20mph rant

The last few weeks my commute time into London has increased !
Not because we moved …. It’s because a lot of the roads are becoming 20mph limits
AND there are camera’s !!

My questions about the benefits of having a 20mph limits include…

Traffic lights were synched for 30mph limits …. So now i have stop any almost every set of traffic lights causing more pollution
Im driving in a lower gear so effectively causing more pollution ….
Im at a standstill more … causing more pollution
Lower speed and lower revs mean battery isn’t charging as much as it used to
If I’m at 20mph there will be someone driving closer to the rear of my vehicle
If someone ran into the road while I was driving at 20mph, I could possibly stop…. But at 30mph …. I would be a mile further down the road and miss them altogether !!

I completely understand in areas where it is built up residential / school areas / high pedestrian flow areas ….
Back in the day, we knew cars would be driving 30mph and we were careful around traffic
Accidents are caused by carelessness and idiotic behaviour …..

It all went belly up when the rules requiring the local authority to consult with the Police were removed 10+ years ago and they were allowed to do their own thing.. In some

Back in the day, if a council wanted to raise or lower a speed limit, they had to consult the Police and it was passed to Traffic Management.

A number of checks would be done. First the pink stat forms completed after every injury RTC for that section of road would be checked (assuming there had bee crashes).

Then an 85 percentile check would be conducted over a 3 or 4 day period. This used Truvello cables and 15% would be discounted because that is the average number of drivers who disregard speed limits anyway, and the average of the remaining 85% (hence the term 85 percentile) would be studied to ascertain if there was a speeding issue, and then enforcement would be considered.

There were other issues looked at as well, but once it had been looked at, the Police would either agree, make recommendations or throw out the request.

In some cases, the recommendation might be that the speed limit would benefit from being raised say 10 MPH, (this rarely happened but it was known from time to time) but once everything was looked at and if it was approved, the local authority would rewrite the traffic order and providing it was advertised in the London Gazette (as all traffic law changes are required to be done) at least 6 weeks before it came into force, then job done.

However..........Under deregulation, this all changed and the local authority can now change speed limits and traffic laws in their area with impunity with no requirement to consult anyone.

So all their expensive high earning traffic engineers (many who do not drive) who have to justify their high salaries can chop and change to their hearts content, many of which see a change in speed limits as a cash cow (especially since many cameras went digital and councils retain much of the camera revenue), the only requirement that has remained is the need to advertise the changes in the London Gazette.

Very much doubt it …. As that would be common sense !!!

I did see a study saying the ULEZ zone would stop pollution…. Alas it made no difference !
And the powers that be, wanted everyone to use the bus or tube (Which has seriously poor air quality …. Worse than walking through central Londons ‘gridlocked’ roads in rush hour !!)

In some cases money talks, our field is next to a previously 60mph road, over the road are some very expensive barn conversions occupied by Solicitors, Doctors & a Tate & Lyle heiress, they got together & complained about cars going too fast, speed limit reduced to forty on that stretch of road, they also complained about a mobile phone mast which was then moved to an estate further down the road.
