Just been out to our favourite pub for a meal with our neighbours, ordered the steak & ale pie which up to now has never been a disappointment however tonight the steak was bland, no trace of ale, & it had celariac in it:facepalm:
We declined the dessert but couple at the next table, he had salted caramel & ginger apple crumble with two scoops of ice cream, she had two scoops of ice cream, all desserts a fiver.

Any pictures Derek??

The club I used to belong to used to make their own pies, lovely.

New steward decided to start buying in frozen pie fillings in individual dishes so the 'chef' could finish them off with a bit of puff pastry stuck on top. Tasteless muck.

I resigned.

Sadly Wednesday is salad day in our house - I will not inflict unnecessary suffering by posting pictures.

I am doing my lamb kofta on Friday, might post that up.

No pictures mate but this pub were famous for their steak & ale pie, sadly I have just eaten my last s & a pie there, maybe go back & try their beef madras.
There is a garden centre that we go to regularly, they have a deli counter & they sell steak & ale pies for £3.75 for a family sized one, really tasty & the pastry is always just right.
I have made my own on a few occasions but they usually cost me about a tenner for the ingredients.

There is an amazing butchers shop I Abergavenny that sells the best looking meat I have ever seen as well as their own made deli stuff. I had a lamb and mint pasty, absolute heaven.

That's the one thing I REALLY miss about moving back over here. I used to get my meat from a deli in Singapore that was out of this world. Mostly Australian beef and lamb but some American stuff, too. There was even the choice of grass or grain fed. Just as a couple of examples, I used to buy a kilo of lamb tenderloin for about $55 ('bout £30) and a whole beef tenderloin of about 2.5kg would be around $130 (£70 ish). Absolute top drawer quality.

Years ago we used to go to a local pub up the road near Petersfield, which served up the best steak and ale pie I've ever had. The landlord and lady then moved to a pub with the same brewery, but miles down the road in the New Forest.
We got down there a few times and the steak and ale pies were just as good.
A couple of years later they moved to a different brewery but still within the New Forest, all be it further away. They were still serving the same excellent pies so it was well worth the odd trip out to the New Forest.
Fast forward a couple of years and they moved back to a pub down on Hayling Island. Different brewery again, same excellent pies.
Sadly they've now moved on and the pies at that pub are now not up to scratch.

Decent steak and ale pies are becoming a bit of a lost art, it seems. :(

Sounds like they should have concentrated on selling pies rather than the day in day out 24/7 grind of running a pub!!

Petersfield? I remember the rising sun pub there from when I was at HMS Mercury, proper homely pub as I recall, I believe it is now a housing estate.

Dunno about Petersfield but there's still a Rising Sun at Clanfield. That's just a couple of miles down the road from where HMS Mercury was.
