DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing season will kick off with the most historic race on the circuit ? the 72nd Daytona 200 AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike motorcycle classic on Saturday, March 16.
The 57-lap, 200-mile event will serve as the finale for 2013 Daytona 200 Week on Saturday afternoon, March 16 and test riders with a grueling and demanding race on the twists and turns of Daytona International Speedway?s 3.51-mile road course.
Motorcycle legends that have captured the Daytona 200 include Scott Russell, Miguel Duhamel, Kenny Roberts, Dick Klamforth, Brad Andres, Roger Reiman, Mat Mladin and most recently Ben Bostrom, Josh Herrin, Jason DiSalvo and Joey Pascarella.
In the 2012 edition of the Daytona 200, Pascarella, riding for Project One Yamaha, survived a four-bike scramble to win. Pascarella, who led 41 of the 57 laps, held off DiSalvo, Yamaha?s Cameron Beaubier and Suzuki?s Martin Cardenas to win by a margin of .048 seconds.
In addition to the Daytona 200, the Speedway will host a full complement of GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing classes March 14-16 including the National Guard SuperBike, Motorcycle-Superstore.com Supersport and the Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Series. The AMA Pro Flat Track doubleheader is scheduled for March 14-15.
Daytona 200 Week motorcycle racing will begin on Saturday night, March 9 with the prestigious Daytona Supercross By Honda ? the only AMA Supercross event in Florida in 2013. The tough and challenging course will once again be designed by Supercross legend Ricky Carmichael.
