Same shit going down here.
Government abandoned social housing more than 10 years ago and now wonder why we have a homeless problem.
I saw it coming 10 years ago.

They don't seem to get the idea that some people will never be able to afford a home of their own, simply.
Social housing is necessary.

Interesting point.

The government putting more and more obstacles in the way of private landlords isn't helping. Although I do appreciate that some of the gravy needed to be removed from the train.

Latest genius suggestions are that landlords should a) not be able to vet prospective tenants and b) not be able to block pets being kept by tenants.

Can't help thinking that if the old system of DSS paying rent to landlords direct hadn't been abolished the problem of shortage of property for DSS tenants would not be getting even worse. At least under the old system the landlord knew they would get the rent, total lottery now. And I can understand why landlords are moving away from this market.

What a mess.

And the reason for the proposed new rules is so obvious ... To stop a landlord finding out the new tenant is on benefits and only has a 50 % chance of getting the rent !

Absolutely.

I am afraid this is all down to the government sticking its nose in and using a sledgehammer to solve an issue where finesse is needed.

A few years back we went to look at a couple of tenanted houses with a view of buy to let, one of the tenants was disabled & his rent was paid by DSS, found out that the Landlord was also charging him some rent on top of what DSS were paying.
