espargar? and Bradley Smith.

Nakasuga is one of the top Yamaha riders in Japan and his vast experience at the Suzuka circuit with the Yamaha YZF-R1 will be of great help to Espargar? and Smith who will make their first appearance in the Endurance racing scene.

Riding a factory machine specially built to compete in the Suzuka 8 Hours, they hope to give Yamaha its first victory in this event in 19 years and its fifth in the race's history.

However, the factory team is not the only Yamaha team with promise. As one of the racing teams to competing throughout the entire Endurance World Championship season, GMT94 Yamaha has a lot of experience and has not been sitting still. Since the end of the first round in Le Mans, the French team have put in place a lighter and lower fuel tank and improved the electronics to be fully prepared for the Suzuka challenge.

Last year's drama-filled Suzuka 8 Hours race saw GMT take the lead of the World Endurance Championship after the start was delayed due to heavy rain, leaving the race reduced to just under seven hours. David Checa had a less than perfect opening, but he and his teammates Kenny Foray and Mathieu Gines made a strong recovery to take a respectable ninth place at the line.

This year they hope to repeat their previous successes at the Japanese circuit of a second place in 2013 and a third place podium finish in 2012 in order to move up from fourth place in the standings and defend their World Championship title.

The Monster Energy Yamaha Austria Racing Team (YART) has also been working hard and looks forward to seeing Broc Parkes return, as he fills in for the injured Max Neukirchner.

Parkes gave a brave performance in last year's race as a part of the YSP team, alongside Nakasuga and Australian rider Joshua Brookes, to finish the Suzuka race just off the podium in fourth position.

This year the Australian rider will be joined by Sheridan Morais and Iv?n Silva as they set out to secure a top result and move up from 15th place in the championship standings.

Katsuyuki Nakasuga - Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider

"This season I am serving as a factory rider for the first time in an attempt to be the first rider ever to win four consecutive titles in the premier class of the All Japan Road Race Championship, while using the new YZF-R1. I am very glad that I am being given another new challenge of competing on the factory team in the Suzuka 8 Hours, which I am excited about like never before. I am also looking forward to competing together with two such outstanding riders as Pol Espargar? and Bradley Smith, and I feel this will be a good opportunity for me to improve my racing skills. Of course, I will be going for nothing less than the win. I will work to bring an experience of the greatest possible Kando* to the fans that have waited so long for the comeback of the Yamaha factory team and a Suzuka 8 Hours victory. I hope everyone will come to the circuit during race week to cheer us on."

Bradley Smith - Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider

"After having the first test in Suzuka and getting my first try on the new YZF-R1 I've gotten very excited. It's great to work alongside Pol and Nakasuga. I believe Yamaha Motor CO., Ltd. have done a great job working with Nakasuga whilst preparing the bike. We've already seen such a strong performance in the Japanese Superbike race and having ridden the bike in rainy conditions I can say that it's going to be really competitive. That puts a bit more pressure on us, because the bike is really strong and the team is doing great work, so we have to put our objective on winning this race. We know that endurance racing can be tough, so as a minimum we have to be on the podium, but I would very much like to win this race and take the trophy home to Iwata and give it to everybody there at YMC."

Pol Espargar? - Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider

"Even though the weather conditions didn't help us a lot, I think that the first Suzuka test we did after the Assen race was positive. This was mainly because of the bike, which is the most important thing and I was really impressed with the performance of the YZF-R1, it's so similar to my MotoGP YZR-M1! I also felt really comfortable with the Bridgestone tyres that we are going to use and I really liked the track as well, I think that Suzuka is a real motorbike circuit. We only rode a few laps in dry conditions and some more in the wet, but it's still not enough to understand what we will be able to do in the race, although the first impressions are good. Another important point is the work we that did as a team, which was a new experience for me. Together with Bradley, we worked in trying to find the best setting for the bike and understanding how our riding styles are different and also with Nakasuga. At this point we must say that he is the team leader, as he is the fastest and the most experienced out of us three with bike and track. Suzuka is the kind of circuit that you need to ride a lot of kilometres on in order to understand all of its secrets. I'm really looking forward to beginning the race. I want Yamaha to be proud of our work".

Wataru Yoshikawa - Yamaha Factory Racing Team Team Manager

"This time we have assembled a great team that really has me personally very excited. Katsuyuki Nakasuga is a rider with a wealth of experience racing at Suzuka Circuit and in the Suzuka 8 Hours, and in addition to running fast times, we will need his presence as a team leader to help propel us to victory. A critical point for our success will be to have Pol Espargar? and Bradley Smith learn from Nakasuga's Suzuka experience and then deliver the performances that they are capable of as such outstanding riders. Let's all strive together to get the victory and share the Kando* that it will surely bring."

David Checa - GMT94 Yamaha rider

"We have a new package of tyres and bike in Suzuka. We knew that we were really good here before and we did well to get onto the podium two years ago. We will have to see, but we will try to achieve the same this year. My injury has healed and my leg is perfect again. At the last rounds in the French championship I was fighting for the victory so the leg is good and our bike is good. We eagerly await Suzuka, because the level there is really high and we will work as hard as we can to be at the top."

