Clutch dragging

Barry-

Black is where its at
Now turning my attention to other areas of my bike, when my bike was returned to me from the garage mechanic, he mentioned that i seemed to have some clutch drag on the bike. I had noticed previously that when i change from neutral into first not only do i get a jolt from the change, but often the bike will also stall.

What are my options here can i adjust the clutch or is it a replacement of parts?

what clutch lever have you got?
how old in the engine oil
how old is the clutch fluid

and into first most clunk in.

I will check on the lever it is an after market part though, engine oil less than two weeks old, clutch fluid unknown. I will replace the clutch fluid and come back with results.

if the lever is an adjustable one , i have know people to have it set too close the bar thus not letting the clutch use all its travel

it is an adjustable one and i have let the clutch lever out as far as it can go, as it was continually stalling, that solved it for a bit, but now it is starting to stall again..

Bleed it ...I undo the banjo on the master cylinder first and go from there @tu*

Plenty of rags around it first tho'

Er... Bleed nipple on clutch secondary cylinder LH side just in front of your left foot rest.

Could also be crud on the shaft that the sec cyl operates.. as it collects cud off your drive chain.. remove front sprocket cover and inspect.

see below, but define clutch drag. Does the bike creep forward when you engage first gear even when the lever is on the bars? they all clunk when you engage 1st gear, the higher the revs, the worse the clunk, ie still on choke.

Mine did that when I bought it, standard lever etc. fluid looked ok. I was advised by Jaws to do a master cylinder repair kit, which I did. That helped, but it only lasted a few weeks. Next I tried the slave cylinder repair kit. When I stripped the slave cylinder, the previous muppet who fitted the O ring had nicked it in two places and removed two big lumps of rubber which were floating around in the cylinder. Once I replaced the piston, which was corroded slightly and the seals, the Clutch has been perfect since. Due to the crappy location of the slave cylinder, where it does collect crud off your chain, I would personally start by servicing this. A set of rubbers and a new piston will cost you peanuts. I read on another forum a theory that bikes with Scott oilers fitted had a higher failure rate of the slave cylinder seals, and the theory is that the oil from the Scott oil contaminates the rubbers leading to an earlier fail rate. There was also a simple mod using a piece of plastic cut from a washing up bottle which folk had done to stop as much crud from entering the end of cylinder. Unfortunately I cant find it but if I do I will post it on here.

PS bleeding the clutch was a twat of a job, if you know anyone with a fluid puller kit, I suggest you try and borrow it. if not they are not expensive off Jaws or other retailers.

Grabby Clutch unable to engage neutral when hot

Gents interesting post.
nice to see the THEY ALL have a clunky 1st gear.....
Problem I have when hot i can't disengage / get neutral. I have to stop the engine. I recently replaced the master cylinder as it would not bleed not matter what i did ( plunger seals had warped and replacement cylinder cheaper than seal kit) . Ex bike techy suggested sucking the fluid in from the bleed nipple which worked a treat if not very nice to taste..
Clutch is better but still grabby especially when hot. Same bike techy suggests the basket is notched . Tried stripping clutch housing today but the cover will not give ... despite gentle persuasion , rubber face hammer etc.
Suggestions from all most welcome . especially safe cover removal...

Hi Shrek.

I suggest you start a new post for your problem rather than tagging on the end of an old post.

Check the obvious first - the fluid level; it is surprising how little below the mark is needs to really knacker the ability to engage hear at a standstill.

Trust me, I know this;-0))
