Build a brand new 97 spec Blackbird

There was an article in Ride some time back where they reckoned it would cost ?40k+ to build a GXR1000 from scratch using new parts from Suzuki.

I have just worked out the mark up that I reckon my local Honda main dealer has on master cylinder cover screws. Applying the percentage mark up (I reckon 851% and that's probably well short of the real mark as I am comparing the price they sell them for compared to the price per 100 from a trade supplier) against the cost of a new 97 Bird in 1997 it would cost ?76590 to replace my 97 Bird using new parts from Honda!!

Worth every penny though!!

PS my 97 Bird with 69k miles is available for a very reasonable ?40,000 if anyone is interested. I'll throw in a free tank of petrol.

Some time back phoned a local Honda franchise.... can't say which one. Alternator price ?315.00, and the kind git offered 10% discount....
Rectifier price ?205.00, did'nt offer discount. Got internet quotes for Alternator ?89.00 delivered and Rectifier ?68.50 delivered.

Can't understand why we don't support our local dealer........ 3ck04

Dread to think what the hourly rate would be but I would anticipate ?50 hour + Vodka And Tonic.

They've got you if you've got a new one, because you need the stamp in the service book for resale value and the guarantee

The only time a service history seems to have any clout is when dealers sell you a bike. When you try to exchange your bike for another one they say it does'nt make much difference. Its the same when they give you three months warranty and charge you another ?5000 on top of the price a private seller would ask, they know full well nothing major is going to go wrong in that short period of time. Look at all the new show rooms and workshops who do you think paid for them. ?50 for headstock bearings that you can buy for about ?20 from your local bearing supplier, ?8 for the nut that holds your front sprocket on, it's a special nut he said to me it has a chemical that locks it to the spindle, a cheap form of loctite in other words. All main dealers are rip off merchants who act like your best mate untill you want to purchase some thing from them and then you're just another mug they can rook money from. :bang:

Who me?

Sold bikes for one and a half years, for a company in Sheffield who were the largest Yamaha dealership in the UK. iN 2004, we were voted No.1 Dealership in the country in MCN's same poll, No.1 in aftersales service in 2005. These votes were cast by our customers, so we pleased a lot of people in those two years. From experience, I can tell you that punters are very, very reluctant to buy a bike that has no recorded services. A full service book does add value to a bike, I wouldn't buy a bike without one, not as my main bike anyway. When I left the dealership I had a very loyal 40 plus customer base. A rip off merchant, no way! I will now climb off my soapbox, I understand your point of view but it is a blinkered one. Don't tar all dealers with the same brush, cheers. s04pb0x6

I would have no problems buying an import bike, they're all imports anyway ! I would advise anyone to ask the question " how much for this ....... miles service?", if you don't like the answer, walk away. As regards the warranty issue and servicing, Yamaha ask that you have the first service done with the dealer who supplied the bike, after that, go wherever the feck you like, as long as they stamp the book. At the end of the day, when you take your bike in for exchange, look at what they're going for in the classifieds, try to see a Glasses Guide and stick to your guns, it's a buyers market, bike sales are down nationwide. Just remember, dealerships are in the business to make money as we all are when we go to work, it's up to us how we spend it.