Christophe Guyot - GMT94 Yamaha Team Manager

"Our bike has improved a lot and is completely different from Le Mans, with a new fuel tank and electronics. Many things will be a lot better because for Le Mans it was very difficult for us to be ready in time, and we weren't so we finished in fifth position, but I'm sure we can expect to do a very good race in Suzuka. Of course there will be a lot of top factory bikes in Japan, but I still think it's possible for us to finish between fifth and eighth. With a bit of luck anything could happen, you never know with endurance. At least the condition of the riders is perfect. David Checa is in very good shape and very fast now and at a 100%. Since the last race it's been hard for him to recover, but now he's ok. We are leading the French Championship with Kenny Foray and also David has been fast on the YZF-R1 recently. Mathieu Gines is leading the IDM Superstock 1000 class with Yamaha, so the bike and riders are very fast. They are motivated and excited to go to Suzuka. We only went to the pre-race test with David and Kenny, because Mathieu had some testing to do in Germany. Having two riders is also better when you have many things to test. Suzuka is very special, with a lot of fast riders, so our strategy is to set up the bike perfectly for David and Kenny, as it's impossible to have three men at the absolute maximum of potential and we want to make sure we don't lose out on any points."

Sheridan Morais - Monster Energy Yamaha Austria Racing Team rider

"My build up for the Suzuka 8 hour started upon signing for Team Monster Energy YART. This has been a race that I always heard of as a kid and it gained my attention a lot more when I started racing in the World Championship. Obviously we are focused on our Championship which consists of four rounds in total but this is the stand out race by a long way.
The two-day test was ruled by bad weather so of the five sessions only one of them was dry and we definitely made the best of it. Having never ridden at Suzuka before, I was happy enough to have completed the session in eighth place and we worked well enough to already beat the team's best time from last year by a half of a second. We had plenty of wet riding which was much needed and again we made great steps forward. I am loving our YZF-R1 and have not ridden "her" since the Le Mans 24 hour so getting back on the gas was such a sweet reward to my training and preparations."

Mandy Kainz - Monster Energy Yamaha Austria Racing Team Team Manager

"The pre-race test was quite good for us. It's already the 12th time for us doing the Suzuka race, and in the past we had two teams and ran the factory's team in Suzuka. This year we will just concentrate on the #7 bike, which is ready and the rider's that will be riding it are Sheridan Morais, Iv?n Silva and Broc Parkes. Despite the rainy experience at the test of Suzuka, we were really surprised of the performance of the tyres, which is really good. We tested them with Iv?n and Sheridan in the official pre-race test and that also gave the riders an opportunity to learn the track, but unfortunately those days were really wet. We had a lot of rain and were able to do just a few dry laps, but those few lap times were really fast, so the performance of our tyres and bike is great. Broc still needs to test, because he suffered from arm-pump and had an operation. Our bike's engine performance has improved and we have a few horsepower more than in Le Mans, so we have a stronger bike. I am looking forward to the race and I am confident that we can finish this race at the top."

Prestigious Suzuka 8hour beckons for Kawasaki teams

The Suzuka circuit in Japan is one of the most iconic motorsport venues in the world, and the prestigious 8hours race, running this weekend, is the highlight of the calendar. The 38th ?Coca Cola Zero? Suzuka 8hours FIM Endurance World Championship round is set to be a hotly contested race, with stars from MotoGP and World Superbikes lining up against the regular Endurance competitors and factory ?wildcards?.

Kawasaki will enjoy a strong presence at the event, with regular Endurance World Championship competitors Team SRC Kawasaki leading the way. Following a podium at the Le Mans 24 hour race, SRC riders Gregory Leblanc, Matthieu Lagrive and Fabien Foret head to Japan eager to repeat that feat. Fellow Kawasaki EWC competitors, Team Bolliger Switzerland will be lining up on the grid with Roman Stamm, Daniel Sutter and Nicolas Salchaud (in place of the injured Horst Saiger).
After making their return last year, the domestic Kawasaki squad called Team Green are also competing again in 2015, with a three rider team consisting of Japanese stars Akira Yanagawa and Kazuki Watanabe plus talented Indonesian rider Haji Ahmed Yudhistira.
For the big four Japanese motorcycle manufacturers, the Suzuka 8hours race is one of the biggest events of the year. Although nowadays the rules restrict how much development can go into the machines, there was a time when ?full factory? machines were built specifically for the event. With money no object, the bikes of old were full of magnesium, titanium and carbon fibre parts and would weigh in at an incredible 150kg. The 8Hours is undergoing a resurgence and the 2014 event saw 110,000 fans visit across the four day festival.
In 1993, the same year he won the World Superbike title for Kawasaki, Scott Russell and team mate Aaron Slight took a dominant victory aboard the ZX-7R to secure Kawasaki?s only 8Hours win to date.
Endurance Racing is an important part of Kawasaki?s racing heritage winning the World Championship with riders such as Raymond Roche, Carl Fogarty, Terry Rymer and Alex Viera.
In 1993, the same year he won the World Superbike title for Kawasaki, Scott Russell and team mate Aaron Slight took a dominant victory aboard the ZX-7R to secure Kawasaki?s only 8Hours win to date. More recently the SRC Kawasaki team have won the Le Mans 24HR and Bol D'Or a total of seven times since 2010.
Steve Guttridge, Racing Manager for Kawasaki Motors Europe said, ?The Suzuka 8Hours event is one of the biggest racing highlights of the year. This massive event always produces some fantastic racing and we are particularly excited to see how our regular endurance competitors such as our officially supported team SRC and Team Bolliger will fare around the Suzuka circuit, as well as Team Green, who now have a full year of experience under their belt.?

