Cos it's in the dictionary between Shit and Syphilis!! However snotty beak dependant, I'm going for a short 1 day stay in the local hospital, only to have the other Rotator Cuff on my left shoulder fixed,"injury at work" having had the one on the right, done a couple of years ago, I could do without it, due to no company sick pay, and Grimbo arriving, the clowns I work for won't let me back until it's 100% healed, though it should be sorted to use "light work only" between 4 and 6 weeks, so rather than have "someone" already working, come with me for an hour a night "to open and shut the curtains once, as any other times, I can get help from workmates with no problem or cost to the firm, will they let me?? not a fekkin chance, they wonder why costs are going up, seems bloody obvious to me, so just because they are being twats, "won't give me a copy of the accident report" being obstructive and negative all the time, I finally decided to let my union sort it out for me, I'm an HGV driver and the trucks I drive are fully automatic POS, so left hand/arm are basically redundant apart from the indicators and tuning the bloody radio!! Anyway moan and bitch over, :nusenuse: I'm sure "someone" will take another view of the situation, so flame away bitch!! :picknose:16939686_10208724833906461_4752069172672264742_n.jpg

Come on you Hatters
I'm pretty much in the same boat. Been a bad year for me, so was looking forward to the new year. I lost two weeks in Feb renewng my gas qualifications. Two weeks living in the MH on a site near Plymouth riding into college each day, fortunately I'd saved the course fees plus a bit to spare. Then in April I had a Carpel Tunnel op on my right hand, that was 6 weeks off. Two weeks ago I twisted my knee while servicng a boiler on a cramped landing. Not been able to walk since, and its not improving much. All work cancelled. Although i'm going to try and do a couple of Landlord certificates this week, cos if I don't I'll lose them forever going on previous experience.

Why no sick pay??
Not all companies pay sick pay AB. We pay all our employees full wage even if they have been off for a couple of months. They never take the piss and they appreciate it, so if you need them to put in the extra effort they do it without asking. I have always said treat people how you would expect to be treated and you won't go far wrong.

Wow. I assumed sick pay was statutory for a full employment contract.

I am genuinely surprised.

This is why we say "you don't live in the real world" Andrew, when I worked at Coke I got full pay when off sick, as they were a "proper" company, now I work for a company I wouldn't wipe my arse with, and they have NO idea why the staff hate them even after it's been written down and posted/given to them, I actually wasn't going to make an injury claim, but they have fucked me about for no reason I got pissed off with the attitude so let my union know, they asked me WTF I was doing, even considering not claiming!! and having to go to work for three days "that I'm owed" instead of just saying take them before your off, having SSP over Grimbo just put the top hat on it!!

If you hate your job that much, then why not change employer?
It seems there is a shortage of skilled lorry drivers, so surely there are other jobs out there where you would feel more valued as an employee? I realise it takes effort to find a new job, but must be worth a look?
A bit harsh on AB me thinks - 'not in real world'

Trust me, my workmates and I are ONLY there for the convenience, no weekends and hours that suit us, even at Coke the job was brill, but the management were wankers, similar with this place. And Andrew is well aware of my often "harsh" humour, and is big enough and ugly to take it, cos DEEEEP down he knows it's banter, rude banter but banter nevertheless :picknose:

Sounds like you want it all ways?

That, unfortunately, doesn't happen in the real world.

Or even in my, apparently, unreal world.

Cracks me up, no weekends, no odd hours, so you could get a better job, but you might have to work a tad harder. Whatever happened to getting out what you put in? I appreciate it might be a lifestyle choice and convenient, but then you can't have it all ways. My brother in law drives a big aggregate lorry and he's always banging on about his boss because 'it's ok for him in his flash Bentley' what he forgets to mention is his boss is first in, last to leave and works most weekends... Ummm

Try self employed. Not even Statutory Sick Pay. I was out of work for almost 3 months after the heart attack in the summer with nothing coming in.

Thats my problem too. My wife couldn't believe I can't get ssp either. Good job she's got a good job, although she's not happy she's probably going to have to help balance the books for a few weeks!!
I'm possibly having a pretty major op next year too, ten weeks recovery!! Seriously looking like I'll have to turn it down, or at least delay it.

You can buy income protection insurance, which might not be a bad idea if you're self employed. I know it's another flippin insurance premium, but might be worth exploring for peace of mind... :)

. Then in April I had a Carpel Tunnel op on my right hand, that was 6 weeks off.

Been waiting on that op myself for almost 3 years & now they have decided they might try an injection first, in the meantime the left hand is going the same way

What surprised me is you mention 6 weeks off  I'm not worried as I has to be done & am not working because of it & other stuff anyway but 6 weeks, is it really that bad ?

Horrendously expensive, i'd have paid thousands in over the last 35 years for very little return. Cant remember the exact figures when i looked into it when i first went SE in 1983, but it was something like £19 per month per £100 a month cover. Illness and accident are two seperate policys, and you couldn't claim for at least the first week of any illness. And the list of exclusions was huge, leaving little you'd actually get paid out for. Its the same with tool insurance, with the best exclusion being that they're not insured at night FFS.......
The only answer really is to create a savings pot that you never touch so you've got money to fall back on when the time comes!!

Being in a manual trade, and it being my dominant hand, yes it was at least six weeks. I had my left done about 3 years earlier and tried to work after 4-5weeks and it just wasn't strong enough. It does depend on your work though. My niece has had both done and was working after 3-4 weeks, but she was only at Costa in those days.

After my first op the surgeon was happy to do the right, but I delayed it due to the overall cost to me. So the end of last year I decided to get it done, as it was seriously causing problems riding as my hand would quickly go numb and take a good hour or two to settle down. It was getting dangerous. They wouldn't let me just contact the surgeon, I had to go through the system. This now consists of an outsourced consultancy, who wouldn't accept the surgeons diagnosis from 3 years earlier. Instead they made me have an electrical conductivity test......the result being......I had carpel tunnel syndrome. No shit shirlock. How the feck does that save the nhs money??

Thanks for that mate, although I'm not working presently I was a builder, & know I couldn't use grips properly for a good while when I was on the plumbing after when I broke my hand so understand what you mean

Sounds like I will be going stir crazy for a few weeks not being able to get stuff done around this place but it is what it is I suppose
