I thought I'd better show you lot why I've been hunting down scrap engines etc recently ;)

I have always made stuff occasionally but this came about because I had some pretty useless scrap, some spare timber was bored & needed a workshop stool, its developed since than as you will see ;)

A mate saw it & wanted it now I have done 10 or more & all have sold straight away

Then I got bored so thought what can I do with wheels .............

just cos my mate needed a heavy bookend this happened one night :)

Now I'm on a coffee table trip, this isn't finished but not far off

Thoughts & ideas welcome, I know this stuff wont be to everyone's taste but I enjoy doing it & have made a few quid, not a clue what to ask for the table though so an idea there would be good (y)

I love it.

But 'it's not allowed in the house'.

One of the things we agreed on before we built our extension is that I could have a coffee table made out of a V8/V12 engine - there are some beauties out there and I had my eye on a Maserati motor that had been beautifully detailed and presented.

It only occurred to me months later that an oak coffee table had appeared in the extension.....

Another dream crushed.:(

Thanks gents (y)

I have seen a few of the v8 top gear type tables & some of them are really well made but the price of the good ones is shocking

When I've looked I always thought thats the same as the last one I looked at & the next will be the same too, all seem to be done in the same way to me so I was aiming at different & most definitely at the cheaper end of the market :D

I actually have a v8 engine if I wanted to go & pick it up & make a table out of it but the market is flooded with them & I really cant be bothered doing what's already been done

The expensive ones have been powder coated.

Personally I usually prefer rusty stuff - like the beautiful old cast iron Singer sewing machine base that I picked up in a junk shop; Got home from work two days later and it had received a coat of Hammerite :bash: - but I think an engine really needs to be presented in a clean state.

Also seen a nice simple coffee table - an F1 rear tyre on its side with a round sheet of glass on top - looks good in the right place. Which apparently isn't my lounge:argue:

Thanks again gents (y) I enjoy making stuff for the hell of it but its good to know others like them as well

I did make a table lamp about 10 years ago jeffa the lad I gave it to just bought one of the stools & the lamp now sits on top of it in the corner of his living room :D I'm fresh out of cams etc at the moment so lamps & stools are on hold until I find some but its in the plan ;)

I am with andy on the rusty obviously used stuff I have wooden a frame made with a bunch of old gears welded into the centre that is intended to be a table top but I'm still looking for some cheap used angle iron to make hairpin legs for it as I don't think new would look right, usually with stuff like that I clean it down & lacquer it so it keeps the original finish just like I have done with the cranks etc above

Years ago when I ran Bond Minicars, we had a trophy that had been made from a clutch basket for the base, a de-compressor for the stem and then a headlight reflector for the cup. It was quite a coverted trophy.

I'm not really doing it for the money mate its more a hobby I can do when I feel well enough & in my own time but I have made a few quid off them, getting engines for very little money is the biggest problem I have at the moment

Stools go for between 30 & 50 quid depending on how they turn out & if the tops swivel, the bench went for 100 to a mate but I'd been offered quite a lot more, I'd be happy if the coffee table went for around the same price

I'm yet to sell any of it myself, I just keep dumping it at a mates house & he usually gets rid fairly quickly, I left 2 stools last Friday & suspect they will be sold when I go again this Friday :D