Yamaha Factory Racing Team Sets the Pace at First Practice Session in Suzuka
The Yamaha Factory Racing Team has a dream start and come forth as a key protagonist at the first day of the 38th "Coca-Cola Zero" Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race weekend.

Riders Katsuyuki Nakasuga, Pol Espargar? and Bradley Smith hit the ground running in the first one and half hour session with a very stable basis set-up and despite difficult conditions, they soon rose to a provisional first place, before dropping back to third.

The second session saw more of the same from the new, yet solid team. They needed only a few laps around Suzuka Circuit to get used to the changed track conditions before scorching to the top of the standings with a strong 2'07.282.

Monster Energy Yamaha Austria Racing Team (YART) and reigning World Champion GMT94 Yamaha faced some challenges during their first day at the Suzuka 8 Hours weekend, but also booked great progess.

YART showed the incredible potential of the YZF-R1 in the morning, when rider Broc Parkes, Sheridan Morais and Iv?n Silva rode the racing machine to a strong third place in mixed conditions.

The grip at the Suzuka Circuit went down a little in the afternoon, causing the bike's rear wheel to spin, but this was not a problem for the vastly experienced team and they climbed to tenth place in the afternoon session, 4.041s from the Yamaha Factory Racing Team.

In an effort to keep their prestigious FIM Endurance World Championship title campaign on track, GMT94 has made various changes to their YZF-R1 since the previous race in Le Mans and picked the fruits of their labour today.

Despite being in Group B, which enjoyed slightly less fortunate weather, and suffering a crash in the first private practice the French team did well to claim seventh. The minor complications did not get the team's spirit down and in the second session they were immediately back on the pace to claim fourth, 0,470s from the front, in their slot.

Tomorrow the Yamaha teams will be back on track for the free practice and qualifying sessions, starting at 8AM, track time.

Katsuyuki Nakasuga - Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider

"From (last week's) pre-race tests, I have been working on the machine set-up and we have had Pol [Espargaro] and Bradley [Smith] concentrating on getting used to the Suzuka track and the machine. We have done this because we think it is best from the team's standpoint. The riding position is set according to my preferences, but with regard to the machine settings, since I have been doing development work on the MotoGP machine, we know a lot about the preferences of Pol and Bradley. So, we have been working on the set-up with those preferences in mind, and in fact they both appear to be riding it without feeling any significant problems. This morning's practice was in the rain, but the afternoon session was run on a dry track and all three of us were able to get good times. So, we were able to end the first day of practice feeling good about the way things are going. Still, even though we know that Pol and Bradley are MotoGP riders of the highest level, we can't help but be impressed by the fact that after only having run here at Suzuka a few times, they are already recording lap times in the 2'07 range. We three riders all respect each other and have all taken our roles on the team to heart. And, with their speed and me being pulled along by them, I feel an amazing synergistic effect. The team is undoubtedly at a very high level."

Pol Espargar? - Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider

"I think I made good progress. The bike was very good and we improved some points we found during the test. I think today the track was competitive, because it wasn't really hot or slippery. I did the fastest lap time today, so the bike and the team are working well and it all looks really good. I have some confidence, but the race is another thing; in the tests you can make mistakes without many consequences, but in the race you have to be consistent and pay a lot of attention to make sure you don't crash, as afterall this is a team. The YZF-R1 gives us no excuses as riders, it's working so good and so are the team. All my teammates are really fast and our pace is good for the race, I can't ask for anything more. I have a good feeling with the bike. It's not easy to ride with so many riders on the track, but we are adapting to this other type of racing. It's a characteristic of this race that there are many riders on the track and if we want to win, we have to compete with them and we are learning to overtake and not be too aggressive and crash, but overtake them fast. Nakasuga set up the base setting and he did a really good job. Bradley and I gave a little bit of input, coming from MotoGP, thinking this could help a little bit, but mainly Nakasuga did the job as he is always riding the bike. Maybe the one with the most challenges is Bradley, because he is tall, while Nakasuga and I are of similar height and weight. Bradley weighs about the same, but is a little bit taller, for sure his style is a bit different, but it was no problem, he is adapting really well and is fast like me. The balance of the team is really good and we all have the same pace and riding similar lap times and it's all really good."

Bradley Smith - Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider

"Today was good. I think it was good to train in the rain again this morning, because we tested here in the wet on the first two days of the first test and it was nice to refresh our memories, also to gain a little bit of information in case it does rain on raceday. We got a few different ideas on settings and tyre strategy in case it does rain, that was interesting. In this afternoon the conditions were really good with the lower temperature on the racetrack. It looks like we have a more or less clear which direction to go for with the race tyres, which is also good. Obviously we have to confirm that over the next two days and check the track and ambiance temperature. From what we learned from the last test and this afternoon I think we are 95% ready for the race. I was a little bit nervous this morning, because this is not the same structure that I'm used to, so I woke up this morning a didn't know exactly when I was going to ride or the program. Small details, like trying to get ready and the time to get into your leathers is difficult to judge, also being here in a slight different environment, are small details that make you feel abnormal and when you go inside the garage you know there are big expectations and you see all the riders riding here so it's a little bit different. I'm sure tomorrow and day by day it will get easier, but this race means a lot and is really important for our team and Yamaha. When you want to do such a good job you feel a bit of pressure and nerves but it's good for performance. Today we were the top three riders, so from that point of view it seems to be working."

