BREXIT SCUPPERS CHEAPER JAP BIKES
UK

19/07/2018

The Japan-Europe Free Trade Agreement (JEFTA), signed on 17 July by European Commission and Japanese government representatives, will mean an end to the EU common external customs tariff of 6% on motorcycles imported from Japan — once it is ratified and fully implemented over the next five years, writes BDN financial editor Roger Willis.

And apart from cheaper Japanese bikes for European customers, JEFTA also includes provision for harmonisation of technical safety (lights, brakes, etc) and emissions standards. So European motorcycle manufacturers exporting to Japan will no longer have to tweak their specifications to comply with currently differing regulations, and vice versa.

Unfortunately, JEFTA reciprocity will not apply to the UK, because we will have left the EU long before it comes into effect. Arriving at any separate British free-trade deal with Japan is a distant prospect. JEFTA took more than a decade of hard bargaining.

Add in the weakness of the £..........

Everything is or will be more expensive unless there is a marked improvement in £.

Typical doomsayers!
Maybe, but also reality. Have a look round your home and see how much of the content is imported. If anything is UK made then the materials may well have been imported.

One of the rip off forex bureaus at Stanstead was offering €0.89 for a £ yesterday!

Real rate is about 1.11 ish.

noobie

Clueless in most things
The idea the manufacturers can do without the U.K. market is pure hokum. They will find a way of making it work.

Maybe, but today I got 1.13 € from revolute
Moral is, do not EVER use Forex or airport exchange points in general.. Should only be used for total emergencies

Well as we (AB excluded) all have Blackbirds - The Last Bike You will Ever Buy (TM) - It's not a problem. :D

And as the Blackbird was built to withstand nuclear war (more or less) we won't have to worry about the price of spares. ;)

Absolutely bang on! If you're coming to Singapore, you'd be lucky to get S$1.6 to the £ at the airport, yet you'll get S$1.8 here even at Chnagi airport. Airport exchange desks at home are shite.

Presumably plenty of people use them or they wouldn't survive.

Makes you wonder.....

Yep, it certainly does.

Ok, if I have to travel on business at extremely short notice, which is not at all unusual, then I've had to use the airport exchanges. It doesn't matter to my pocket because it goes down as a business expense so I claim it back. However, for people going on holiday, there's absolutely no need (or excuse) for using the thieving twats. A quick look at Martin Wassiface's website, money saving expert dot com, gives you a list of places where you can order your currency from and get a much better rate. When I start travelling out of the UK again, I'll most prolly pick up my foreign currency at my destination rather than use UK airports.

There are worse things to do than use a debit (not credit!!) card to draw currency out of an ATM at your destination - usually fee free and the exchange rates aren't too bad.

Also worth exploring what your bank can provide - i have a € account and my bank cards automatically debit that for € transactions so don't even need to carry additional cards (wonder what genius dreamed that one up...:eusa_whistle:.). Would also work on $,¥, etc if I had accounts in those currencies.
