The wood is a contradiction that I'm not fond of. It's too new. far better to use old scaffold boards cut to size or metal sheeting rusted and darkened down. I think if you could follow that path then you might do well selling them in any of the many steam punk forums.

I know exactly what you mean mate, I'm not overly happy with it myself but CLS is cheap pretty smooth & has nice rounded edges, its also very rot resistant especially when well varnished & some of my stuff does live outside, not had any bother selling stuff yet but thanks for the tip (y) Struggling to plane timber at the moment as waiting for a carpal tunnel op so CLS is easy for now

I have actually been looking at other materials & different finishes for timber I really fancy trying Shou sugi ban (look it up) ;)there are a few other ideas I am kicking about too but the stuff is intended to be used so really rusty metal & sharp edges is out

I like oak & have made a couple of things out of it in the past but its expensive & can be a bugger to work by hand, even more so with the current state of my right one :(

At another time I'd be asking if you wanted to flog a piece of it off Andy but at the moment I don't have either the money or the capability to do anything good with it :(

The carpenter that installed the oak worktops in the kitchen and utility did it for a fixed price plus the cost of router bits - when I saw how many he got through I understood why!

Must have been shit router bits, my father in law was a joiner he very reluctantly used power tools preferring hand tools, he has tools that are older than me, however I digress, when we bought the smallholding the kitchen measured 20' x 12' & father in law fitted our kitchen, we spent a fortune on worktops & father in law only needed one router bit to do the kitchen and the utility room, with the leftovers he fitted some units into the tack room & used the same router bit to cut a hole for the Belfast sink.

In that case I doubt it was oak unless it was still green as its pretty easy to work then, once seasoned properly its a bitch & as soon as the bit begins to lose its edge then oak begins to chip, you are right though shit router bits are a pointless exercise in penny pinching as one good quality one will usually outlast 4 or 5 cheap ones

Well yesterday I was given an old yam diff along with some other junk by the lad I used to work for at the bike shop, stripping it down it cleaning it netted me a nice big helical gear some big interesting bearings & a few other useful parts so stool number err umm god knows is in the process of being made :) I really like the way this one is turning out, pics in a day or two

I did look at using a piece of scaff plank for the top as suggested by (Me ?) somewhere above but really don't like it as its too thin to look right + I was a builder for years & have seen too many of the damn things :p while I was in the shed I decided to try shou sugi ban on the frame for the gear table I mentioned above & really like the effect so that's what this new stool is having, I think it may be more fitting as the timber will be dark & interesting ;)

In other news while at the shop yesterday I saw an old mate who reckons he's got a supply of scrap engines etc from a bike breaker so there is a good chance I will be able to turn out some interesting stuff soon & best of all its very, very cheap :) at the moment I have a head full of ideas but virtually no parts left :(

I've got the practical ability and the tools to make this sort of stuff. What I don't have is the artistic talent to make them look that bloody good. Respect.

Thanks mate :D

I don't really have any talent I just find a bunch of parts then point & squirt with the mig & see what I end up with, sometimes its good, sometimes barely acceptable & occasionally complete rubbish that gets cut up & used for something else down the line, thankfully as I've been doing stuff like this a while I don't tend to make too many complete cockups anymore, having said that I made a load of sawdust & a nice lump if firewood today when trying something new for a stool top :)

I thought I'd better show you lot why I've been hunting down scrap engines etc recently ;)

I have always made stuff occasionally but this came about because I had some pretty useless scrap, some spare timber was bored & needed a workshop stool, its developed since than as you will see ;)

A mate saw it & wanted it now I have done 10 or more & all have sold straight away

Then I got bored so thought what can I do with wheels .............

just cos my mate needed a heavy bookend this happened one night :)

Now I'm on a coffee table trip, this isn't finished but not far off

Thoughts & ideas welcome, I know this stuff wont be to everyone's taste but I enjoy doing it & have made a few quid, not a clue what to ask for the table though so an idea there would be good (y)

Some really good stuff there. What did you use to make the dog in the last but one pic?

Thanks for the positive comment mate (y)

I'm not sure as I wasn't there but I think Bertie was made with a half bucket of ginger, a pinch of stupid & an ounce of cunning that's only for use when food is in the offing :D he's great !

Here are the latest two stools, you will notice the different finish as mentioned before, I like it but any comments good or bad welcome as always (y)

This one is around a foot high & the top swivels

This one is about 15" high with a fixed top, I tried something different with the edge on it as you can see but I'm not sure it works, the springs are there purely for show

last is the small coffee/side table I started ages ago & am still waiting on being able to get some angle iron for hairpin legs & to be able to afford a piece of glass or Perspex to cover it