Wataru Yoshikawa - Yamaha Factory Racing Team Team Manager

"In the afternoon session Nakasuga, Pol [Espargaro] and Bradley [Smith] all ran times in the 2'07 range, which shows that all three are very fast. As for the machine, we are getting a variety of requests from Pol and Bradley, and since Nakasuga knows the YZF-R1 so well, we are having him deal with their requests and verifying what needs to be done. Through our tests until now, we have made good progress in the machine development and set-up. Today we worked hard on the final aspects of the set-up, and of course this work will continue in tomorrow's sessions. The atmosphere on the team is very good and the riders respect each other. All three of them are specialists in sprint races, and that means they naturally have a strong desire to be the fastest. But this time, for the sake of the team effort, they are restraining themselves in that respect. I really want to see us win the race with this fantastic team."

David Checa - GMT94 Yamaha Rider

"I did my job and the crash was not my fault at all. We are happy and today's results are ok. We expected to be a little bit faster than the time we did today, but we will see what happens tomorrow. I'm happy because I didn't break anything, though I have pain everywhere on my body, but I hope I will sleep well today and will feel better tomorrow. We want to take a little bit of a risk, because we don't know the bike well. We ride with a standard engine and the gearbox as well, so we are happy and our performance is good. It's also a first time for us riders on these tyres, so we have to create an understanding of how to manage that, but we are happy. For sure, we have to improve some things, but our pace now is not so bad. Honestly, we normally have to be inside the top ten and today we are four, so that's positive, but we don't think too much about the results. For the moment we focus on finding solutions and aim to find half a second more."

Christophe Guyot ? GMT94 Yamaha Team Manager

"The crash was a bit difficult for David because he didn't understand why it happened. We need to check, but the good thing is that after the crash we were still fast, so I think everything is ok. I'm not looking at the results as much as I'm looking for our position compared to the permanent teams. Here in Japan the endurance race is completely different and we have a new YZF-R1 and new tyres. The new bike is very good, but with the new tyres it's not so easy and we are far away in another country so we can't take many risks and we don't have every thing with us to try. The goal for me is to be in front of the World Championship competing teams and today we did that. It will be the most important to be like this after the race, but we know this is possible and today we got a good view of our potential. When you start from between tenth and twelfth here in Suzuka, that's good. I would like to keep the title and that's still possible. Having the title is a pleasure and we enjoy it. Our plan for tomorrow is to take care. We have a good pace for the race and to be between tenth and fifteenth in qualifying would be good. We worked a lot on the electronics today and that is key for our performance. The bike's advantage is that there is nothing wrong with the chassis and engine; it's light and powerful and all is perfect. To find a set-up for the chassis is really easy. What we have to do now is find the right compromise between the electronics and the tyres. We had that with the previous bike with which we rode for five years, but with the new YZF-R1 we started on a higher level."

Broc Parkes - Monster Energy Yamaha Austria Racing Team rider

"I had to have an operation last week so I didn't get to take part in the test and today was my first time on the bike. In the previous years I was on different tyres this was the first time on Pirelli tyres and I had to feel what they were like. It was the first time for me with the endurance bike this year, but it felt pretty good and the bike was nice, though this morning we didn't have so much grip. After the rain the grip went down a bit, but I know the tyres pretty well because I race on them in the British Superbike championship. For Pirelli it's difficult and a big ask for them here because this is Bridgestone's back yard. They have quite a few tyres to test which is best for the race. You spend a lot of time on one side of the tyre so you need a lot of edge grip and these hot conditions are not really normal. However the bike feels good, though it's quite a bit different from the Factory bike. If we had different tyres I think we would be quite strong. It would be nice to get inside the top ten, it's possible, but difficult and in the race you never know."

Mandy Kainz ? Monster Energy Yamaha Austria Racing Team Team Manager

"It was a so-so day, because the last session was our first go at trying the dry setting because we always had mixed conditions before. We had a good experience with mixed conditions, as seen in the first practice when we finished third, but we have to work on the performance, the set-up and the Pirelli tyres in the hotter and dryer conditions. We struggled a bit with higher temperatures and the bike moved and span a lot, so we will have to improve this. Suzuka8h is our favourite race and more or less our home race, because we feel like we are close to home. This is the first year that we focus on just the #7 bike with Pirelli tyres and it's quite hard, but the whole team is like a family. Broc Parkes already rode a few seasons for us, but this year has a lot of clashing races so he could only take part in Suzuka while normally he is a regular in our team. He knows the team quite well and that makes it easier, but with this configuration and with these tyres it's a first for him. In BSB he is not allowed electronics so he just completed the first dry laps for him, which is not easy, but we improved quite a lot. Sheridan and Ivan as well, they know the bike and all was good. Nothing got destroyed today and we didn't take any risks, all parts are in one piece and we are ready for qualifying."

SUZUKI TEAMS GEARED-UP FOR SUZUKA 8 HOURS

Suzuki is geared-up for Japan?s most prestigious motorcycle race, the 38th "Coca-Cola Zero" Suzuka 8 Hours World Endurance Championship second round at Suzuka Circuit this weekend as the company celebrates the 30th anniversary of its iconic GSX-R range of motorcycles.

