Its the wifes birthday in about 3 weeks. I'm contemplating a visit to Blenheim Palace (think I picked up on a subtle hint a couple of weeks ago). I took her to see Castle Howard last year and it really was a spectacular day out.

Anyway as it's quite a trek to get to Blenheim Palace I'm thinking of maybe staying down there for a couple of nights, so what else is worth seeing down that way and any recommendations on places to stay..cheers:thumbsup:

Blenheim palace is worth a look it is not cheap, I think they like people to buy season ticket. Sorry I don't know what accommodation is available locally. Woodstock is a nice place to visit, I think they have museum.

definitely worth a visit if that is your thing, the grounds are great and so is the house. The story it tells is also pretty good, especially if you ask questions of the guides. We travel up 3 or 4 times a year but don't stay over.

If you are staying over I would recommend going into Oxford for a day and doing a walking tour. Really beautiful place that is dripping in history. Coincidentally the walking tours start outside the sister hotel of that which I recommended above - also called The Buttery!

Mrs A has just reminded me that The Buttery is a long walk from Blenheim Palace - to be precise it isn't that far to the gate, but the driveway is rather long!!

Thanks all for the comments:thumbsup: Have been looking at loads of B&B's and The Buttery looks like good value. Only concern is there is no on site parking, having never been there before is there plenty of parking areas nearby?

We had no problem , parked about thirty yards away. If you go into Woodstock with BP on the left there is public on street parking just past The Buttery.

You can then sing...

By the time I got to Woodstock
They were half a million strong
Everywhere there were songs and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
Turning into butterflies
Above our nation.
We are stardust, we are golden
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden.
We are stardust, we are golden
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden.
We are stardust, we are golden
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden.

In the end we only stayed down there overnight. We found Blenheim Palace to be an incredible place and will def be going again. As you go round you tend to get drawn into the incredible story of it's creation. The parsimonious Sarah (1st Duchess of Marlborough) oversaw most of the building work and reigned in the Architect from going too OTT... shudder to think what it would have looked like :D

Here's a couple of pics
