Electrical issue - Help needed

Hi.. I'm experiencing a sudden problem with my 'Y' reg 2001 fuel injected model (bike was fine on Sunday but problem apparent this morning) and would ask for guidance from the knowledgeable amongst us...

1) With the Ignition on and engine not running

With all lights off the indicators act properly.

With sidelights on all 4 indicators flash (no matter whether left or ruight hand side selected) and front light dim.

With headlight turned on all 4 indicators are on with steady light (i.e. not flashing) and headlight very dim.

2)With the engine running

With lights off indicators function properly

With sidelights on only three lights flash - the one that doesn't flash is the front indicator of the side selected when turning on, and the fuel low light flashes

With headlight on all four indicators come on with a steady light (i.e. they don't flash), the headlight is dim and the fuel low light flashes.

Very grateful for any advice/guidance. I'm not going to use the bike in the meantime.

Wow! That is sure going to be an earth fault but finding it could be fun!
There is a nest of them just to the left of where the tank is bolted down so start there.
Make sure they are tight and clean with no broken wires.
Main battery earth worth a look also but is most likely ok.
Others will know where other earths are located relating to lights etc.
Good luck!

All of the bike earths meet at the "loom fix" connector, from there a large earth wire goes to the frame just behind the tank on the cross rail. It's most likely your problem lies within the connector the loom fix addresses.

Yup, see loom fix thread at the top of Help, section.

Easy fix with a soldering iron@tu*

Having spent an hour reading through the loom fix thread I'm sure that's the right place to start. I'm hoping that's the problem and that the reg/rec is OK, otherwise a relatively cost-free fix is going to turn into a 'thick end of a hundred quid' fix.

If you have any thoughts about it bein.g a charging system problem then it is very easy to check each component with a cheap digital multimeter - again see the relevant thread at the top of Help

But it doesn't sound like this is likely in your case,.......... But you never know:-0)

Worth running through the charging circuit checks for the day you do have problems in this area....the clock is tickingsh1tehppns

And an update:

Dismantled the bike as necessary and was a bit concerened as there was no telltale lump to tell me where the connector was situated. However on peeling back some of the tape in the appropriate area I met with quite a bit of blue-green powder indicating that something was wrong there. Peeling away more black tape I discovered that the loom fix has already been done.... The thin green earth wires are nicely 'paired up' and an old-fashioned 'pull-test' showed nothing loose. Similarly for all the other repairs that had been done but I did notice an apparent problem with one of the three yellow wires with single red stripe that had been soldered together - it looked like the plastic coating was perished somehow.

Can anyone tell me what those yellow/red wires are for please? I don't want to go any further until I know what I'm dealing with. As always, genuinely grateful for any advice.

Post loom fix repair it with self amalgamating plastic tape for a seam free seal,
it does not sound like a reg/rec fault to me

good luck

Where are the three yellow/red wires? The only thing remotely like that I can think of are the three cables from the generator to the reg/rec but from memory I am pretty sure they are solid yellow?

Anyone:dunno:

If you look here :-

http://www.bikersoracle.com/jaws/looms/2001 on wiring diagram.jpg

There are a few yellow with red wires that are joined together, the joint will be in the loom fix connector, they provide power from the ECU to the MAP sensor, TPS and the immobiliser.

While this connection being faulty might give problems, the original post is a classic case of a faulty earth - perhaps the loom fix needs to be checked again.