A total of five Suzuki factory and satellite-supported teams have entered including World Championship leaders Suzuki Endurance Racing Team (SERT), Suzuka lap record holders Yoshimura Suzuki, Team Kagayama Suzuki, Hamamatsu Team Titan and Moto Map Supply, along with a further 13 Suzuki GSX-R-mounted teams.

Le Mans, France opening round winners, SERT ? Vincent Philippe, Anthony Delhalle and Etienne Masson ? race with the #30 plate in recognition of the GSX-R. Alongside them on the #17 GSX-R1000 is Team Kagayama?s Noriyuki Haga, Ryuichi Kiyonari and Yukio Kagayama and the #12 Yoshimura Suzuki piloted by Takuya Tsuda, Alex Lowes and Josh Waters. Also on the grid are two further strong Japanese teams; #31 Hamamatsu Team Titan ? Tsubasa Inuki, Hikaru Ohshiro and Yohei Iganami, plus the #32 MotoMap Supply Suzuki comprising Yoshihiro Konna, Nobuatsu Aoki and Hideyuki Ogata.

SERT currently holds an 18-point lead in the series over Bolliger Switzerland with SRC Kawasaki a further point adrift, but some of the strongest opposition on the 5.821km circuit will from the Japanese factory teams, in particular 2013 and 2014 Suzuka 8 Hours winners Team Musashi RT Harc-Pro, who have drafted-in former MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner from retirement.

Suzuki Motor Corporation will have a big presence at the circuit with various promotions taking part to celebrate the GSX-R Anniversary. In recognition of the GSX-R, SERT Team Manager Dominique Meliand commented: "The Suzuki GSX-R 750 was a real innovation in the world of motorcycling. It was a revolution, thanks to its aluminum frame that provided an unexpected lightness. With the arrival of this bike in racing it was necessary to make it different, to learn, to develop and to organise our methodology in order to adapt the motorcycle better.

?What is amazing is how Suzuki has succeeded in developing a motorcycle both able to win in races, while allowing Suzuki?s customers to ride on road every day. As I have often said ?a racing machine is never accomplished, there is always still work to do to make things better? and the motorcycle has evolved over the years. Today I am very happy with our current motorcycle, the Suzuki GSX-R1000, and its performance, but I will always have good memories of the GSX-R750 and its beginnings.?

The opening free practice sessions begin today (Thursday) with qualifying getting underway on Friday, with the 84 entered teams vying for a total of 70 places on the grid. Saturday sees the final qualifying sessions and the all-important Top-10 Shootout that will determine the starting grid for Sunday?s race that kicks-off at 11.30am local time.

Yamaha Factory Racing Shines in Suzuka Qualifying

As the second day of action unfolded today in preparation for the legendary 38th "Coca-Cola Zero" Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race this Sunday, the Yamaha Factory Racing Team continued to impress with their dominant form in practice and qualifying.

Riders Katsuyuki Nakasuga, Pol Espargar? and Bradley Smith picked up where they left off yesterday at the top of the timesheets to set a blistering pace in the first free practice with a 2'07.888s lap. Smith endured a small crash in the final stages of the session, but it had no lasting effect on the bike or the rider. In fact, they then raised the stakes even further. As the sun shone down on Suzuka and the track temperatures rose, the trio used the YZF-R1 to its full potential in the first qualifying session, the only team to drop under the 2'07 mark with a stunning 2'06.877s lap.

The Yamaha Factory team continued their form in the afternoon with Nakasuga making the most of his vast knowledge of the Suzuka Circuit. Espargar? took a tumble on a fast lap near the end of his riding session whilst overtaking a slower rider but was luckily uninjured. Both he and Smith both made another step in improving their track knowledge with the team finishing in second, 0.419s from the front.

Fellow Yamaha entrants the Yamaha Austria Racing Team also kept their form from yesterday's practice, working hard to stay inside the top ten throughout the morning. Riders Broc Parkes, Sheridan Morais and Iv?n Silva rose to eighth in the free practice with a 2'10.383s before improving yet again in the first qualifying with a 2'09.730.

The afternoon saw Parkes deliver a stunning 2'08.973s lap that saw him enter the top five in the combined results for rider 1 group A. His teammates both rode a strong session on the YART YZF-R1, wrapping up just outside the top ten in 11th position at the end of the session.

Defending Endurance World Champions GMT94 Yamaha continued their hunt for the perfect set up ahead of Sunday's race. David Checa was clearly unfazed by yesterday's practice crash as he and teammates Kenny Foray and Mathieu Gines set about gaining further experience on the new tyres. The crew set a 2'11.177s in morning practice before picking up the pace to post a 2'09.871 in the first qualifying.

Checa, Gines and Foray kept up a consistent pace throughout the afternoon session, completing the qualifying by putting the GMT94 Yamaha YZF-R1 in 16th position.

This evening the Yamaha teams were back in action for the night practice sessions. As today's results see Yamaha Factory Racing Team within the top ten, they will be back on track tomorrow to take part in the tomorrow's 8H Top10 Trial which will decide the first ten positions on the grid.

