I've got a wooden handrail next to a set of steps in the garden that require a bit of a repair, one of the 2" x 2" posts has broken.
It would appear from all my Googling that 2" X 2" is no longer available but you can get 47mm x 50mm rough sawn timber or get this 50mm x 50mm planed square edge whos actual dimensions are 44mm x 44mm WTF?

Ah, DIY, excellent.

Go big then plane it down to required size.

Or your local timber yard will do it in exchange for one of your children.

If you have a big enough shed/garage/barn, buy a big table saw & get some sleepers, you can cut to any size you want.

Are you talking 8 x 4 sleepers?
Whatever size you want, when we had the smallholding I got some pirhana pine laits, I cut some sleepers straight down the middle with a circular saw unfortunately the saw burnt out after the fourth one so I had to use a handsaw, on the next four took me ages & I was knackered, it was then that I thought I could do with a large table saw.

No problem getting rough sawn 2x2 (50x50) here from a builders merchant but no hope getting it from any diy store most of that is PAR CLS so undersized as mentioned

CLS is very weather resistant by the way & even better if properly treated, good stuff is really close grained, I'd recommend it for any outside projects

While we are on the subject of timber, don't be fooled by some of the diy shops claims about tantalised timbers half of its bull & a good percentage of it is just dipped rather than properly pressure treated, that will last the rest wont

Hurrah, local (ten miles each way) builders merchant 2 x 2 and 16 foot long £7.04.

@Minkey live way out in the sticks(no pun)so the national diy places are an hour away.

@derek kelly The table saw was an option but then I'd be left with lots of sawdust and we don't keep rabbits or gerbils so it would be a waste.
