Hi folks,

Sorry for posting this here but I have insufficient privledges to post in the bird help section.

2002 FI blackbird.....

So, my bird renovation is coming along.... it starts and runs absolutely lovely but when it’s warm it starts ticking over between 2/3 thousand revs.

I’ve wound the idle adjust all the way out so the end is no longer in contact with the fuel injection.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks

John

check the auto fast idle is not stuck. This is operated by the water coolant temp and is 'on' when the engine is cold and is turned 'off' when the engine reaches normal operating temp. by the increased water temp flow. If this sticks 'on' then higher revs will happen. Also check that there is 'free play' in the throttle cable when throttle grip fully shut as this will also increase revs.

Thanks Lee, any idea how I locate or test the auto fast idle switch/component?

Many thanks

On a parts diagram it is a 'wax thermostat'.

As Lee says above they do get stuck sometimes - normally giving the piston a bit of a wiggle will sort it, but I understand they can be dismantled and cleaned. Very simple bit of kit- the wax gets hot allowing the piston to move and take the 'choke' off.

You can then mess about changing the idle setting back to where it was before you started messing with it.:D

£5.50 sponsorship of this site will get you into all the information and help you will ever need on a Blackbird, including the problem you will have on your FI at some point if an alteration hasn't been made to the wiring loom......

Oh, 'welcome' by the way.

Note to Dad - if s that welcoming and helpful enough for you........

Hi Andy,

I have been a member of the site since about 2012 but haven’t been on for a while as the bird has been stored for the last couple of years. There have obviously been changes to the site.

I’ve already done the loom fix and helped several members on here in the past with areas I have knowledge of.

I’m only prepping the bird for sale as alas my motorcycling days are over.

I’d be really grateful if anyone could tell me where to find the wax thermostat, is it fitted to the thermostat housing? I’d love to give it a good wiggle, if only I could find it!!.... story of my lfe