Katsuyuki Nakasuga - Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider

"I was able to get a lap time of 2'06.877 today even though the machine spec we were using was for the race and not for time trials. This really proves how well the machine has progressed. Yesterday, Pol [Espargaro] got the best time overall for the day with 2'07.282, and today I was out to set a top time, so you might say my lap in the 2'06 range was a show of my pride as a rider. I didn't take risks in order to get that time either; it was a natural result of the way all three of us are inspiring each other. For the second session, the track temperature had risen and I was on used tires, so the 2'08 times I ran made it a good simulation of the race. Of course, we're all motivated because we're competing this time as Yamaha's Factory team, and having two high-level MotoGP riders as my partners has created a great environment to compete in. These factors also bring pressure, but if all three of us do our jobs, I think a good result will follow naturally. We obviously will be going for pole position in the Top 10 Trial and we'll be focused on getting good lap times."

Pol Espargar? - Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider

"The bike is working very well and the lap times are good. This is the good part; the bad part was that I crashed. It's difficult because in MotoGP when someone is slow, the difference is not this big and they usually go off the race line when they see you, while here it's the opposite, but I'm learning. I don't know what to expect for tomorrow, because here we ride short laps and tomorrow we have Superpole so we have just one lap, close your eyes and push until the end. It's a new experience and I will give my 100%. I'm having so much fun and I'm riding this bike with a smile on my face!"

Bradley Smith - Yamaha Factory Racing Team Rider

"It was unfortunate I crashed this morning. I was playing around with the braking mark and lost the front of the bike. It's good to have made that mistake, because it shows how easy those kinds of things can happen in the race. We worked on doing a race run first because it was around the same time of Sunday's race, so it gave everybody an idea of what to expect. In the afternoon I wanted to push, and I was happy with my lap time 2'07,73, which is very close to Nakasuga and Pol's. I didn't want to take too many risks and was still third quickest, which is not bad. I was happy, because these were the first fast laps that I've done here, because before I've just been focusing on race pace. To have three riders within half a second is great, we are definitely the strongest team at the moment."

Wataru Yoshikawa - Yamaha Factory Racing Team Team Manager

"Today Bradley [Smith] and Pol [Espargaro] each fell once, but the bike was heavily damaged in Pol's crash. Just as Pol had started one of his flying laps he came up on a slower rider at the Degner Curve and fell when trying to avoid him. Fortunately, there were no rider injuries, but now the team has a lot of work to do to repair the machine. Still, as the air and track temperatures began to rise during the first qualifying session, Nakasuga was able to record a lap time of 2'06.877. Then Pol clocked a 2'07.075 lap in the second session. Bradley had to run the second session on the main machine and was extra careful, but still managed to record a time of 2'07.308. So overall, everything is going well. There are no doubts about the abilities of our three riders, so one thing I want to do is make sure that they remember to keep a good margin of space when they come up on slower riders and to ride without taking unnecessary risks."

Broc Parkes - Monster Energy Yamaha Austria Racing Team (YART) rider

"The morning practice was pretty good, we didn't get many laps in, but we found a bike setting that worked for me, so we went straight in for the qualifier and felt pretty confident. In the first qualifying session I didn't find a good way, I tried a qualify tyre, but I didn't get the best from it. In the second session we started on a race tyre and changed the bike a little and then used the qualifying tyre at the end and I was pretty happy with the time. I didn't expect to do a 2'08 around here, because Pirelli have never been that fast and for us that was a good achievement. It's unfortunate that we were in the A group and the level was much faster than the B group else we would have made superpole. We missed it by one place, but in general the team is happy."

Mandy Kainz - Monster Energy Yamaha Austria Racing Team (YART) Team Manager

"I didn't expect this result or this lap time. We rode a 2'08 with Pirelli, while the fastest previous Pirelli lap was in the past a 2'11.9! I am really happy, we were one of the teams that didn't crash and had everything always under control. We didn't take too many risks and we are ready for the race. This year we have a bit less pressure than last year when we hosted the number one team. The team atmosphere is very good and there's always some time left for jokes. The riders are very nice and don't create a lot of extra work for us so I think we can also go to bed early tonight."

David Checa - GMT94 Yamaha rider

"We worked hard to create a good configuration on the bike today and our pace wasn't so bad. This is very positive, so we will see what happens tomorrow and find out what our rhythm for the race will be like. We didn't care about the results of the qualifying. It didn't matter what position we got, we have been working towards a good set-up for the race. We always went about it in this manner and we always get good results. It may be a pity that we start from fourteenth instead of sixth, but it's better to have it this way after qualifying than after the race!"

Christophe Guyot - GMT94 Yamaha Team Manager

"We were a little disappointed about the results of the qualifying session, because we saw that the top ten would have been a possibility, but we decided before the session to ride a complete stint without a soft tyre. Even like this David rode 2'09.8 and Kenny a 2'10, so the pace is good. Of course we are competitive, so we still think about the position we could have gotten with soft tyres, but I still think it was a good decision. We have made a big improvement with the YEC electronic system, so we will use this for the race. We have good traction control and the riders have a good feeling. Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. did a good job with these kit parts in just two months and this development is also good for the customers."

YOSHIMURA SUZUKI 2ND IN SUZUKA 8 HOURS QUALIFYING

Yoshimura Suzuki put the team?s GSX-R1000 into a provisional second-place grid-position in Friday Qualifying ahead of the 38th "Coca-Cola Zero" Suzuka 8 Hours World Endurance Championship second round at Suzuka in Japan on Sunday.

