How so..? The original Lynx's are getting long in the tooth (pardon the pun). The Wildcat replacement (essentially a modernised Lynx) is fair bit more capable.

....or is it the farewell flyby that you're aiming at...?

I do wonder how they justify it. I get that the cost of the fairwell tour is a minor rounding error in the scale of the costs with decommissioning and buying new ones but even if it was "only" £50k that's our money that's in effect being squandered.

The self indulgent farewell fly by.

No problem with equipment being updated if necessary.

What about our nuclear arsenal. Andy. How do your feel about the strillions about to be spent upgrading that. Do you agree with Corbyn that we should scrap the nuclear weapons but keep building the submarines to keep the Clyde workers in a job?

My objection is to wasting public money on what is effectively a jolly rather than buying things that go bang.

I'm pretty certain that if it were Spit's doing it instead of Lynx helicopters then you'd be out there with your camera and no complaints.

Er, no I wouldn't.

What a strange thing to say??

Thinking about this furthervthen yes, I probably would.

I would also go an watch the Lynx fly past if it was anywhere near me.

But that doesn't stop it being a waste of public money.

I wonder how much this cost. Got to be £100k plus, probably considerably more.

My point is that I suspect that you wouldn't complain about the cost if (god forbid) the MOD decided to retire the aircraft of the BBMF from service and they went on a farewell flyby tour.

Those of us who have served in and around the whirlybirds have just as much fondness for them as others might have for certain fixed wing aircraft. e.g. If the Chinook ever gets retired in my lifetime then I'll have no complaints as a tax payer if a few of them were to go on a farewell tour.

The Lynx tour will set us back about £50k - or roughly the bottom end of the pay scale for Squadron Leaders or Majors. Whitelhall's bursting at the seems with middle ranking ruperts with feck all to do but sponge on expenses... in one of them and the flight's paid for. (y)

I take your point...up to a point

Personally I think comparing the BBMF to the Lynx is apples and pears. BBMF is iconic and symbolic of some of the darkest and greatest days in British history.

I am lucky in as much as during the spring and summer we get frequent visits from various 'warbirds' visiting the iconic 'Battle of Britain' coastline, with numerous Spitfires (including the two seater). I assume these are privately owned. Long may it last. Highlight last year was a Mk 9 performing mild aerobatics just off shore for about 40 minutes. Lovely stuff.

Anyway, back to the point - the flypast publicity was in stark contrast to the main news of the day I.e. the number of nurses who have quit due to poor pay and conditions. I know where I would rather see my tax £s spent.