Team riders Takuya Tsuda, Alex Lowes and Josh Waters lapped at 2?06.958 going into Saturday?s final sessions and Top-10 Time attack event to determine positions on the grid for Sunday?s race.

A total of three Suzuki teams qualified for the Time Trial; Yoshimura Suzuki, Team KAGAYAMA (Noriyuki Haga, Ryuichi Kiyonari and Yukio Kagayama) and MotoMap SUPPLY (Yoshihiro Konna, Nobuatsu Aoki and Hideyuki Ogata).

World Endurance Championship leaders and 14-time World Endurance Champions, Suzuki Endurance Racing Team (Vincent Philippe, Anthony Delhalle and Etienne Masson) missed the top-10, but are looking to prove the reliability of the team?s GSX-R1000 and experience of its riders in the race.

SUZUKI ENDURANCE RACING TEAM

Vincent Philippe:

Today was difficult for us because when we came here for the test days earlier this month, it was wet. We need more laps under dry conditions, but I think it will be better for the race. We need to find a better setting tomorrow so we can push harder in the race.?

Anthony Delhalle:

?We did not find the best setting today. I tried to push myself, got a clear lap, but came back to the pits as the front was not stable and the rear was slipping. We tried to find a solution immediately and changed settings, but we are still adjusting it to find the best setting. Suzuka was very hot today, but it?s ok as this is my sixth Suzuka 8 Hours and I am not worried about the high humidity.?

Etienne Masson:

?It?s my first time here, but I want to run faster, but all the local riders who know Suzuka are much faster and it is difficult to make a step forward. It is hot today, and the humidity is high also, but I am not worried as it is similar in my country, France.?

YOSHIMURA SUZUKI Shell ADVANCE

Takuya Tsuda:

?It?s flowed well since the Suzuka test. I felt the qualifying today was hot and severe, but the lap-time was good. In the tomorrow's qualifier, I?d like to beat my personal best from last year and run well in the Top 10 Trial.?

Alex Lowes:

?It is my first Suzuka 8 Hours race and I hope I?ve had a good result so far. The support of the Yoshimura team is perfect and because we had good times in today's qualifier, I did not want to overdo it; it?s important to go for the victory in the race. I?m really looking forward to it.?

Josh Waters:

?I had some minor issues today, but these should be sorted for tomorrow, but as my lap-times weren?t the best of our team, I think Alex and Takuya will do the Top-10 Trial tomorrow.?

Team KAGAYAMA

Yukio Kagayama:

?I thought about today's qualifier to reduce the burden on Noriyuki and Ryuichi, who ran yesterday's session as much as possible and I wanted them to be familiar with our bike. We have to attack our session in the morning, but our level is good and I am relieved with the good result today.?

Noriyuki Haga:

?I do my best in all given conditions and I concentrate on it. We are looking forward to the Suzuka 8 Hours and I will give my best, as always.?

Ryuichi Kiyonari:

?I pushed forward with the set-up of the bike and improved the average time but I want to work more and improve in the next session.?

Yoshihiro Konno:

?The track surface temperature was higher today but we improved in the afternoon qualifier of the afternoon of today. We aim for more improvements in set-up for the race.?

Nobuatsu Aoki:

?We have worked on tyre development, I?ve tried it in previous tests, hopefully I?ve been able help and we had a good result today.?

Hideyuki Ogata:

?I did three races in Autopolis in September, Suzuka 2&4 and the JSB1000 class in April this year to prepare for the Suzuka 8 Hours. I would like to say thanks to the people giving me support. Today's qualifier with Konno and Aoki was good and I am feeling happy with the result.?

Yamaha Factory Racing Strikes with Sensational Record Suzuka Pole
The Yamaha Factory Racing Team blew away the competition today with a stunning 2'06.000 lap on the YZF-R1 around the 5807m long Suzuka Circuit to claim a superb pole position for the 38th "Coca-Cola Zero" Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race.

Hot and sweaty weather and a slippery track set the scene for the third day of action at the legendary eight hours endurance race weekend. Riders Katsuyuki Nakasuga, Pol Espargar? and Bradley Smith looked competitive during the morning Free Practice session, setting the second fastest time with a 2'08.074s, but didn't take any risks as the real challenge was yet to come.

The chosen riders for the pole position shoot-out Nakasuga and Espargar? stunned the Suzuka crowd in the afternoon's 8H Top10 Trial. During this session two riders per team are allowed to ride one flying lap each around the technically challenging Suzuka Circuit to fight for pole position.

Espargar? was the first YFTR rider to hit the clear track and set a hot lap. The Spaniard pushed to the absolute limit, using all his MotoGP experience to set a stunning 2'06.000 lap for provisional pole, which at the time was 1.697s faster than anyone so far.

Then it was local Yamaha hero Nakasuga's turn to step aboard the YZF-R1. The experienced Japanese rider rode smoothly and aggressively through the twisty section, taking full advantage of the performance of Yamaha's class leading Superbike to finish with an impressive lap just 0.059s off his teammate.

As none of the competitors were able to drop under the 2'06.2 mark, Espargar?'s incredible 2'06.000 becomes the new Endurance fastest lap at Suzuka, more than six-tenths of a second faster than the previous Endurance Pole Record.

Today's results see the Yamaha Factory Racing Team on pole position for tomorrow's race, which will start at 11:30AM, local time.

Katsuyuki Nakasuga - Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider

"I'm really happy, but at the same time I wish my lap time had been faster. I'm very happy for my teammate [Espargaro], he did so well, but I wished I could have gone faster too, but I did my best. I'm not satisfied that Pol was faster than me, I tried to beat his time but I couldn't and that was unfortunate for me, but this is a good result for tomorrow and we are all going to try to do our best. I learned a lot today and I will use the experience I gained today, and perhaps tomorrow, in the Japan Championship, which I race in."

Pol Espargar? - Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider

"I feel very happy, because this was a challenge for me and I did not expect this result. We did just one test with Bradley and Nakasuga in the preseason on the dry and we didn't ride a lot on this track. Bradley was also fast this weekend, his pace was very similar and the same with Nakasuga, he was also very fast. Tomorrow we have the big show and it will be difficult, because anything can happen, but we are confident. When I saw my lap time I was a bit surprised because I never tested the softer rear tyre during the tests or this weekend and I never rode in Superpole before with only one lap. Here today we had just one shot and in your mind you're always checking the lap and thinking of where you could improve something. Maybe I could have improved in the last sector, because I relaxed a little bit and was wary of making a mistake in the chicane. When I saw the time I said "come on!", because it would be difficult for someone to beat it, but when I saw the lap time of Nakasuga-san I was a bit scared, he was also very fast, but I was lucky that I was fast in T1 and this gave me a chance, but Nagasuga was very strong in T4 and I was worried again. I'm happy because I did a good lap time, but Nakasuga was also under the record and Bradley showed good potential over the whole weekend. Our pace is really similar and this is more important than the pole."

Bradley Smith - Yamaha Factory Racing Team Rider

"First of all a big congratulations to my teammate, at the end of the day our team management made the right call with who they choose for the Superpole, both guys were riding extremely fast. I'm happy to be starting the race from first position tomorrow for the team, but it's a bit different to do one lap compared to more than 200 in tomorrow's race. I hope we get a good night sleep, calm down from the excitement and be ready to do it all again tomorrow."

Wataru Yoshikawa - Yamaha Factory Racing Team Team Manager

"Pol and [Katsuyuki] Nakasuga were able to run super lap times on it in the 2'06 range, and we also had no need to use the race machine, so we are satisfied with today's results. However, the important thing is the race tomorrow. We are competing as a Yamaha Factory Team and our goal is to finish the race with the maximum laps of 218 using the EWC machine. If we can run that many laps, we believe we can win the race. To do this, I am going to stress again in our final meeting that we want the riders to run cautiously, keeping safe margins of space between themselves and the other [slower] machines they will encounter."

YOSHIMURA SUZUKI 4TH IN SUZUKA TOP-10 TIME ATTACK

Yoshimura SUZUKI Shell ADVANCE will start from fourth place on the grid at tomorrow?s 38th "Coca-Cola Zero" Suzuka 8 Hours World Endurance Championship second round in Japan following today?s Top-10 time attach at the infamous Japanese circuit.

With two riders fronting the team, Takuya Tsuda put-in a lap of 2?06.516 aboard the team?s GSX-R1000 with Top-10 partner Alex Lowes posting a 2?07.144 lap-time as track temperatures rose to 60 degrees.

Just behind in fifth place was Team KAGAYAMA, with team owner Yukio Kagayama posting a best-lap of 2?07.990 as MotoMap SUPPLY secured 10th position with a lap of 2?11.019, set by Hideyuki Ogata.

World Endurance Championship leaders Suzuki Endurance Racing Team (SERT) will line-up in 18th position and Hamamatsu Team Titan 65th.

Tomorrow?s 38th "Coca-Cola Zero" Suzuka 8 Hours World Endurance Championship event gets underway at 11.30 local time.

#12 YOSHIMURA SUZUKI Shell ADVANCE

Alex Lowes:

?This has been a great experience so far and a really interesting system with the single time attack. Unfortunately I made some mistakes in the early stages, my riding was not perfect, but I really enjoyed it. We have now found a good setting for tomorrow and I am looking forward to race tomorrow.?

Takuya Tsuda:

?We have concentrated on finding a good setting for tomorrow?s race. We could not get the pole position today and I am feeling a little disappointed, but we did our best. The important thing is tomorrow?s race and today I concentrated on this.?

#17 Team KAGAYAMA

Yukio Kagayama:

?In today's session we were able to show our performance of our machine. We had already set a 2?07.5-lap but we are aiming to get better. It was difficult to get a ?super lap? as the track surface temperature was higher than I expected. The strong point of our team is that we three riders have scored six wins at the Suzuka 8 Hours and we will do our best tomorrow.?

Ryuichi Kiyonari:

?I tried a different setting this morning following my crash yesterday, but the setting I tried yesterday was better than today?s, so reverted to the original settings. Tomorrow I will attack the race

#32 Moto Map SUPPLY

Nobuatsu Aoki:

The track temperature was about 60 degrees today, both for free practice and Top-10 time attack, so it was very difficult for us to give our best performance. But I think it is very important to do our best and to keep the higher average constantly for tomorrow?s race.

Hideyuki Ogata:

?It was very disappointed I made a big mistake at ?Gyaku? Bank corner. In the morning free practice, I could make a 2?10.7 after passing several bikes, so I expected I could get a 2?09 lap-time in easily, so I am very sorry with my time today.?
